OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAIThe Hindu Festivals like the Guru Poornima,Dussehra, Diwali, Sri Datta Jayanti, Shivarathri, Ramanavami are all celebrated in a traditional way here in the Sai Temple. It was in the year 1994 when a group of Saidevotees gathered in the basement of ahome on Geranium Street, Flushing, NewYork, and started a Satsang worshipping ShriShirdi Saibaba with a Photograph of Baba under the spiritual guidance of our Guru, Dr.Raghav Rao of Hyderabad, who has since leftfor his heavenly abode. The Health camp conducted last year for thefirst time was a tremendous success and wewere able to provide services to about 250people. We plan on expanding this service in2011.Satsang gathering grew in numbers and in late1999 Baba’s photo was moved to a rentedproperty on 46-16, Robinson street. This newhome of Baba was called Shirdi Sai Center.Along with the Satsang, Bhajans were held onevery Thursday. In 2001, a new Board wasformed to manage the activities and furtherthe growth of the temple. The management of the temple have now embarked on a mission by starting the Sai Patrika in a new form named aptly as "SaiSmriti", Yoga classes for our devotees andBharat Natyam classes for the children. We plan to start Kids corner, to inculcate Indian traditions and culture values in our children.Considering the ever increasing number ofdevotees, the Management took a decision toconstruct a new temple at this site. With thisin view, the first step to build a temple wastaken by buying the property that was rentedtill then. The construction started in early 2005and was completed by 2010. The new templewas inaugurated and Moorthi Pranaprathishtawas done on April 25, 2010.In this temple, we carry out activitiesthat were dear to Baba such as Annadan andhelping the needy. We also have plans to helpthe downtrodden and vulnerable people ofour society.Today, on April 24, 2011, we are celebratingthe anniversary of the inauguration of theShirdi Saibaba temple with a great sense ofsatisfaction in fulfilling the aspirations of thedevotees. The Palki procession on the inaugural day wasone of the special events, and we held it againon Guru Poornima day. A very joyous occasion indeed! The Palki Yatra will be conductedhereafter regularly on every GuruPoornima day.We extend our heartfelt thanks to our teamof dedicated volunteers who help us in alltemple related activities. In our temple, we strictly follow all Dharmicrituals and traditions like it is observed inShirdi Sai Samsthan and perform the fourAaratis (Kakad, Madhyana, Dhoop, Shej) toSai Baba followed by Prasad distributiondaily.Sairam !Sri Sid Kamath, Secretary2

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAI21st to 25th of April 2010It would be appropriate to introduce now one of themost important rituals of any Pranaprathishta program. According to Hindu Vedic worship we canworship God in three ways - Roopa (in a physicalform), RoopAroopa (form & formless – linga, saligrama yantra etc.) and Aroopa (formless). We beginwith the worship of the first two as it is hard for us toconceive of the Formless. It is expected that the worship of the form should slowly lead us to the formless consciousness based on our speed of progress. When we worship Baba in the form, the idol has togo through certain procedures to receive the supremespirit in it. The idol is kept immersed in water, grains, flowers, precious gems etc., signifying thephysical body’s origin out of the five elements of nature. The belief here is that Baba has taken theearthly body by embracing the pancha bhutas. Thefirst day came to an end with Jaladivasa where Babawas kept immersed in water.Devalaya (Temple) means the House of God.Whenwe build a house we have to perform certain cleansing rites. Similarly a temple construction has to gothrough a lot more formal procedures. We also useanother word called Pranaprathishta. ‘Prana’ amongother meanings also signifies the ‘Supreme Spirit’and when associated with the word Prathishta, which means installation, signifies the invocation ofthe Supreme Being to reside in an idol with all splendor and grace. In our temple we invited our Babawith devotion to reside in our presence in his majestic form, like a King on his Simhasan, and protect usfrom all the evils of both the external and internalworlds. It would be appropriate now, to touch upon a few ofthe important elements of the activities that we performed during the Pranaprathishta program. As discussed above the house has to be cleansed and madeappropriate and ready for our Baba to come in. Asmost of you know, we had a five day program covering all the necessary religious aspects. It is important to choose the right day which should be a veryauspicious