These options can be changed later if you choose to accept thedefaults now.Customize Settings is optional. You may decide that you need more harddrive space than 60 GB and/or morememory (RAM) than 2GB (IT recommendsat least 4 GB), but these settings can bechanged at any time. Part 4 of thisdocument includes instructions forchanging your virtual machine settings afteryour virtual machine has been created. If you choose to customize this virtual machine later (and accept the defaults for now), click“Finish” and in the window that pops up, name your virtual machine and click “Save”:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.18

7. Your virtual machine will now start up automatically and begin installing Windows 10.Follow the Windows prompts to install Windows 10 on your virtual machine. After you completethe setup and get to the Windows 10 desktop, you will be able to install software for Windows, including Office 365.If you receive an error message at this point, go to Part 4 of these instructions for resolutions tocommon issues. If you do not find a solution there, bring your device to the Help Desk forassistance.NOTE: Once you have completed the Windows 10 setup and are logged into your virtual machineand able to install other software, the Windows 10 ISO is not longer needed and can be detachedfrom your virtual machine. For assistance, follow the instructions for detaching the Windows ISO inPart 4.Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.19

Part 4: Resolving Errors and Making ChangesThere are a lot of little steps involved with installing VMware Fusion and setting up a Windows 10virtual machine. This section includes instructions for resolving common errors and making changesto the default virtual machine configuration. ERROR MESSAGE: “Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe” . p21 INSTRUCTIONS: Change virtual machine settings to improve performance . p23 INSTRUCTIONS: Detach Windows 10 ISO after Windows 10 has been installed . p27Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.20

ERROR MESSAGE: “Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe.”RESOLUTION: This message looks terrifying, but generally indicates that VMware Fusion is unable toaccess something on your system. To resolve this issue:1. Restart the computer (making sure it restarts and doesn’t simply sleep and wake up):NOTE: You may need to close some applications, including VMware Fusion, to restart your Mac.To completely close an application in macOS, click on the name of the Program (with theapplication open, this will be to the right of the Apple symbol in the top left of the screen), andselect Quit from the very bottom of the drop-down menu.2. After rebooting, you should receive the following message (if you do not receive this messageimmediately, reopen VMware Fusion and try to launch your virtual machine again):Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.21

3. Follow the prompt to Open Security Preferences.4. Click the box to “Allow” VMware Fusion to load:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.22

INSTRUCTIONS: Change virtual machine settings to improve performance. The VMware Fusion virtual machine setup wizard creates virtual machines with a default hard drive sizeof 60 GB and memory (RAM) of 2 GB, but you may find that the machine runs better with a little moreRAM and depending on the size of the files you will be working with, you may want to add more harddrive space.Bentley IT recommends at least 4 GB for your virtual machine, but while your virtual machine is running,it will take whatever RAM you assign to it from your physical machine. If your physical machine has 4 GBand you give all 4 GB to your virtual machine, you may run into performance issues on both machines. Ifyour physical machine has 8 GB RAM, giving your virtual machine 4 GB will leave your physical machinewith 4 GB (note that when the virtual machine is powered off, this RAM is no longer being used by thevirtual machine so it will be available to your physical machine). For the best performance, ITrecommends powering off your virtual machine when you aren’t using it.To change the settings for your virtual machine:1. Shut down your virtual machine.a. You can do this either through the Windows 10 Start Menu within the virtual machine,or through VMware Fusion by selecting “Virtual Machine” and “Shut Down” from thedrop-down menu:b. When prompted, confirm that you would like to proceed by clicking “Shut Down”:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.23

2. Once the machine has shut down completely, click on the settings icon (the little wrench icon)on the top of the virtual machine pane:3. From the virtual machine’s Settings, if you’d like to add or remove memory (RAM) from yourvirtual machine, choose “Processor & Memory”:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.24

4. The slider will be the default 2GB, and the checkmark below it shows how much memory is leftfor your physical computer. To adjust the memory (RAM) on the virtual machine, simple movethe slider to the left or right. 1 GB RAM is equal to 1024 MB, so 2 GB 2048 MB and 4 GB 4096MB, etc.5. When you have selected the amount of memory you’d like to assign to your virtual machine, you can either click on “Show All” to view and change other settings (hard drive space changeswill be shown next), or close the “Processors & Memory”:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.25

6. To make changes to your virtual machine’s hard drive space, choose “Hard Disk (SCSI)” from thevirtual machines Settings pane:7. Grab and move the slider to the left or right to change the size of the hard disk. Remember toleave plenty of disk space for your physical machine:8. Once your hard disk is set to the size you’d like, click “Apply.”9. You will be prompted to wait until the setting change has finished:Once you are returned to the Settings panel, your changes are complete and you can close Settings andpower on your adjusted virtual machine.Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.26

INSTRUCTIONS: Detach Windows 10 ISO from VM after Windows 10 has been installed. The Windows 10 ISO file that was dropped into the VMware Fusion virtual machine wizard was forinstalling Windows 10 on your virtual machine (much like putting a Windows installation DVD into theCD/DVD drive). Once Windows 10 has been successfully installed, the ISO can be removed from yourvirtual machine (if you do not remove it, you may receive prompts asking if you still need it).To remove the ISO from your virtual machine:1. Shut down your virtual machine.a. You can do this either through the Windows 10 Start Menu within the virtual machine,or through VMware Fusion by selecting “Virtual Machine” and “Shut Down” from thedrop-down menu:b. When prompted, confirm that you would like to proceed by clicking “Shut Down”:Updated May 2019 by Bentley University Client Services.27
