TSSN 1069-2010December 2000International Newsletter for Shot Peening-Surface Finishing IndustryColorado Springs, Colorado was the siteof our 10th annual shot peening and blast cleaning workshop and trade show. We welcomed 167attendees from 16 countries. Thirteen industryleaders in shot peening and blast cleaning hadbooths at the trade show.Jack Champaigne, president ofElectronics Inc., organized the first shot peeningworkshop in 1990 as a way to improve qualitycontrol in shot peening. "Every year the workshop attendees are more qualified and ask betterquestions in the classes," says Jack. "I see shotpeening gaining credibility as a vital procedurein many industries," he added.Over the three-day workshop, participantscould choose from over 50 classes in four basiccategories including Shot Peening, BlastCleaning, Turbine1 Wheel Machinesand Air Blast Machines.Volume 14, Issue 4Almen gage practice and the Level I, II, and111 shot peening exams were held on the last day ofthe workshop. Fifty-four students took the Level Iexam, four took Level II and two took Level 111.We've included a list of attendees andinstructors in this newsletter plus lots of photos.More photos are at our web site: wwwshotpeener.corn. The photos give the big picture-the workshop is a great opportunity to learn and socializewith people from around the world that share yourinterest in shot peening and blast cleaning.Thank you to everyone who joined us thisyear; your participation enriched the experience forus all! If you haven't been to a workshop; makeplans to join us in 2001. Information on Workshop2001 will be at the web site soon. 0--- - -- -- - --/,'------- - - - -

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Shot Peening Described Shot peening is a cold working process in which the surface of a part is bombarded with small spherical media called shot. Each piece of shot striking the material acts as a tiny peening hammer, imparting to the surface a small indentation or dimple.

shot peening. It is seen that the area fraction and thickness of the nanocrystalline layer increased with peening time. In the Fig. 3 SEM micrographs of Fe-0.05C-1.29Mn high tensile strength steel after shot peened for 10s. (a) as shot peened and (b) annealed at 873K for 3.6ks after shot peening.

Table 2 gives the parameters used for shot peening the dog bone samples. Shot peening was done using a Westward blast cabinet equipment with a pressure regulator. To produce consistent results, the jig in Fig. 9 was used to secure the sample. Fig. 8 Pseduo-Almen strip deflection after shot peening. ABS 1.75 mm filament X Y Z

using fine shot peening. These rollers are herein denoted as SP rollers. The sur-face roughness was varied by approximately 0.2 to 2.1 using shot peening. The test roller without shot peening was also conducted for comparison. These roll-ers are herein denotedas NP rollers. The surface roughness of the non-peened

The net result of shot peening is often a noticeable improvement in fatigue properties (Ref. 5). Shot peening under a prestress can produce an even higher level of compressive stresses (Ref. 3). Laser-shock peening (LSP) was first used by Battelle Columbus Laboratories in 1974 (Ref. 6). In this process, the

Cast steel shot, commonly used for shot peening, is available in different degrees of hardness and the selection of shot hardness depends on the hardness of the material being peened. The regular hardness shot, usually 47-48 Kc, is suitable for peening mate- rials with a hardness below 50 Rc. However, when