day with all the best planetary positions. We had invited many rithviks (priests) who werewell versed in the Vedic rituals. We had all the important dhravya (material) and most importantly abig army of Bhaktas (devotees) from all over theworld who were fortunate to witness this wonderfulmoment. This five day program covered all the elements of cleansing the house, purifying the pedestaland the Pradhana Gopura and finally the Pranaprathishta of the idol.On April 22, the second day, we performed theVaastu Homa to cleanse the building. This is done toplease the Vaastu Purusha and cleanse the surroundings such as building, floor, the walls etc. This process also asks for forgiveness for all the vegetation andinsects that got either displaced or destroyed duringthe process of the construction. Navagraha homawas also performed to please the Navagrahas. Another main event of the day was the DattatreyaMoola Mantra homa. Lord Dattatreya is the Guru inthe form of the Trimurthy – Brahma, Vishnu andMaheshwara. Baba is considered to be in the sameGuru parampara. Baba is none other than Lord Dattatreya himself. At the end of the second day Baba'sidol was kept in Dhanyadivasa – immersed in ricegrains. On the first day (04/21/2010) many of the preparatory events were done. Ganga Pooja (worshippingand invoking the holy Ganges water) and Mahaganapathi homa were done. As we all know GanapathiPooja has to be first so that the events would go without any obstacles. Then followed events like MahaSankalpa, the Acharya Rithvik Varna (respecting thepriestly gathering and formally appointing them toconduct the process) Raksha Bandana (tying the raksha and taking a vow to participate in the celebrationwith heart and soul) etc.3

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAITemple Inauguration continued .Baba’s eyes are opened and his first sight should fallon auspicious things like, the cow, female children(Kanya), elderly ladies (Vridha Sumangalis), flowers, fruits etc.The third day, the 23rd was the day of havans –Rudra, Mrithyunjaya, Mahavishnu, Durga, Lakshmi,Saraswathi homas were performed propitiating allthe deities to bless this occasion. Since this being aFriday, the day of the goddesses, Ashtalakshmi poojawas also organized. The idea here is that we inviteall the gods and goddesses to be present and blessthe main occasion. The highlight of the day wasPushpadivasa where Baba was kept immersed inflowers so that he would emerge with full of fragrance. This is the day when the Baba Yantra is installedalong with jewelry made of gold and precious gemsbelow the idol and sealed forever. The Sai Namabooks written by devotees over a period of time werealso kept below the idol symbolizing the emergenceof Baba from the prayers of his devotees. On this dayBaba was kept in Ratnadivasa – immersed in precious gems so that he would emerge with all thebrightness of the jewels. All these three days were spent predominantly on thesurroundings and asking for support and blessings ofother deities. On the 4th and the 5th day the mainPranaprathishta events take place. On the fourthday, the 24th, the Bimba shuddhi is done since anyidol that has been carved and travelled over a longdistance by sea is not fit for worhip as it is. The cow,GoMata, equated to one’s mother was worshippedduring the Go Puja. According to our Hindu traditions, when the sacred and holy cow enters thehouse, the place is said to become cleansed and auspicious. In addition, the main Gopura pooja was alsoperformed. The main Gopura plays a very importantrole in our temples and the Gopura darshana is equalto seeing God himself. The final day was the main event when the SupremeBeing is invoked to enter and reside in the idol. SaiMoola Mantra Homa and Parivaradi Homa is alsodone along with Gopura pooja. Finally Pranaprathishta Homa is performed to invoke Baba to enterwith all his greatness into the body that has been created. This is the most auspicious of all the momentswhen Baba’s idol comes to life and Baba gives darshan to all the devotees in his absolute blissfulform. With this Baba has entered into the idol andnow ready to take all our services. Maha Abhisheka,Alankara, Veda Parayana, Shodasha upachara, Mahamangala Aarathi followed by Naivedya culminated the days’ program and the 5 day festival. All this time Baba’s eyes were kept covered. Theconcept is to open the eyes when the different Indriyas (the organs of action and perception) are invoked. The different organs of action and perceptionsare invoked by the Shodasa Nyasa homa and JeevadiThathvanyasa homa. This is done by invoking everypart of Baba’s body to be installed with the energiesof those specific organs. With this homa the priestsslowly build the body by uttering sacred hymns andinvoking the respective body elements to be installed. Now we have Baba in his most kind and compassionate form sitting like a King and showering hisblessings on whoever sets their foot in this temple. He is now here to receive his subjects, listen totheir problems and solve them. Contemplate onBaba’s beautiful form and request, pray and worshiphim to lead us to Moksha (liberation) and make usone with HIM.4

