Dehumidification Division – IndustrialHoneyCombe Wheels & Desiccant Options

Munters Invented HoneyCombe TechnologyToday, it is generally accepted that allhigh performance industrial dehumidifiersemploy desiccant wheel technology. Thissimple and effective technology was firstpioneered by Munters Corporation morethan 50 years ago, when HoneyCombedehumidifiers were first introduced. These rotors were developed by the worldfamous Swedish scientist, Carl Munters(the inventor of Styrofoam and foam rubber), in conjunction with the Americanfounder of Cargocaire, CommanderOliver Colvin.HoneyCombe rotor technology hassince been advanced greatly. Thanks todecades of Munters research and development, the users of Munters dehumidifierscan select from six desiccant formulations.Working closely with Munters engineers, customers now can optimize performancewhile minimizing operating expenses – nomatter what their application.More Than 100,000HoneyCombe Rotors In ServiceMunters industrial dehumidifiers, withpatented HoneyCombe rotors, havebecome interwoven into the fabric ofAmerican life. Today, a Munters dehumidifier protects the space shuttle beforelaunch, while another safeguards AirForce One while on the ground. Ourequipment prevents mold and mildewgrowth at the country’s largest breweries. It helps keep snack foods fresh andhelps make chocolate bars taste better.Millions of tablets, as well as other pharmaceutical preparations, could not meetFDA requirements without our equipment in the plant. Plastic bottles can bemade faster and at a lower cost thanksto Munters dehumidifiers. Clean roomsturn out state-of-the-art electronics, andbiotechnology makes new advances everyday using Munters equipment. Poultryand meat processors operate withoutcondensation, jet fighters fly more missions, and historic motion pictures arebeing preserved for posterity because ofMunters dehumidifiers. Munters’ continuing research and development effortsmean that thousands of other applications, as diverse as these, enjoy bothdependability and flexibility in meetingtheir humidity control needs. But nomatter what the application, complex orsimple, Munters dehumidification equipment serving it has HoneyCombe rotortechnology at its heart.American Made UnderISO 9001:2000 CertificationMunters makes all of the HoneyComberotors at its American manufacturing center in Amesbury, Massachusetts. UnderISO 9001:2000 certification, Munterscontinues to set the world’s standards forrotor production, and is the only producerof both desiccant wheels and dehumidifi-Worldwide, more than 100,000 Munters HoneyCombe rotors have been used over the past 50 years. From a broad range of manufacturing processes to the protection of America’s spaceshuttles, Munters dehumidifiers with Honeycombe rotors have been the equipment of choice.2

cation systems in the Americas. All Munters rotors are made of a nonmetallic, ceramic composite. They areengineered to provide superior strengthand durability, and be impervious towater. In fact, Munters rotors may bewashed with a hose without jeopardizingstructural integrity. (See Cleaning andMaintenance, page 7.)Munters wheels are characterizedby smooth, regular surfaces throughout the HoneyCombe structure, evendesiccant dispersion, and strong, accurately machined wheel casings. Munters’unique manufacturing processes assurethat the desiccant is an integral part ofthe HoneyCombe structure. In contrast, many competitive products have gaps between the media andthe casing, plugged or damaged media, surface damage, inferior welds, or usefillers to correct manufacturing flaws. These imperfections inhibit the performance of the dehumidifier and should beavoided when selecting a rotor.Unlike some competitive rotors, allstructural fibers are at least five micronsin diameter, and therefore not breathable. For added safety, HoneyCombe wheelsare designed not to emit smoke or to support fire if accidentally exposed to hightemperatures or flame. How a HoneyCombe RotorWorksThe operation of a HoneyCombe dehumidifier is based on the principle of sorption. Sorption is the adsorption or theabsorption process by which a desiccantremoves water vapor directly from the air. When the air to be dried passes throughthe HoneyCombe rotor, the desiccantremoves the water vapor directly from theair and holds it while the wheel rotates. As the moisture-laden desiccant passesthrough the reactivation sector, the watervapor is transferred to a heated air stream, which is exhausted to the outside. Theprocess is continuous, allowing for uninterrupted dehumidification.Munters HoneyCombe:A Truly Remarkable DesignMunters state-of-the-art rotor designsincorporate an advanced knowledge ofchemistry, thermodynamics, as well asmaterial technology.Throughout more than 50 years ofresearch and development, Munters hasobtained more than 25 patents in desiccant technology and has several morecurrently pending. As the industry leader, we offer more desiccant options thanany competitor. All of our desiccant formulations have been tested by both laboratory research and extensive “real time”applications throughout the world. All rotors manufactured by Muntersuse the same high-efficiency, mass transfer surface whose development has beenpioneered in thousands of demandingapplications. Our proprietary ceramicHoneyCombe structure provides an ideal, lightweight framework that assures optimum exposure of the desiccant to theair stream. This ensures highly efficientmoisture sorption within a small area, allowing a compact dehumidifier design.Drying performance is not simplyElectron microscope photography shows Munters’ uniformdiameter extruded glass fibers (top photo). These fibers, ofgreater than five microns in size, preclude breathability andassociated health hazards. Note a competitor’s structure(bottom photo) using random diameter, spun Kaolin fibers.Magnification of both photos is 200x.dependent on the rotor design and desiccant formulation. It also relates to howthe wheel functions together with theother components of the dehumidifier.Worldwide, more than 100,000 Muntersrotors have been in service during thepast 50 years. Careful monitoring of thisvast on-site customer group, along withcontinuous laboratory testing, has led todehumidifier advancements only availablein Munters equipment.3

