It wasonly after Miss Collins went on amorning neighborhood patrol thatshe found out the real reason forMatt’s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair downthe stairs. It was Matt, steadyingShawnetta as he helped lower herdown the stairs and then push her tothe corner bus stop.“She’s a girl in my parish youthgroup,” Matt explained to MissCollins. There are many ways todescribe Matt’s actions—a randomact of kindness, making a differenceone person at a time. Jesus wouldunderstand. When the lawyercorrectly identified the goodSamaritan as the one who hadtreated the injured man withcompassion, Jesus said simply, “Goand do likewise” (Luke 10:37).Copyright J. The Germanic influence wasstrong in those days, reflected in a series of questionsposed to the candidate about his intentions. The priest’s role in the celebration of Mass had bythen come to the fore, as the ritual notes that Massvestments must be worn, the hands of the priest must beanointed with chrism, and a chalice with wine and waterand a paten with a host must be given. Up to then, theordination rite had stressed the presbyter as a collaboratorwith the bishop and a member of the order of presbyters. Then, in a not-so-subtle shift, the presbyter came to beseen as a “priest” designated to celebrate the Mass and, asthe prayer suggests, to touch the chalice. By these days, remember, the cup had long vanished from Communionfor the laity. A thousand years ago, today’s patterns werealready in place. The priest no longer saw himself as amember of a council of elders, a presbytery, and in somedioceses he had little influence over the bishop. Instead,he was either a pastor, with relationship to the eucharisticcommunity in the parish, or he was a priest monk, offeringMass for the salvation of the departed or the intentions ofthe living.—Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.Did you know?Underage alcohol use could lead to larger problemsThe negative consequences of underage drinking are morewidespread and serious than previously know. Researchshows that alcohol can change the way the brain worksand could lead to long-term consequences. Many moredangers of underage drinking are immediate, includingalcohol poisoning, physical assault and poor decisionmaking. You can help protect your children from the risksassociated with drinking by maintaining opencommunication, and by expressing a clear, consistentmessage that underage drinking is unacceptable.
