From the RectorThis Annual Report marks my sixth as Rector of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. I can finally say that I no longerfeel like the new rector. These years have been characterized by a great deal of learning and growingtogether, by discovering new depths in our spiritual lives, by holding fast to our call to serve God’smission now and into the future, by conflicts and disagreements and hurts, but mostly by a profoundsense of joy and gratitude for our life as a community of faith.Old news is good news. In our case, the old news is that we are learning more and more to practicegood stewardship and are on sound financial footing. Thanks to the diligent and faithful efforts of FredStaley, our Associate for Administration, Sharon Lawrence McGee, our Financial Coordinator, andthe Finance Sub-Committee, we are able to carry out God’s mission in this place with boldness andjoy because we know what resources we have, we are able to plan responsibly, and we are able to riskappropriately, all while confident that we are living within our means.We have shared together in glorious worship that connects us with those faithful in ages past andall the company of heaven as it nourishes us to carry out God’s work. We have the gift of a thrivingand growing cadre of children and youth whose faith is being nurtured in love and grace. We aredeveloping a web of ways to care for each other, especially in times of crisis or grief. We are engagingin—no longer simply supporting—life-changing service to people in need around the corner andaround the world. We continue to get the word out and welcome new people into our parish family.Every week someone will come up to me to express their surprise and gratitude at the warmth ofwelcome they have received here. I give thanks for all those exercising leadership in all our ministries,both parishioners and staff.I am certain that in these coming years that we will be pushed to new challenges of courageousministry as the landscape of our world changes ever more rapidly. Carrying out God’s mission torestore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ will require creativity, strength of spirit,generosity of heart, and profound compassion for the least of God’s children. This work will not bebusiness as usual, and I believe we are setting ourselves up quite well to be responsive to the needs ofthe world for that unity with God and each other.As we pause to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of the past year and to celebrate oursuccess, we must also ask for grace to resist the temptation to rest on our laurels and to continue toheed God’s call to love and serve in every aspect of our life.Thank you for sharing in the ministry of this parish family and for giving methe privilege of serving alongside. From the Senior WardenLeadership and Governance Sub-Committee, chairIt has been my distinct pleasure and joy to serve this last year as Senior Warden. I have seen theparish grow and flourish with enthusiasm and prayerfulness. The addition of a full-time priest and amid-week Christian education and compline service have brought us together in a way that is trulyblessed. I am so very pleased with the effort and energy of the Vestry in striving to make the smallernumber of members continue to support one another and the parish needs. The two Junior WardensI worked with were entirely engaged and hard-working and I thank them for their loving support.This job cannot be done without the daily relationship with Father James, the clergy, and all the staff. Ithank you for believing in me and being there for me whenever and however Ineeded each and every one of you. From the Junior WardenBuildings and Grounds Sub-Committee, ChairParkingFor the last four or so years, Father James continuously warned of the existential threat from the continuederosion of our parking and the need to take action. This time last year the Church’s parking for weekdayevents was based on an understanding with the Town of Palm Beach that parishioners would not beticketed on the 200 and 300 blocks of Barton Avenue, provided the Town received prior notice of the needfor parking. Today there is unrestricted parking on these blocks for Church events, which is noted on thestreet signage. A variety of unsuccessful attempts to solve the parking issue led to the difficult decision topush forward with a plan to construct parking on Church property on the north side of Barton Avenueand on the parcel directly across from the Church on the west side of South County Road. With the strongleadership of Father James and Fred Staley, the process was commenced with informational webcasts to theparishioners and our neighbors. A team was assembled (Harry Oyer, Conklin & Lewis, Gene Pandula, andthe Junior Warden), plans were produced, and discussions commenced with Town Hall. All the while, FredStaley worked to gain the support of the neighbors for our on-site parking. The seriousness of the Church’sneeds and its resolution to solve the problem precipitated meaningful discussions with our neighbors onBarton Avenue, which resulted in their petitioning the Town to allow our parishioners to participate in theirrestricted parking with appropriate signage. This positive outcome would not have occurred if the Churchhad not decided to go forward with on-site parking and is viewed generally in the Town as an example of thepositive results that can come from honest dialogue and polite behavior.RestorationThe restoration of the Church’s exterior that has been in progress for the last 4 years and costing 3.4million will be complete by the end of March on budget.SecurityA dialogue on security and the implementation of the recommendation of the Town of Palm Beach PoliceForce has started and will be one of the important issues to be addressed in 2017.Hurricane Preparedness GuideHurricane Matthew, though a near miss, provided the first real test run for the Guide. An “after action”meeting resulted in some changes and additions to the Guide.TermitesWithin almost exactly a year after the 2015 extermination was completed, we undertook a subsequentextermination this past spring.
