1 Introduction1.1 About this manualThe scope of this ‘Getting started guide’ is to help you install and runGFI LANguard on your network with minimum effort. It: Guides you through the respective installation procedure, Walks you through the key steps needed to get the productrunning on default settings.Manual structureThis manual is designed to guide you through the sequence of stepsneeded to: Identify product prerequisites applicable to your network Prepare your environment for product installation Install/Upgrade GFI LANguard Configure, test, and run the productAdministration and customizationDetailed administration and customization guidelines are provided in aseparate manual called ‘GFI LANguard administration andcustomization manual’ that is installed with the product or separatelydownloadable from the GFI website. 2 Installing GFI LANguard 92.1 IntroductionGFI LANguard 9 can be installed on any computer on your networkthat has network access to the scan targets. Secure Shell (SSH) – Required for UNIX based scan targets.Commonly included as part of all major Unix/Linux distributions. SAMBA (SMB) server – Required for UNIX-based scanningtargets. Commonly included as part of all major Unix/Linuxdistributions. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) – Required to scanWindows-based scan targets. Included in all Windows 2000 ornewer operating systems.2.2.2 System requirements: HardwareHardware requirements depend on network size. Refer to Table 1below for the minimum specifications according to your network size.1 to 10 scantargets10 to 500scan targets500 to 1500scan targetsProcessor1 GHz2 GHz2 X 3 GHzQuad CorePhysical Storage500 MB2 GB10 GBMemory512 MB2 GB4 GBNetworkbandwidth usage256 KBps256 KBps to256 KBps to550 KBps550 KBpsTable 1 - GFI LANguard hardware requirements2.3 Installing GFI LANguard2.3.1 Upgrade from earlier versionsIf you are currently using a previous version of GFI LANguard(versions 7 or 8), you can upgrade your current installation while at thesame time retain all your existing custom scan profiles, scheduledscan details, mail server settings and the scan results database.Important notesUpgrades cannot be undone i.e. you cannot downgrade to an earlierversion once you have installed the latest version.On upgrading an existing installation, licensing reverts to trial versionand a new fully purchased license key for the GFI LANguard 9 isrequired. For more information on new license keys, refer to:http://customers.gfi.comYou cannot change the installation path during GFI LANguardupgrades.Upgrade procedure1. Launch GFI LANguard installation (LANguard9.exe) on themachine where your earlier version of GFI LANguard is installed. Before starting installation, close any running Windows applications.Installation procedure1. Logon the machine where GFI LANguard will be installed usingadministrator credentials.2. Double click LANguard9.exe (x32 or x64 install). Click Next tocontinue setup.3. Read licensing agreement. Key in the administrator credentials and password to be used by theservice under which scheduled operations will operate. Click Next tocontinue setup.NOTE: If the credentials submitted are not valid, a message will bedisplayed giving the user the ability to skip or re-submit theverification.6. Click Finish to finalize installation.2.3.3 Post install actionsModify default settingsNotwithstanding the fact that GFI LANguard is specifically designed tobe usable right after installing, the first thing to do after installation is toreview the default settings and amend them according to your needsand requirements.1. From the current configuration settings dialog displayed, select anyof the following options to modify default settings.Database backendBy default, GFI LANguard uses a Microsoft Access based databaseback end. It is highly recommended that you change the backenddatabase to a Microsoft SQL/MSDE/SQL Express database backendas soon as you install GFI LANguard. This enables you to availyourself of the better performance and scalability that these databasesystems offer. To change your database:1. MS Access and provide the folder where the database is locatedto use an MS Access database.3. Click Apply and OK to save settings.Alerting optionsAlerting options enable you to receive mail notifications after eachscheduled scan informing you of the success/failure of such scan.Configure alerting to ensure you keep up to date with GFI LANguardautomated scanning.1. Click Verify Settings to confirmthe validity of the settings keyed in.3. Click OK to save settings.GFI LANguard and Microsoft updatesAfter having configured the GFI LANguard database backend and theAlerting options, next configure the GFI LANguard and Microsoftupdates schedule. By default LANguard is configured to downloadupdates everyday at 3:00pm. To customize GFI LANguard updatesone can;1. Enable/Disable Updates by check /un-check the Enable scheduledupdate.2.Customize the update schedule by modifying the Resource pattern.3.Download updates from GFI Web site or enter an alternativelocation.Test your installationOnce GFI LANguard is installed, start using GFI LANguard on yourinstallation and remediate any vulnerability on your network.
