A Message from the Superintendentof Broward County Public Schools,Robert RuncieEstablished 1915BROWARDCounty Public SchoolsWelcome to the 10th annual South Florida Gifted andTalented Symposium. In honor of our decade-longcommitment to bringing teachers, administrators, and parents together to share best practices, we arecelebrating this milestone with two of our partnersin educational excellence: The Broward Center forthe Performing Arts and the Museum of Discoveryand Science. Our theme PUSH YOUR TALENTS TO THELIMIT; Adventures in Arts Integration, emphasizes ourcommitment to enrich our classrooms and give giftedstudents the chance to reach their highest potential. The ultimate challenge for education is to place allchildren on pathways toward success in school and inlife. Through engagement with the arts, young peoplecan better begin life-long journeys of developing theircapabilities and contributing to the world around them.Content enrichment and the arts teach young peoplehow to learn by giving them the first step - the desireto learn. Broward’s commitment to Turn Around Artsschools has shown that the arts can play a vital role inlearning how to learn, an essential ability for fosteringachievement and growth throughout their lives.Education is becoming more individualized and BrowardCounty is recognized for our universal screening, gifted enrichment and Social Emotional Learning. Whoteaches, what is taught, where teaching takes place, and how teaching occurs are evolving dramatically incommunities across Broward County Public Schools andthe nation. A key factor in changing American educationfor the better, is to increase high quality personalizedlearning in the lives of students. Why is gifted education in such flux? In simplest terms, the reason is because America is in transition. Weare a more diverse society, facing daunting demandsfrom global, social, and technological innovation. TheAmerican economy is shifting from a manufacturingdriven engine to a services-driven enterprise. If ourgifted students are to succeed and to contribute to whatFederal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan describesas our “economy of ideas,” they will need an educationthat develops imaginative, flexible, and tough-mindedthinking. The arts powerfully nurture the ability to thinkin this manner.Learning in the arts does not only impact how youngpeople learn to think, but also how they feel andbehave. Parents and other stakeholders want to equipgifted students for professionally and personallyrewarding careers, and they recognize that to do sowe must give them greatly enriched experiences. Asthese researchers have confirmed, young people canbe better prepared for the 21st century through qualitylearning experiences in and through the arts. The School Board of Broward County, FloridaTop Row: Left to RightAnn Murray Robin Bartleman Nora Rupert Dr. Rosalind OsgoodLaurie Rich Levinson Patricia Good Laurie AlhadeffFront Row: Left to RightHeather P. Program Synopsis (con’t)Program Synopsis (con’t)LITERACY AND THE ARTSWhat Would Socrates Do? Concepts, Essential Questions & InquiryDr. Rick CourtrightAll Levels & All Subjects, Parents (Session 2: Keller Science Theater)The fine and performing arts, literature and the sciences, all have inquiry and understanding as the prime outcome of the learningprocess. This session will utilize essential questions and Socratic inquiry to get beyond just the facts and knowledge; engaginglearners in the examination of various concepts is best accomplished through questioning. Concepts are at the heart of qualitycurriculum that provides rigor, depth and complexity.Tapping Into Student Strengths Using Universal Design for LearningNaomi ChurchElementary - All Subjects (Session 1: Lab 3)Explore how to use the arts when designing instruction to tap into students’ strengths and increase engagement. This session willbridge the UDL theory with practical implementation strategies for a standards-based curriculum incorporating the arts. By presumingdifferences in student background knowledge, learning styles, and cognitive strengths, and then resourcing their classroom with acomplete tool set of supports, educators establish an environment that is presumptively inclusive. The Power of Presence-Acting Techniques for Teaching and Classroom ManagementTammy Holder & Amanda CorbettAll Levels & All Subjects (Session 2: JM Family Theater)This workshop will explore acting techniques and reflect on the impact and application these exercises have for the classroomteacher. Teachers will experience relaxation, vocal variance and improvisational techniques that can be implemented into their dailyclassroom routine.