Desiccant OptionsIn order to meet our customers’ varying performance requirements,Munters offers a choice of six desiccant wheels – Titanium silica gel, lithiumchloride, GTR, HPX, HCR and molecular sieve. For more than 50 years,Munters has conducted extensive research and development to improvethe desiccant wheel. Munters six desiccant options provide the widestrange of dehumidification available in the market today. All Munters wheelsare backed by a five-year warranty. Your Munters sales engineer is uniquelyqualified to recommend the best choice for your specific application.Titanium Silica GelLithium ChlorideGTRTitanium silica gel is anadsorbent. Water is attractedand held to the walls ofmany fine pores within thematerial. Munters has developeda patented method for manufacturing titanium silica gel in HoneyCombe wheel form, which results in a strong and stable structure, yielding ideal drying performance in awide range of applications.Advantages:; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYTitanium silica gel can hold up to 40% ofits dry weight in water when in equilibrium with air at saturation.; NON-OVERLOADING DESICCANTBecause titanium silica gel is a solid, insoluble desiccant, it is not possible to“wash out” the desiccant from the wheel. This means no special precautions arerequired even when it is exposed to air at100% relative humidity.; STABILITYSilica gel does not undergo any chemicalor physical change during the adsorptionprocess. It is inert, stable, and non-toxic.; WASHABILITYThe permanent nature of the desiccantmakes it possible to literally wash awheel in water if dust or other particulateblock the air passageways.; CHEMICAL RESISTANCETitanium silica gel is a stable materialand is resistant to most chemicals. Inparticular, it is resistant to acids andsulfur products which may be found inthe combustion products of a directfired gas burner.Lithium chloride is an extremelypowerful absorbent thattakes full advantage of theHoneyCombe, resulting in themost economical system on anoperating cost basis.Advantages:; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYLithium chloride can attract and holdover ten times its weight in water and isone of the most hygroscopic compoundsin existence. It has the best moistureremoval capacity over the broadestrange of inlet air conditions.; BACTERIOSTATICThe bacteriostatic properties of lithiumchloride can significantly reduce thenumber of organisms which may be carried in the air stream.; STABILITYAs a salt having very stable chemicalqualities, lithium chloride is not dependent on a pore system for its waterabsorption capability. Lithium chloride isunaffected by most air stream pollutantsand resistant to many contaminants likepetroleum vapor, solvents and phenols.; EFFICIENCYThe ability of the lithium chloride to bothabsorb and release large amounts ofwater from a small amount of desiccantcreates a tremendous drying capacity. Thus for each unit of energy input, agreater percentage goes to the usefulwork of removing water rather than heating and cooling the structure.Munters proprietary GTR wheelis an adsorbent that outperforms standard desiccants byas much as 60%. The GTR isespecially effective in applicationsthat utilize 100% outside air.Advantages:; UNIQUE STRUCTUREThe GTR desiccant is specially formulated to achieve performance on warm, moist airstreams that is not achievablewith other desiccant formulas.; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYThe GTR desiccant provides exceptionalmoisture removal without the requirement of pre-cooling. The GTR desiccantwheel can remove as much as 100 gr/lbof moisture from an untreated airstream.; NON-OVERLOADING DESICCANTBecause GTR is a solid, insoluble desiccant, it is not possible to “wash out” thedesiccant from the wheel. This meansno special precautions are required evenwhen it is exposed to air at 100% relativehumidity.; STABILITYThe GTR desiccant does not undergoany chemical or physical change duringthe adsorption process.; WASHABILITYThe permanent nature of the desiccantmakes it possible to literally wash awheel in water if dust or other particulateblock the air passageways.4

