wood typesAlder is a softer wood with a finestraight grain and even texture.Color is light brown with yellow orreddish tinge, with little differencebetween heartwood and sapwood.Alder does not evolve in color ordarken when exposed to light or heatas other woods do, and takes stainsand finishes well. More than some ofthe other woods, care must be takento avoid damage due to its softernature. Some small tight knots canbe found with standard Alder.Rustic Alder refers to the Rusticversion of this wood type. RusticAlder is characterized by knots, burlsand mineral streaks found on centerpanels, stiles and rails of the door,and on the drawer headers, whichcould impact hardware placement.Knots will be sound and will beclosed, but certain angles couldshow light through the knots. GlazingRustic Alder will enhance theseunique characteristics.Cherry displays a distinctivegrain pattern and warm color. Thecolor ranges from nearly white todark reddish brown. Dark pockets,pin knots, and random streaks arecommon. More than most woods,Cherry will darken when exposedto light, especially in light stains.The more sun Cherry receives, thefaster it will darken. This will be mostevident in new wood and will slow asit ages.Lyptus is a hard, fine-grainhardwood with a rich, warm tone.Lyptus comes from fast-growingeucalyptus trees that are ready tobe harvested within 14 to 16 yearsof planting. These trees are grownon non-tropical, certified plantations.Color variations can be extreme, butthey are minimized when you choosea darker stain. More than mostwoods, Lyptus mellows and darkenswith exposure to light. When Lyptusis stained in a dark color, it looksvery much like mahogany.Maple is a versatile hardwoodwith a fine, smooth grain. It varies incolor from nearly white to a slightlyreddish brown. Mineral or sugarstreaks occur naturally in Mapleand can vary from piece to piece.Variations will be more noticeable inlighter stains.Quarter Sawn Oak is milled atan angle of 60 to 90 degrees fromthe grain, allowing rays and flecks tobecome visible, giving the wood aunique, often vintage, character anddimension.Walnut is a strong, stable Americanhardwood known for wide colorvariation. It ranges in color fromcreamy white to a medium purplishbrown. Walnut cabinetry will haveboth flowing grain and straight grain.This combination is a treasuredcharacteristic of Walnut, and isshowcased when Walnut is finishedin Natural. However, Walnut takesall available stains well.
