Amphenol Tri-StartSeries III - the highest performanceMIL - DTL - 38999* connectorAmphenol Tri-Start MIL-DTL -38999 Series III Connectorsoffer the highest performance capabilities for both generalduty and severe environment applications. Meeting orexceeding MIL-DTL-38999 Series III requirements, theTri-Start connector with standard metal shells (aluminiumor stainless steel with several finish options) offers thesefeatures:Coupling NetQuick Coupling ThreadRatchetEMI Shielding - Solid metal to metal coupling, groundingfingers, electroless nickel plating and thicker wall sectionsprovide superior EMI shielding capability of 65dBminimum at 10 GHzContact Protection - Recessed pins in this 100% scoopproof connector minimize potential contact damageMoisture Resistance - Improved interfacial seal designhelps prevent electrolytic erosion of contactsAnti- Decoupling DeviceCorrosion Resistance - Shells of stainless steel orcadmium over nickel plating withstand a 500 hour saltspray exposurePlug ShellSpring Fingers (EMI)MIL- Qualified to MIL-DTL-38999, Rev. K, theAmphenol Composite Tri-Start Connectoroffers a lightweight, corrosion resistantconnector with the same high performancefeatures as its metal counterpart. TheComposite Tri-Start Connector also includesthe following features:Vibration /Shock - Operates under severe hightemperature vibration, through 2000CFirewall Capability - Available in a stainless steel shell, class RK, RSLockwiring Eliminated - Unique, self - locking, quickcoupling connector eliminates lockwiringLightweight - 17% - 70% weight savings(17-40% weight savings vs. aluminum)(60-70% weight savings vs. stainless steel)See Composite weight comparison chart, pg. 23Quick Coupling - Completely mates and self-locks in a3600 turn of the coupling nutInventory Support Commonality- Uses standard MILDTL-38999 contacts, application tools and insertarrangementsCorrosion Resistance - Available in standardMIL-DTL-38999 olive drab cadmium (1750C) andelectroless nickel plating (2000C), bothwithstanding 2000 hours of salt spray exposure. The base material is able to withstand anindefinite exposure to salt sprayElectrostatic Discharge Protection (ESD) - Protectionfor sensitive circuitry without diodes, varistors, etc., withthe use of the Faraday Cage principal which shunts highvoltage, high current discharge eventsDurability - 1500 couplings minimum (inreference to connector couplings, not contacts)Extended Life Contact - MIL - approved platingprocess which provides 1500 couplings minimum2

Amphenol Tri-StartThe ultimate subminiature cylindricalDesigned for performanceNumerous advantages in performance capability aredesigned into the Amphenol Tri-Start Connector. A positivemetal to metal coupling design, grounding fingers andelectroless nickel plating provide superior EMI shieldingcapability of 65 dB minimum at 10 GHz.Acme threads provide coupling durability. Thicker wallsections and a greater coupling surface area improvestrength and shock resistance. Blunting of the thread onboth the coupling nut and receptacle eliminates crosscoupling. The connector quickly mates and self locks in a3600 turn of the coupling nut.Wall Mount ReceptacleElongated mounting holes permit the Tri-Start Connector tointermount with various existing MIL-spec box or wall mountreceptacles, giving it a design replacement advantage.Shells of stainless steel, or cadmium over nickel platingprevent severe corrosion. Resistance is tested throughexposure to a 500 hour salt spray. Composite versionsprovide protection from salt spray exposure for 2000 hours.Other finish options are available.Recessed pins minimize potential contact damage in this100% scoop-proof connector. In a blind mating application, mating shells cannot “scoop” the pins and cause a shortingor bending of contacts. The design of the Amphenol Tri-Start interfacial seal meetsthe MIL-DTL-38999 Series III requirements for electrolyticerosion resistance.Straight PlugA rigid dielectric insert with excellent electricalcharacteristics provides durable protection to the contacts. The socket contacts are probe proof and all contacts arerear removable.Available in sizes 10 power, 12, 16, 20 and 22D contactsare plated in the standard 50 micro inches minimum gold, with 100 micro inches as an option. Fiber optics, extendedlife and shielded coaxial contacts are also available in awide selection of standard MIL-DTL-38999 insert patterns.Optional FeaturesJam Nut ReceptacleOptions include hermetic seals, nickel plated stainless steelshells and a fail-safe lanyard release design, providing aquick breakaway connector with Tri-Start dependability.Circuit protection with filter contacts or surge arrestingdevices are also available. Lightweight, composite shellswith conductive plating are available. Ground planeconnectors for use with coaxial and triaxial contacts canalso be specified.3
