4To end the scan at any time, press the ,key. , orVOICE ACTIVATED CONTROL (VOX)Using the VOX feature, you can operate the transceiverhands-free. For best operating conditions, we recommendyou use an optional headset with both an ear piece and amicrophone on a boom that rests in front of your mouth. With VOX activated, your voice level will determine when thetransceiver transmits. Because of this, you must take carethat the ambient noise around you is not so loud that it causesthe transceiver to transmit. Due to the automatic switchingbetween transmission and reception, we recommend you setthe VOX gain such that it will not activate transmission whenin an area with excessive ambient noise. Before VOX will operate, you must set a VOX Gain Level:1Enter the Menu Settings (page 12) andpress the or key until you reach the“VOX” display.2key to set the VOX GainPress theLevel ( ) from 1 to 3, where 3 is the mostsensitive setting, or OFF ( ).3Press the PTT switch or turn thetransceiver power OFF to confirm yoursetting. If you have turned the VOX function ONby selecting a VOX Gain Level other thanOFF ( ), the VOX icon appears on thedisplay.16

When operating VOX, if you find that the transceiver returnsto receive mode too quickly after you stop speaking, the endof your message may not be transmitted. To avoid this, selectan appropriate delay time to allow your entire message to betransmitted. However, do not make the delay overly long.1Enter the Menu Settings (page 12) andpress the or key until you reach the” display.“VOX This menu is only available if the VOXGain Level has been set to any valueother than OFF ( ).2Press thekey to set the VOX DelayTime ( ) from 0.5 to 3.0 seconds.3Press the PTT switch or turn thetransceiver power OFF to confirm yoursetting. When you have activated the VOX function and selected anappropriate Gain Level and Delay Time, you can then operatethe transceiver hands-free. SQUELCHWhen no signals are present, the squelch on the transceiverautomatically mutes the speaker so you will not hearbackground noise. You can however, deactivate the squelch. This feature is useful for a variety of reasons: It allows you to confirm the channel activity so that youdon’t make a call while another party is using the samechannel. It allows you to adjust the volume level without having towait for a call. When receiving a call that is intermittent due to a weaksignal, disabling the squelch will allow you to listen to thecall without it continuously cutting out.1Enter the Menu Settings (page 12) andpress the or key until you reach the“ ” (Squelch) display.2Press thekey to turn the squelchfunction ON ( ) or OFF ( ).3Press the PTT switch to confirm yoursetting. If you have turned the squelch functionOFF, the busy icon appears on thedisplay.Note: Turning the transceiver power OFF will reset the squelch to itsdefault setting. When the transceiver is turned back ON, squelch isalso automatically turned ON.19

OPERATING FEATURESKEY LOCKYou can lock the , , andkeys to prevent accidentallychanging the channel and channel settings. Additionally, while the transceiver is locked, you cannot enter the MenuSettings (page 12).key for 1 second toPress and hold thelock or unlock the transceiver keys. Theicon appears on the display when thetransceiver keys are locked. No icon appearswhen they are unlocked. While the key lock function is active, you canstill perform the following functions: Power ON/OFF Volume adjustment Receive/ transmit Monitor Calling Alert Tones Full resetLAMPThe lamp is used to illuminate the Liquid Crystal Display. Each time a key is pressed (other than the PTT switch or theVOL control), the lamp turns ON and remains on for5 seconds. If you press a key while the lamp is already on,the lamp timer will reset the 5 second countdown.Note: There is no key to turn the lamp OFF. It will turn OFFautomatically.20

TRANSMIT POWER SAVERThe purpose of the Transmit Power Saver is to prevent youfrom transmitting continuously for a long time. This function isuseful, for example, when you accidentally keep the PTTswitch pressed. If you continuously transmit for 3 minutes, the transceiver willstop transmitting and a tone will sound. To stop the tone, release the PTT switch. You can press the PTT switch againto resume transmitting. The 3 minute timer cannot beadjusted. This transceiver is also equipped with a visualwarning, 30 seconds before the TransmitPower Saver time expires, and a pre-alerttone which sounds 10 seconds before thetime expires. This will allow you to finish yourmessage before the transceiver automaticallystops transmitting. Thirty seconds before thetime expires, the number 30 will appear andblink on the display in place of your GroupMode number. Ten seconds before the timeexpires, a tone will sound.BATTERY SAVERThis transceiver has been designed to give you the most outof your battery power. The battery saver decreases theamount of power used when a signal is not being receivedand no operations are being performed. While using the transceiver, the battery saver willautomatically switch ON after 5 seconds have elapsed with nooperations or received calls. Operating the transceiver orreceiving a call will switch the feature OFF until 5 seconds ofnon-operation occurs again.21

LOUDNESSThis transceiver has a built in booster amplifier. You cancontrol the volume level by rotating the VOL control. However, if you are in an environment with excessive ambientnoise, you may find that it is difficult to hear the audio from thetransceiver, even with the volume increased to its maximumvalue. In such a case, you can switch the internal boosteramplifier ON to further increase the volume level.1Momentarily press thethe Loudness setting.2Press the or key to turn the boosteramplifier ON ( ) or OFF ( ).3Press the switch or theconfirm your setting.switch to enterkey to If you have turned the booster amplifierfunction ON, the LOUD icon appears onthe display.Note: The Loudness function will not operate if you are using anoptional speaker-microphone.
