Shaftliner Type XSHAFTLINERGlasRoc Shaftliner is a paperless mold and moistureresistant gypsum board combining reinforcing glass matsand a specially formulated fire and moisture resistive, noncombustible core.GlasRoc Shaftliner offers:GlasRoc Shaftwall Systems1 & 2 Hour FireResistance Ratings L ong term protection (12 months) to weather exposure. The walls of elevator shafts and stairwells are a vital lifeSHAFTLINERsafety link in multi-story buildings. These walls are the A superior water resistant surface that does not inhibitwater vapor permeance. E xcellent fire resistance properties, and numerous firerated designs. A chieves score of 10 for mold resistance perASTM D3273 the best possible scores for this test.main line of defense against fire entering the cavitiesbehind them and spreading rapidly from floor to floor.Gypsum shaftwall systems have replaced traditionalmasonry for interior vertical enclosures includingmechanical enclosures, stairwells, elevatorenclosures, and other mechanical chases. Some inherentadvantages of paperless gypsum shaftwall systems are:lightweight construction, thinner walls, ease and speed ofSpecially formulatedwater resistant coreinstallation and clean up, cost-effective construction.Shaftwall Systems provide one or two hour fireresistance ratings in non-loadbearing configurations andmoisture and mold resistance during construction.Reinforcing glass mats

The systems are designed to withstand the intermittentsurges of air pressure caused by fast moving elevatorcabs. These systems utilize either an I-Stud, C-H Stud ora C-T Stud and J-Track to support layers of 1" (25.4 mm)1/2" [12.7mm] CertainTeed Type C or5/8" [15.9mm] CertainTeed or M2Tech Type X Gypsum BoardGlasRoc Shaftliner Type X and either 1/2" (12.7 mm)CertainTeed Type C or 5/8" (15.9 mm) CertainTeed orM2Tech Type X gypsum boards.EITHER I-STUD, C-H STUD OR C-T STUDS MAY BEUSED IN CONJUNCTION WITH GlasRoc shaftwallsystems. All of the components are noncombustible.Shaftwalls can be erected from oneside, eliminating the need to buildextensive scaffolding.GlasRoc Shaftwall assemblies save money in severalJ-Track1" [25.4mm]GlasRoc Shaftliner Type Xways. With less weight per square area than other shaftenclosures, structural framing requirements are reduced;I, C-H or C-T Studas is the need for heavily reinforced footings. The 2'(610 mm) wide GlasRoc Shaftliner slides quickly into theI-Stud, C-H Stud or C-T Stud and automatically provides1/2" [12.7mm] CertainTeed Type C or5/8" [15.9mm] CertainTeed or M2Tech Type X Gypsum Board24" (610 mm) o.c. spacing. Shaftwalls can be erectedfrom one side, eliminating the need to build extensivescaffolding. No finishing is required on the shaftJ-Trackside of the partition.2-Hour Vertical Shaftwall System1. All construction shall comply with local building codes.2. Only those components specified shall be used whenconstructing any fire or sound rated system. Substitutionsmay adversely affect performance capabilities.3. Unless otherwise specified in the system design, face layer joints of 1/2"(12.7 mm) CertainTeed Type C, 5/8" (15.9 mm) CertainTeed or M2Tech Type X gypsum boards shall be taped and finished with joint compoundas described in “Surface Preparation” section.Code Report ReferencesUL ER3660-02 (IBC and NBCC Compliance)Fire Resistance Rated DesignsUL/cUL U417, U428, U429, U469, U529, V433, V470,W409, W437, W453ULC W446UL ER3660-02Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design ManualGA-600 (GA WP 7051, WP 7084, WP 7254, WP 7255)For further technical information regarding soundcontrol and fire resistance for Shaftwall Systems contactMarketing Technical Services at 1-800-446-5284.GlasRoc Shaftliner Type X Gypsum Boards for Gypsum Shaftwall Systems Call Toll Free 1-800-446-5284 www.certainteed.com3

On the logo side, position a straight edgealong the line of cut.2. Score sheets with a knife or othersuitable tool.3. With a quick, firm motion, snap back awayfrom the face.4. The back can either be cut with a knifeor separated by snapping the piece in theopposite direction.5. Smooth all cut ends and edges to ensuretight joints. To make cutouts, score around the perimeteron the face and back and tap out the wastepiece from the face side. Cutouts can also bemade with a drywall saw.GlasRoc gypsum boards can also be cutwith a saw. For information on avoiding dustinhalation, refer to the Safety Data Sheetavailable on our website, www.certainteed.com. Safety glasses should always be wornwhen using power tools.41. Lay out per construction drawings.2. Install J-Track along the floor and ceilingand vertically at columns or abuttingpartitions, positioning the long legs closestto the shaft. Secure each piece withthe appropriate power driven fastenersspaced a maximum 24" (600 mm).3. Pre plan stud layout 24" (610 mm) o.c.maximum so the terminal stud on eitherend will fall a minimum of 8" (200 mm)from the opening.4. Install GlasRoc Shaftliner gypsum boardsvertically. Cut boards a maximum of 1"(25 mm) less than floor to ceiling height. The leading edge of the first board mustbe attached to the long leg of the verticalJ-Track with 1-5/8" (41 mm) Type S screwsspaced 12" (305 mm) o.c. or by tabs in theJ-Track. Secure the top and bottom edgesusing the same fasteners and spacing orusing the tabs.5. Friction fit an I, C-H or C-T Stud into thetop and bottoms tracks and slide it snuglyagainst the GlasRoc Shaftliner gypsumboards. Make sure the edge of the board isin full contact with the center web of thestud and covered by all of the tabs.6. E rect adjacent GlasRoc Shaftliner gypsumboards by inserting in the top and bottomJ-Track and between the tabs and flangeon the opposite side of the I, C-H orC-T Studs to complete framing. Checkperiodically to ensure they are plumb.Screws are not required for the top andbottom J-Tracks.7. For doors, ducts or other openings installJ-Track as perimeter framing.8. For walls exceeding 12' (3660 mm) inheight, GlasRoc Shaftliner gypsum boardsmay be butted to span the floor-ceilingheight. The shorter panel should be at least24" (600 mm) long or of sufficient lengthto engage at least two I, C-H or C-T Studtabs on each panel edge. End joints shouldfall alternately in the upper and lower 1/3height of the partition. Subsequent buttjoints between adjoining panels should bespaced no closer than 24" (600 mm) inelevation. Joints may be butted together oruse a I, C-H or C-T Stud placed horizontallybetween boards to secure each joint.9. As an option, if required in building codejurisdictions, butt joints in GlasRoc Shaftliner gypsum boards may be backblocked in the cavity by screw attachinga 12" x 24" (300 mm x 600 mm) pieceof 5/8" (15.9 mm) CertainTeed orM2Tech Type X or 1" (25.4 mm) GlasRoc
