our timeline.How It Began1973 23-year-old Graham‘Skroo’ Turner lands inthe UK for the ‘mustdo’ Australian thing ofseeing Europe and getsjob as a vet, which iswhat he had trained todo. Skroo gets bored ofbeing a vet and goesinto partnership withhis vet friend Geoff‘Spy’ Lomas. They buy adouble-decker bus forrunning tours to Europefor Aussie mates. Top Deck Travel makes aprofit of 15,000 and isrunning successful toursto different Europeanlocations. 5000 passengerscarried produces annualturnover of 5 million. Top Deck introducessix-month London toSydney tours, a first forany overland company.

19951982Mar Skroo and some of theother directors fromTop Deck Travel decideto set up a travel agencyin Sydney based onthe discounted airfaresmodel he had seenwhile in London. It wasdecided to focus on theFlight Centre modelrather than the blood,sweat and tears businessof running bus tours inEurope. Flight Centre Limitedis incorporated and thefirst Flight Centre storeis opened.19881987 Flight Centre has 30stores and the companyimplements standardnames, logos, uniformsand systems and storesbranded to stand outlike (as Skroo put it)‘dog’s balls’. They are allpainted fire engine red. The Flight Centre‘Captain’ is born andan airline pilot is usedfor the first time in thecompany’s advertising. Throughout the yearsthe ‘Captain’ was usuallyan actor but in 2004for the first time hewas a real-life pilotworking for Eva Air, theTaiwanese airline.1990 Flight Centre has80 shops in Australiaand New Zealand.1993 Corporate Travellerestablished in Australia Gary ‘Boxer’ Hogan isappointed to lead FlightCentre’s UK operation.He and colleague MandyJohnson rent a house andstart looking for suitablestore locations andsetting up deals with keytravel organisations.
