Anvil Solutions forGreen Building Design

B u i l d i n gConnectionsT h a t L a s tAnvil International is the world’s largestand most complete manufacturer ofpiping connections and support systems. For over 150 years, Anvil’s products, services, and representatives haveearned them a reputation for buildingdependable, lasting connections —pipe to pipe and people to people. We are committed to growing as anorganization, as well as enhancing ourofferings to meet the needs of ourcustomers. Anvil continues to expandour product line with innovative, forwardthinking solutions.Because a concern for the environmentis a strong part of our legacy, we areproud members of the U.S. GreenBuilding Council (USGBC). As part ofthe USGBC, we can help building ownersachieve points toward LEED certificationwith our extensive selection of productsmade from 90% recycled materials. In this brochure, you will learn moreabout Anvil products and how LEEDcertification can benefit your companyand community.Sinai Renaissance Educational CampusAnvil’s products and Design Services Team playeda valuable role in the first LEED Silver building inthe Detroit area — the 100 million dollar SinaiRenaissance Education Campus which opened in 2005.Helping to save on money, labor, and time, Anvil’s teamreviewed and improved upon the initial designs for theproject’s two mechanical rooms by proposing a flexiblesystem which prevented a costly rebuild. In addition,Anvil’s product line helped the building owner achievepoints toward LEED certification.Building Green with AnvilEnergy Efficiency. Adaptability. Sustainability. Recent trends reveal that theinterest in and demand for green building designs, materials, and products hasgreatly increased — and will only continue to do so — in the coming years. Ifyou are a builder, engineer, building owner, and/or developer in the constructionindustry, you must keep up-to-date and informed on the latest green buildingdesign methods and requirements.Anvil understands this growing focus on sustainable buildings, and we willprovide you with helpful, straightforward guidance — as well as comprehensivepiping solutions — to help you build successful green projects that willsubstantially benefit your company and community for many years to come.If you are questioning to what extent green design will influence yourprojects now and in the future, you may want to consider the followingindustry statistics * : LEED-New Construction (LEED-NC) project registrations rose to over1,000 in 2005, with an increase of more than 130 million gross square feet ofgreen building project area. Every branch of the U.S. military has adopted mandates, orders, incentives, and initiatives to promote green building projects, with the areas ofgovernment and education leading in terms of most growth in green buildingprojects. In addition, over a dozen states and more than three dozen localitieshave enacted incentives for green building. By 2010, the U.S. market in non-residential green buildings is expected togrow up to 10%, creating a market of close to 20 billion. 85% of all architects, engineers, and contractors are involved in green buildingprojects, and close to 60% specify products for green building. Mechanical systems are the third highest product specified by architects, engineers, and contractors. To assist you in becoming part of these growing green trends in the constructionindustry, Anvil representatives can help you identify the right products to suit yourgreen building projects. We also offer advice on Anvil’s LEED submittal forms tohelp building owners earn points toward LEED certification.Sinai Renaissance Educational CampusDetroit, Michigan* Source: HPAC Engineering Insider Newsletter, March 2006 issue.2

G reen OrganizationsWhether your building involves New Construction orExisting Buildings, Anvil can consult with you onincorporating the right products and design elements toachieve maximum energy efficiency and water savings. What is the USGBC?What is the CaGBC?What is LEED?The United StatesGreen Building Council(USGBC) is the country’sleading coalition ofexperts from every sector of thebuilding industry working to promotebuildings that are environmentallysustainable and responsible, economically profitable, and physicallyhealthy places for people to live andconduct business. The Canadian GreenBuilding Council(CaGBC) promotes thedesign and constructionof environmentally sustainablebuildings in Canada.Developed using aconsensus processand in collaborationwith non-USGBCmembers, the United States GreenBuilding Council’s Leadership in Energyand Environmental Design (LEED)Green Building Rating System servesas a national standard for voluntarydevelopment of green buildings thatare environmentally sustainable.Working with research organizationsand representatives across multipleindustries and governmental agencies, the USGBC is helping to change howbuildings are constructed. For moreinformation, visit www.usgbc.org.The council is made up ofrepresentatives from the design andbuilding industry that set standardsand offer guidance for the creationof green buildings. For moreinformation, visit www.cagbc.org.LEED has been adopted widely bycities, states, and government agenciesas a construction standard for theirbuildings. Architects, developers, builders, and manufacturers use LEEDas a trusted resource for expertiseon project certification, professionalaccreditation, and training. LEED GREEN BUILDING RATING SYSTEMLEED-NC New ConstructionLEED-EB Existing BuildingsFirst launched in 1998, the New Construction ratingsystem (LEED-NC) applies green design principles tocommercial, institutional, and government buildingprojects. LEED-NC is based on the idea of an integrateddesign approach from the beginning of a projectto its conclusion. By examining the environmentalimpacts of materials and site selection, as well asdemolition and construction, LEED-NC identifies lowcost strategies that offer green benefits for builders, occupants, owners, as well as the environment. Formore information, please visit www.usgbc.org/leed/nc.The LEED rating system for Existing Buildings (LEEDEB) promotes operational efficiency with minimalenvironmental impact. Through well-established,performance-based benchmarks, building ownersand operators can consistently measure operations, improvements, and maintenance over the course ofa building’s lifetime. LEED-EB principles promoteaffordable, environmentally sustainable ways to buildhealthy buildings, including options for certificationand re-certification. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS &TIPS FOR GREEN BUILDING DESIGNCAN A SINGLE BUILDING PRODUCT ACHIEVE POINTS INTHE LEED RATING SYSTEM? WHAT PART DO BUILDINGMATERIALS PLAY IN THE LEED RATING SYSTEM?Most building materials can only contribute to a building owner’sability to achieve LEED points. To meet LEED’s performance-basedrequirements, it must be demonstrated that the products used ina project have the proper characteristics. While some LEED pointsrequire that certain minimums or limits are met, other points requireFAQ sSome of the most commonthe gathering of specific product data in order to calculate the aggregateenvironmental or health value of a given selection of products. In theMaterials and Resources LEED category, products with any recycledcontent can help earn LEED points. Review the LEED guidelines to findout how to earn points in addition to those for using materials withrecycled content.questions we hear aboutLEED are listed here.HOW CAN BUILDING PRODUCTS BECOME LEED CERTIFIED?For more information,Building products cannot be LEED certified. HOW CAN USING ANVIL PRODUCTS HELP A BUILDINGACHIEVE LEED CERTIFICATION?The building materials selected can prove significant in the total numberof LEED points that a building owner earns. Anvil, a member of theUSGBC, has experience helping builders and specifying engineersidentify the right products made from recycled materials to best suit aproject. We can help building owners obtain LEED certification pointsby providing our submittal form indicating that Anvil products are madefrom 90% recycled content.
