Faculties and/or certain study programmes may impose additional requirements.2Undergraduate study programme information 2015Prospective students in Grade 12 (final school-year) must usetheir final Grade 11 year mark (promotion mark) to apply. NoGrade 12 marks will be considered for provisional admission.Please note that prospective students who have already leftschool should use their NSC/IEB* Certificate to apply (alsorefer to “Higher Education South Africa” on page 9). Additionalselection criteria are applicable in applications for selectionprogrammes (see faculty tables from page 11 in this brochureor refer to www.up.ac.za).Provisional admission is granted on the results obtained in thefinal Grade 11 year mark (promotion mark). Please note that thefinal Grade 12 results remain the determining factor with regardto admission. Also note that the achievement of the minimumrequirements does not necessarily guarantee admission to anystudy programme.The calculation of an Admission Point Score (APS) is based ona candidate’s achievement in any SIX recognised NSC 20-creditsubjects (not only designated subjects), by using the NSCseven-point rating scale in the table below. Life Orientation is a10-credit subject and may not be used for calculating the APS.Neither can Mathematics Paper 3 be used for this purpose. 3.Closing datesApplication for admissionApplications open on 1 March of the year preceding the yearof study. Owing to the large number of applications receivedevery year, prospective students are encouraged to apply assoon as possible from 1 March. We recommend that you applyonline at www.up.ac.za. Once your application form has beenprocessed, you will receive an eight-digit UP student number.You are also welcome to download an application form from thewebsite. You may follow the progress of your application onlinevia the UP Portal (Student Centre). Visit www.up.ac.za/portal.However, if you do not have access to the internet you arestill welcome to submit an application on paper. Just makesure that you do not use the previous year’s application formfor this purpose. Application forms are distributed to schoolsor may be requested by calling 27 (0)12 420 3111. A nonrefundable application levy of R300 must accompany everyapplication. The University will only accept original applicationforms. Faxed, scanned, or emailed application forms will notbe accepted. Each student must complete only one applicationform.The application form provides for a first and second choice ofstudy programme. It is strongly recommended that you alsoindicate a second choice study programme on your applicationform. Refer to www.up.ac.za/admissioninfo. It is not advisableto apply for two selection programmes as your first and secondchoice. Selection programmes are study programmes withearly closing dates and limited space and must preferablybe indicated as first choice on your application form. It isparticularly important to note that applications for admission toany of the study programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciencesand to the selection programmes BScArch – Bachelor ofScience Architecture or BScInt – Bachelor of Science InteriorArchitecture in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environmentand Information Technology, will only be considered if therelevant study programme is indicated as a first choice on yourapplication form.The following documents must accompany your application: A certified copy of your final Grade 11 examination reportindicating your promotion mark A certified copy of your ID or your birth certificateYour completed application form together with the prescribed,non-refundable application levy of R300, must reach the CSCbefore the closing date.Application for admission to undergraduate academic studyprogrammes for both South African and non-South Africancitizens close on the dates (specified in the faculty tables frompage 11) in the year preceding the year of study.Restriction on student numbersOwing to constraints on the facilities of the University, the intakeof students in all the study programmes is limited. It may evenbe the case that quotas are reached long before the closingdates. Please note that meeting the minimum requirementsof a study programme, as specified in this brochure, does notguarantee your admission.4.Language policy and medium ofinstructionIn conducting its business, the University uses two officiallanguages: English and Afrikaans. In formal education, themedium of instruction is either English or Afrikaans, or both ofthese languages, provided that there is a demand and that it isacademically and economically justifiable. However, it remainsthe student’s responsibility to ascertain on an annual basis inwhich language a module and any further level of that moduleis presented. In respect of administrative and other services, astudent has the right to choose whether the University shouldcommunicate with him or her in English or Afrikaans.5.Bursaries, awards and loans(financial aid)Students who are interested in the support bursaries and loansadministered by the University should submit an applicationvia the University’s website www.up.ac.za/feesfunding. Criteria and conditionsGuaranteed undergraduate achievement awards are basedon the average percentage obtained (not on the number ofdistinctions) in the end examination of the final school-yearsubject to the following conditions: Undergraduateachievementawardsaremadeautomatically to newly registered undergraduate studentswho meet the award criteria. Students do NOT apply forthese awards. First-year students who register for studies at UP directlyafter Grade 12 (final school-year) or who took a gapyear(s) after their final school-year, who meet the awardcriteria, will be considered. Students who have previously registered at a tertiaryeducational institution prior to registration at UP willnot be considered for an achievement award. Studentswho registered at UP in previous years, are also notconsidered. Qualifying students must be South African citizens orpermanent residents in South Africa, or they must becitizens of a Southern African Development Community(SADC) country. The average percentage for award purposes is the averageof the actual percentages obtained for all recognisedNSC/IEB/Cambridge subjects taken, in their final schoolyear end examinations, based on the calculations done bythe University of Pretoria. The average percentage is not rounded off.The awards are finalised on the basis of the final marksthat the University receives from the Department of BasicEducation for the final school-year. Results obtainedfor papers that have been re-marked are not taken intoaccount for award purposes.Awards are fully repayable if students discontinue orterminate their studies in the relevant study programmefor whatever reason during the year i
