Chapter 1. IntroductionThis Installation Guide contains instructions for setting up your IBM System x3650Type 7979 server and basic instructions for installing some optional devices. Moredetailed instructions for installing optional devices are in the User’s Guide on theIBM System x Documentation CD, which comes with the server. This documentcontains information about:v Setting up and cabling the serverv Starting and configuring the serverv Installing some optional devicesv Solving problemsAttention: The information in this document regarding installing and removingpower supplies and connecting and disconnecting power refers to ac powersupplies only. If the server contains dc power supplies, see the documentation thatcomes with the dc power supplies. In a dc power environment, only trained servicepersonnel other than IBM service technicians are authorized to connect ordisconnect power to the dc power supply and to install and remove a dc powersupply. The server has two model styles, which are based on the size and number of harddisk drive bays:v The 3.5-inch models have six 3.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drive bays. Install only3.5-inch drives in these models. If you intend to install a tape drive, the tapedrive will occupy two of the six 3.5-inch drive bays.v The 2.5-inch models have eight 2.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drive bays and one3.5-inch tape drive bay. Install only 2.5-inch hard disk drives and an optional3.5-inch tape drive in these models.Throughout this documentation, the terms 2.5-inch models and 3.5-inch models areused to distinguish between the server styles. If firmware and documentation updates are available, you can download them fromthe IBM Web site. The server might have features that are not described in thedocumentation that comes with the server, and the documentation might be updatedoccasionally to include information about those features, or technical updates mightbe available to provide additional information that is not included in the serverdocumentation. To check for updates, complete the following steps:Note: Changes are made periodically to the IBM Web site. Procedures for locatingfirmware and documentation might vary slightly from what is described in thisdocument. Copyright IBM Corp. 20071

Notices and statements in this documentThe caution and danger statements that appear in this document are also in themultilingual Safety Information document, which is on the IBM System xDocumentation CD. Each statement is numbered for reference to the correspondingstatement in the Safety Information document. The following notices and statements are used in this document:v Note: These notices provide important tips, guidance, or advice.v Important: These notices provide information or advice that might help you avoidinconvenient or problem situations.v Attention: These notices indicate potential damage to programs, devices, ordata. An attention notice is placed just before the instruction or situation in whichdamage could occur.v Caution: These statements indicate situations that can be potentially hazardousto you. A caution statement is placed just before the description of a potentiallyhazardous procedure step or situation.v Danger: These statements indicate situations that can be potentially lethal orextremely hazardous to you. A danger statement is placed just before thedescription of a potentially lethal or extremely hazardous procedure step orsituation.Features and specificationsThe following information is a summary of the features and specifications of theserver. Depending on the server model, some features might not be available, orsome specifications might not apply.Racks are marked in vertical increments of 4.45 cm (1.75 inches). Each incrementis referred to as a unit, or “U.” A 1-U-high device is 1.75 inches tall.Notes:1. Power consumption and heat output vary depending on the number and type ofoptional features that are installed and the power-management optional featuresthat are in use.2. The sound levels were measured in controlled acoustical environmentsaccording to the procedures specified by the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI) S12.10 and ISO 7779 and are reported in accordance with ISO9296. Actual sound-pressure levels in a given location might exceed theaverage values stated because of room reflections and other nearby noisesources. The declared sound-power levels indicate an upper limit, below whicha large number of computers will operate.4IBM System x3650 Type 7979: Installation Guide