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAIBy Sri Narasimha RaoThis quality must be ingrained in a seeker from dayone, lest he loses his stride and leaves the path halfway. As a hunter waits patiently and silently for histarget a devotee too has to wait patiently for attaininghis goal. There are many trying situations in life.Aswe understand from Baba’s Satcharitra, Babanever gave any upadesha to his devotees and in factHe refused to give upadesha as evidenced throughRadhabai Deshmukh’s story. Radhabai’s story as itgoes makes it clear that Baba, in spite of her repeatedrequests and vow on fast unto death, did not giveupadesha and instead advocated Shradha and Saburias primary qualities for achieving the Malik’s blessings. A close attention to the anecdote, narrated byBaba in process of pacifying Radhabai on how youngtortoises are taken care of by mother tortoise eventhough they are on two other banks of the river. She does not transfer food and water to her childrenYet, her loving looks are enough to protect the children. Similarly, people who lovingly look at God getHis reciprocity. God's look offers peace, protectionand prosperity for His children.A test may come in the form of frustration, distress, agony, illness, mishaps, prolonged wait or a loss. Insuch moments we should seek support from the Master and hold on to him. From the story of Baba persistently following up with reluctant Shama to visitWada, Baba showed practically how one can stick to“Saburi” in their daily chores. Developing ‘Saburi’ isnot an easy thing especially in this fast world whereeverything is expected to be “instant” and if thingsdo not work out instantaneously as expected, we getdistracted or dejected. Especially in the spiritualworld “Saburi” has lot more significance as the spiritual aspirant’s success in achieving the goal dependson the level and quality of “Shradha” that he cultivates in his heart and “Saburi” to wait patiently forhis turn.Baba’s Eleven SayingsIn Baba’s famous eleven sayings, Baba indicated thatonly through Shradha and Saburi one can win Hisgrace. Baba’s eleven sayings or assurances are theguiding principles for all Baba devotees and theseeleven sayings may be broadly categorized as follows:Trust is generated out of conviction, which may notbe the result of any rational belief or intellectual wisdom, but a spiritual inspiration. Baba sowed theseeds of spiritual inspiration in the hearts of peoplewho knew of him. This Divine inspiration was soinstant and profound that they automatically tookrefuge in Him. Baba reiterated that steadfast love inGod is the gateway to eternity. Baba's teaching, bothdirect and indirect explicate the significance of'Shraddha'. Baba reiterates the spiritual guidance ofShri Krishna to Arjuna - "Who-so ever offer to Mewith love or devotion, a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, that offering of pure love is readily accepted byMe".1. Visiting Shirdi brings an end to the problems of thedevotees and will be sure of getting Divine bliss.2. Baba is active even after leaving the earthly soil.3. Surrender (Sharanagathi) with full trust is essential for Baba’s helping handVisiting Shirdi brings an end to the problems of thedevotees and will be sure of getting Divine bliss.Baba promised that one’s sufferings would come toan end as soon as one steps into Shirdi.'Saburi'; is patience and perseverance. Saburi is aquality needed throughout the path to reach the goal.5

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAIHere is another question that often comes to ourminds. Is Baba saying that those who come to Shirdiwill only be benefited by his grace? Similar questionwas troubling the mind of one of the devotees,Balaram Mankar as narrated in Satcharitra. Mankarneeded solace as his wife passed away and came toBaba. Mankar wanted to spend his life with Baba inShirdi. He was relaxed in the company of Baba inShirdi. Baba wanted to communicate a messagethrough Mankar that He is everywhere as He askedMankar to go and live in Macchindragad. Mankar, reluctantly goes to Gad as Baba insisted him on hisvisit to Macchindragad indicating that it was in hisbest interest and Mankar had no option.Baba’s Eleven continued .Baba used to declare that even if His devotee wasbeyond the seven seas He would drag him to