COMEONOUTDURING THE SUMMER MONTHS,SUMMIT COUNTY HOME DESIGN ISALL ABOUT MAKING THE MOST OFTHE OUTDOORS.By Amanda M. FaisonPhotos courtesy of pinnaclebreckenridge.comIn the Colorado mountains, there’s an old adage: You come for the winter but you stay for thesummer. And it’s true, there are few things moregloriousthanourmountainsonabluebirddayinJuly or August. So it should come as no viting the comforts of home outside.Long winters and heavy snowfall make elabo-rate outdoor kitchens impractical, but—in thesummer—multilevel decks and patios fit withprivate spaces, stand-alone grills, fire pits, spa-worthy hot tubs and dining areas take the ings—including rentals—thattakethegloryofsummermountain living to the next level.36B R E C K E N R I D G E M A G A Z I N E / S U M M E R 2 0 17BALDY MOUNTAIN,BRECKENRIDGENestled among stands of lodge pole pine on BaldyMountain, this refined mountain lodge was originally built in 2002 as a bed and breakfast and hosted many a wedding. That was before the town ofBreckenridge began cracking down on large gatherings in quiet neighborhoods. But the home’s generous amenities—including a professional-grade catering kitchen that connects tothe south-facing patio—still exist. When Todd and Julie Pahl bought the property in 2015, theymade the outdoor space even more inviting by turning an eightfoot planter below the hot tub into a gas fire pit. That element hasbecome the space’s focal point, while the dining area and a cascading waterfall and pond make up the background. The patio wrapsaround the house to a tiered terrace (an obvious holdover from thewedding era) that provides a sweeping look at Breckenridge SkiResort and the Tenmile Range. “That view is the reason we boughtthe house,” Julie says. And that west-facing patio is where the couple sits in the alpenglow and watches the sun drop below the peaks.

A WALKTHROUGHHISTORYCOLUMBIA LODE,BRECKENRIDGEThe vision behind this Columbia Lodehome was to bring Breckenridge’s miningroots to life. Pinnacle Mountain Homescalled on materials such as exposed iodized steel, rough-hewn stone, and reclaimed wood, as well as rooms named after famousColorado mines and intentionally tight corridors, torecall the Gold Rush era. And when looking at howto incorporate the mining theme outside, “We weredefinitely thinking of how the exterior relates to theinterior,” says designer Christina Romano of PinnacleDesign Studios. “You are experiencing the interior ofthe house while you’re outside.”A fire pit fabricated out of an old mining cart fromLeadville anchors the front patio, as do sculpturalbeams that mimic the entrance of a mine. For entertaining, a saloon-style bar (complete with swingingdoors) opens to the outside via an indoor-outdoor barand two copper bar stools. Swivel around and you’reoverlooking the town of Breckenridge for an idealblend of old and new.40B R E C K E N R I D G E M A G A Z I N E / S U M M E R 2 0 17

DECKEDOUTCONSIDERING A DECK ORPATIO REMODEL? HERE’SWHAT YOU NEED TOKNOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUROUTDOOR SPACE. Install accordion or bifold doorswith floor-to-ceiling glass thatopen all the way to expand theliving space. Run the same flooring, such aslarge limestone tiles, from theinside to the outside so there’s“zero threshold of where thehouse ends and the deck begins,” says Christina Romano ofPinnacle Design Studios.COLUMBIA LODE STATS Five bedrooms plus bunk room, sixand a half bathrooms, sleeps 21 5,983 square feet Custom mine cart fire pit Indoor-outdoor bar withpass-through window Multiple decks with views of theTenmile Range Add amenities such as built-ingas heaters and towel warmers, along with outdoor storagefor cozy blankets, to take thechill off. Purchase portable propane heaters. These are an easy and relatively affordable way to lengthenpatio season. Bonus: You canmove them around. “We’re seeing more fire pits thanfireplaces,” Romano says. They’reeasier (turn it on/off with a clickof a button), cleaner, and moreconducive to gathering around. Consider how the deck or patiocorrelates with the interior. Themessage should be the same. Hold off on installing a full outdoor kitchen. The elements aretough on outdoor cabinets andappliances. Instead, install a largecountertop that can serve as agrilling staging ground. B