HPXHCRMolecular SieveMunters unique HPX wheelis an adsorbent that providesvery low dew points (-70 F andlower). This desiccant is usedunder the advice of a Muntersengineer for specialty applications.Advantages:; APPLICATIONThe HPX desiccant is used for manufacturing spaces and processes that requireextremely low humidity levels. Forexample, HPX desiccant rotors are usedto maintain manufacturing environmentsbetween 1% and 2% relative humidityat 70 F for the production of lithium batteries.; UNIQUE STRUCTUREThe HPX desiccant provides high performance drying under specific conditionsthat cannot be reached with standarddesiccant formulas.; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYThe HPX desiccant was designed for lowdewpoint applications by engineeringthe desiccant pore system to maximizewater pickup and efficiency.; STABILITYThe HPX desiccant does not undergoany chemical or physical change duringthe adsorption process.; WASHABILITYThe permanent nature of the desiccantmakes it possible to literally wash thewheel in water if dry dust or other particulate block the air passageways.Munters proprietary HCR wheelis an adsorbent wheel thatis designed to use low temperature air for reactivation. Thewheel is standard in Munters HCUdehumidifiers. HCU dehumidifiersuse refrigeration waste heat for desiccantreactivation.Advantages:; APPLICATIONThe HCR desiccant is specially formulated to use low temperature reactivationair. It is typically partnered with a refrigeration system that provides cooling, dehumidification and the heat required toreactivate the desiccant.; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYWhen combined with refrigeration, theHCR rotor can remove as much as 120gr/lb of moisture from an airstream. Useof refrigeration waste heat for reactivationresults in an extremely energyefficient desiccant system.; NON-OVERLOADING DESICCANTBecause HCR is a solid, insoluble desiccant, it is not possible to “wash out” thedesiccant from the wheel. This meansno special precautions are required evenwhen it is exposed to air at 100% relativehumidity.; STABILITYThe HCR desiccant does not undergoany physical or chemical change duringthe adsorption process.; WASHABILITYThe permanent nature of the desiccantmakes it possible to literally wash thewheel in water if dry dust or other particulate block the air passageways.Molecular sieve is a solidadsorbent for reachingextremely low dew points(-40 F to -80 F). It is efficientat high temperatures and is notsensitive to microporic clogging bypollutants.Advantages:; ZEOLITIC STRUCTUREA zeolitic molecular sieve is a crystallinematerial of aluminum silicate which iscapable of separating molecules of different sizes. Small molecules, such aswater molecules, are adsorbed, whilelarge molecules pass through the wheel.; MOISTURE REMOVAL CAPACITYBecause water molecules are polar andthe molecular sieve has a high surfaceenergy, water molecules adsorb at lowwater vapor pressures. As a result, molecular sieve materials are suitablefor applications that require a very lowlevel of humidity. For the same reason, the molecular sieve has a better sorption capacity at higher temperatures thanother sorbents.; STABILITYMolecular sieve does not undergo anychemical or physical change during theadsorption process. Molecular sieve isinert, stable and non-toxic.; WASHABLITYThe permanent nature of the desiccantmakes it possible to literally wash thewheel in water if dry dust or other particulate block the air passageways.5

Munters Innovations in TechnologyMunters invests significantly in the research and development of newtechnologies in order to provide its customers with the most recentadvancements within the desiccant dehumidification field. A dedicatedresearch and development team has allowed Munters to continuouslyoffer new and innovative solutions to their customers. Muntersmost recent developments focus on energy efficiency and reducedenvironmental impact.PowerPurge PowerPurge is a third recirculating airstream within a desiccant dehumidifier that is used to reduce energy requirements and improve desiccant performance. PowerPurge reduces energyrequirements in two ways. The unique patented PowerPurge acts as an energy recovery system, collecting waste heat off of the hottest section of the desiccant wheeland using it to help with the regeneration. This reduces the energyrequired for reactivation while also reducing the discharge temperatureof the process air, resulting in lower energy costs for post cooling.PowerPurge can also save on first cost. Equipping a desiccant system with PowerPurge can reduce the size of the desiccant rotor withoutdiminishing the dehumidification capacity while still seeing a savings inenergy costs. PowerPurge is available in Munters Integrated Custom AirHandling (ICA) products. The ICA is Munters’ double wall, no throughmetal custom air handling product line.Humidity Control Unit (HCU)Conventional air conditioning systems reduce humidity under ideal conditions. Traditional A/C system design assumesthe cooling process will remove any moisture needed to control humidity. They are not designed to control humidity ascircumstances vary within the building or as temperatures rise and fall outside. Additionally, recent increases in make-upair requirements have changed sensible heat ratios to levels where these systems operate poorly. When fresh air is bothcool and humid, cooling coils may not operate because the sensibleheat load is low.Munters Humidity Control Unit (HCU) provides operators the ability to independently control temperature and humidity. The HCU isdesigned to treat 100% make-up air and works in conjunction withyour existing A/C system, air handling unit or energy recovery ventilator (ERV). It controls humidity on an as needed basis, when humiditylevels exceed set point, and is controlled independently of temperature.Munters HCU cost effectively eliminates humidity from building make-up air. Unlike systems that first cool the air to lower thehumidity then reheat the air to create the desired temperature,Munters HCU removes humidity using both refrigeration and a desiccant rotor. The desiccant rotor is regenerated using recycled heat from the unit’s cooling components, providing dry airto the A/C system at a low operating cost. The end result is a unit that controls humidity with a COP that is up to 65%higher than a typical air conditioning system.COMPRESSORDESICCANT WHEELCONDENSERCOILCOOLINGCOILDRIVE MOTOR6