Shirdiin the same manner as tying a thread to the leg ofsparrow and dragging it. It is not possible to step intoShirdi unless Baba wishes and this is eternal truth. Itis not simply possible to come under His compassionate umbrella unless one has accumulated punyakarma to receive Baba’s kind blessings. During thetime when Baba was in physical form and Baba waslittle known to the people, Baba used to choose thoseblessed souls and pull them to Him. This was thecase with Nana Chandorkar and Das Ganu whonever heard of Him till they were literally pulled byHim. How their spiritual pursuit turned the corneras soon as they saw Baba is known to every Sai devotee. Similarly, Kakaji from Wadi was prompted byMata Saptashringi to take Baba’s darshan and as soonas he stepped into Dwarakamai, his mental wearinessdisappeared.Having full faith (Shraddha) in Baba's words,Mankar came to the Gad. He was much pleased withthe lovely sight, pure water, healthy air and the surroundings of the place, and began to practice assiduously the meditations as recommended by Sai Baba.In contrast to general experience of devotees feelingbaba’s presence in vision during deep meditation,Mankar felt Baba’s presence in usual consciousnessstate.Shradha indicates unstinted faith without any doubt. But is it possible to have that firm faith in HIM always whatever be the conditions one is in? Is that sosimple (stepping into Shirdi) to get Baba’s grace?Same question occurred to Damu Anna while he wasshampooing Baba’s feet as he felt: ‘So many devoteesare coming to Baba, will all of them be benefited?’ AsBaba knows what is going on in each and everyone’smind, he answers quickly as: "Look at that mangotree and its thick flowers. If all the flowers becomemangoes, how nice it will be. But at the floweringstage itself a lot will fall off. Some will fall off at thestage of tender mangoes.Mankar was so pleased seeing Baba in physical formin Gad and asked Him why he was sent to Gad whenhe wanted to spend time in Shirdi. Sai Baba replied "In Shirdi many thoughts and ideas began to rise inyour mind and I sent you here to rest your unsteadymind. You thought that I was in Shirdi with a bodycomposed of the five elements and three and a halfcubits in length, and not outside of it.Now you see and determine for yourself whether theperson you see here now is the same you saw atShirdi. It is for this reason that I sent you here." So,All that we need is Shraddha and Saburi to feel thepresence of Baba wherever we are.Due to plucking by birds, and children hitting withstones, some more will fall off. Finally very few become ripe mangoes. The same with these devoteesalso.(To be concluded)6

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAIOn the right toe are spread His two fingers-theindex and middle ones. By this posture Babameans to say, as it were-if you want to see MyLight, be egoless and most humble and meditate on My toe through the opening betweenthe two branches-index and middle fingersand then you will be able to see My Light. Thisis the easiest means of attaining devotion. How to meditate on Baba? No one has beenable to fathom the nature or the form of Almighty. Even the Vedas and the thousandtongued Shesha are not able to describe itfully; but the devotees cannot but know andlook at the form of the Lord, for they knowthat His Feet are the only means of their happiness. They know no other method of attaining the supreme goal of life, except meditating on the Holy Feet. Hemadpant suggests aneasy way of devotion and meditation asbelowLight houses are constructed at various placesin the sea, to enable the boatmen to avoidrocks and dangers, and make them sail safely.Sai Baba’s stories serve a similar purpose inthe ocean of worldly existence. They surpassnectar in sweetness, and make our worldlypath smooth and easy to traverse. As the dark fortnight of every month wearsout gradually, the moonlight also wanes inthe same degree and on the new moon day,we do not see the moon at all, nor do we gether light. Therefore, when the bright fortnightbegins, people are very anxious to see themoon. On the first day, the moon is not seenand on the second day also she is not clearlyvisible. Then the people are asked to see themoon through an opening between the twobranches of a tree, and when they begin to seethrough this aperture eagerly and after concentrating on (range of knowledge), the distant small crescent of the moon comes, totheir great delight, within their ken. Following this clue, let us try to see Baba's Light.Look at Baba's posture, how fine it is! He issitting with His legs folded, the right leg heldacross the left knee. The fingers of His lefthand are spread on the right-foot.Blessed are the stories of the saints. When theyenter our hearts through the ears, the body consciousness or egoism and the sense of duality vanish; and when they are stored in theheart, doubts fly out to all sides, pride of thebody will fall, and wisdom will be stored inabundance. The description of Baba’s pure fame, and thehearing of the same, with love, will destroy thesins of the devotee and, therefore, this is thesimple Sadhana for attaining salvation.10

