2015 Safety Employees of theYearJohn Krueger, who represents the BLETTransportation:Transportation’s Safety Employee of the Year (SEOY) is not oneperson but a group — the safety coordinator team of 36. Threeemployees were selected to represent that team at the Employeesof the Year ceremony:Central Region:Rick Batten, Yardmaster/Yardmaster Central Region Safety Coordinator*South Region:John Krueger, Engineer/BLET Kansas Division Safety Coordinator*North Region:(Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers andTrainmen) for the Kansas Division on the SouthRegion, strongly believes that training is a keyto reducing injuries – from safety marathons, toEnhanced Safety Training to Approaching Others.Like other safety coordinators, he helps facilitatetraining across his division. He is also a proponent of SIRP (SafetyIssue Resolution Process), a tool to report workplace risks andfind solutions. In addition, John serves as co-chair for the laborcaucus, representing BLET for the safety coordinators.Brent Michel, Conductor/SMART-TD Montana Division Safety Coordinator*For well over a decade at BNSF, we’ve had a team of safetycoordinators, jointly chosen by their unions and management, who are deeply focused on reducing risk and creating asafer workplace. These safety coordinators are conductors, switchmen, engineers and yardmasters who represent andsupport safety initiatives for their respective crafts, divisionsand regions. They have played a crucial role in building a safetyculture of commitment. All three of the safety coordinators who are with us tonight —Brent Michel, Rick Batten and John Krueger — started theirrailroad careers in the 1970s. All three celebrate the great stridesBNSF has made in safety since that time. They remember atime in the 1980s when a frequency ratio of 2.5 represented anexceptional team achievement. Today, the target for BNSF overallis .90, and many teams meet and exceed that safety target. In fact, as one of many indicators of their safety commitment,Brent, Rick and John collaborated to write and produce a “Gap isthe Map” video to raise awareness about key practices that canhelp prevent derailments. We are proud of these three, just as we are proud of all of oursafety coordinators, who are playing a fundamental role inbuilding a culture that is focused on “safety with” employees andachieving the path to zero injuries and incidents. As safety coordinator representing all theyardmasters across the Central Region,Rick Batten is credited with identifying an alertsystem that notifies yardmasters when lightningis within a 5-mile radius, giving crews plenty oftime to seek shelter. He worked with Telecom toensure an all-call emergency channel was builtinto the new yard radio software, giving yardmasters a one-buttonsolution to inform employees of an emergency, no matter whichfrequency they’re working. Rick also has helped shape a traincrew checklist to help reduce and eliminate authority violations. Thanks as well to the other 33 safety coordinators who aremaking a difference at BNSF:Jeff Boatman†Michael BransonJohnny Butler Jr.Roger CaddenTerrance CarlsonTessa CollinsDarin DenisarPatrick EngebrechtGreg GordleyRoy HelmKevin HowardJimmy HymesMark Johnson†Charles JonesRobert KolbMichael LaCrue†Brad MerrimanDonald MitchellW. Today as a safety coordinatorfor the SMART-TD (Sheet Metal Air RailTransportation-Transportation Division) employeeson the Montana Division, he works with site safety teams, whichprovide a wealth of ideas and are a great way to keep peopleengaged. He’s also very involved in supporting the BAPP teamsacross the North Region.Engineering:Jeff Ahmann, Section Foreman, Flagstaff, Ariz.*Jeff Ahmann is frequently chosen to deliversafety training to new hires and managementtrainees, thanks to his candor and ability to bepositive and reinforcing when he’s deliveringa safety message. He is meticulous in allaspects of his work, from planning the day’swork, to leading safety briefings, to maintaininghis company vehicle. Because of his professionalism anddemonstrated leadership abilities, Jeff was also asked toco-facilitate Approaching Others About Safety training forthe Southwest Division’s Engineering team.Intermodal Business Unit Operations:Kevin Beville, Intermodal Equipment Operator, Memphis, Tenn.*Kyle Carosella, Working Labor Foreman, Hauser, Idaho, Fueling Depot*An active member of the local safety committee,Kyle Carosella is respected by peers andsupervisors for his willingness to find solutions, chiefly through open and honest communication. He’s helped resolve issues promptly, such asimproving the process for distributing personalprotective equipment. Kyle supports the facility’ssafety training and has been a big part of updating job safetyanalyses, then using his off-duty time to cover these subjects withpeers working other shifts.Telecommunications:Eric Henry, Maintainer Foreman, Oklahoma City, Okla.*Among the many training programs Eric Henryhas helped support is fall protection, especiallyimportant for Telecom crews that regularly mustscale radio and microwave towers. Eric wasintroduced to this training on the second dayof the job and was so impressed he asked tobe involved. Since then he has helped developbucket truck rescue training and is now working with a Telecomteam to create rescue equipment training that will be providedquarterly as well as annually. He has also helped institutequalification climbs for new employees.Kevin Beville is the BAPP facilitator atMemphis, the first intermodal facility to adopt theprogram. An employee-driven process, BAPP focuses on eliminating injuries by reducingrisk to exposure. Trained employees observecoworkers’ activities against a defined list ofbehaviors, with a focus on providing positivereinforcement for safe behaviors. After launching the processat Memphis, Kevin helped the employees at the Seattle andChicago facilities get their programs underway. He also serveson the Memphis Leadership Advisory Team, a joint managementemployee council.* - ATTENDING CEREMONY