GOOD LUCK DRIVING SCHOOL, INC.147-08 HILLSIDE AVENUE, NY 11435How to meditate continued .The Sadhana for Krita Age was Shamadama(tranquillity of mind and body), for Treta Age,sacrifice, for Dwapara, worship, and for Kali(present) Age, it is singing of the name and gloryof the Lord. This last Sadhana is open to all the people of thefour varnas (Brahmins, etc.). The other Sadhanas, viz. Yoga, Yagya (sacrifice), Dhyana (meditation)and Dharana (concentration) are very difficult topractice, but singing and hearing the stories andthe glory of the Lord (Sai Baba) is very easy. Wehave only to turn our attention towards them. Thelistening and singing of the stories will remove theattachment to the senses and their objects, andwill make the devotees dispassionate, and willultimately lead them to self-realization.Reproduced from our Web siteunder Blog SectionLICENSED BY THE STATE OF NEW YORKWhere everybody says“THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO GET YOUR LICENSE”LEARN TO DRIVEFROM THE BEST & PATIENT INSTRUCTORSIN TOWN AT LOW COSTFREE PICK UPTAKE DDC (6 HOUR CLASS)SAVE 10% OFF YOUR INSURANCEFOR THREE YEARS WITH ONLY ONE CERTIFICATE &REDUCE UP TO 4 POINTS FROM YOURDRIVING RECORDCARS AVAILABLE FOR ROAD TESTAUTOMATIC & STICK SHIFTWE ACCEPT VISA, MASTER CARD, DISCOVER &AMERICAN EXPRESSIF BUYING WITH CREDIT CARD, PAYMENT MUST BEDONE AT OFFICETEL: 718-526-6788; 718-526-7350PURE VEGETARIANWE DO CATERING FOR ALLWe deal in matrimonialPunjabi, Gujarati and South IndiansContact: Jetander SapraEmail: bandbajabaraat@yahoo.com718-413-8890 ; 646-434-6246Special Lunch Menu availableSurya Sweets and Snacks250-18 Hillside Ave Bellerose NY 11426Tel: (718)-437-7770 ; Fax: (718)-347-777111

OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAIBy Sri Narasimha RaoInThe boy fakir also accompanied it. When the procession reached the outskirts of Shirdi,it stopped to payhomage to God Khandoba. Mhalsapati, the priest ofKhandoba temple, eyed the fakir, and out of spontaneous admiration, exclaimed, "Welcome, ye SaiBaba". It was as if the Divine Will that had given theboy this name, for that very name stuck to him all hislife. From that day (1854), the boy stayed in Shirdi. But what was his real name and his native place noneever came to know.Maharashtra, there is a district named Aurangabad, in which there is a village namedDhoopkhede. Chandbhai was the patel of that village. Once he lost his horse. Chandbhai searched andsearched, but to no avail. A week after, while he wason the search, he noticed by the roadside a young ladof sixteen, having sedate looks and wearing the garbof a fakir. This beautiful boy with lustrous eyes atonce captured Chandbhai's heart. Reading, as if theonlooker's mind, the fakir beckoned Chandbhai andasked, "What are you looking for, Patel?”People at Shirdi soon discovered the perfect Saintliness of the fakir and by and by, many of them became his devotees (bhaktas). A few, however, whowere themselves of a saintly nature, saw the realworth of this Godly person. Sadhu Gangagir said,"This is a gem. By your great good luck, you have gothim." Anandnath said, "This is a jewel you will knowits worth in the immediate future.""I have lost my horse. For this whole week, I amsearching him," said Chand, approaching the fakir, with folded hands. "Then why go further? Your animal is grazing beyond that hedge, there, look!" toldthe fakir, with. a gentle smile, pointing to a thickhedge beyond which nothing could really be seen.Chandbhai went and saw, and Io! The horse wasfound quietly grazing there. From places like Bombay and Poona, you can now goto Shirdi directly by State Transport buses. You canalso travel upto Manmad or Kopargaon by CentralRailways and then take a bus to Shirdi.Chandbhai was awe-struck. How did this fakir recognise him as the patel, how did the boy know thatthere, was a horse beyond the hedge and that it belonged to him all this struck him with wonder. Hewas convinced that the boy had a spark of Divinity inhim. As Chandbhai related this incident among hisfriends and neighbours, the boy's fame spread like adrop of oil on the surface of water. When Sai Baba first came to Shirdi, it was a littleknown, underdeveloped village. But as Baba cameand his fame spread in all quarters, Shirdi also grewand improved. Like Pandharpur, it is no
