Page 8 - Fairview Town News May 2017 www.fairviewtexas.orgpools, birdbaths, pet dishes, empty pots and planters, clogged raingutters, etc. Mosquitoes only need a few inches of standing waterto breed. Also, keep mosquitoes out of your home by repairing orinstalling window and door screens; and DETERRENT: Use insect repellant containing DEET or otherproven deterrents on your outer clothing and exposed skin (neverskin under clothing). These products are safe when used accordingto their directions. They help keep mosquitoes and other insectslike ticks away! Also, utilize mosquito-deterring plants in youryard such as marigolds or lavender.MosquitoPreparednessPreventative actions taken at the individual level will go a long wayin combating the potential for exposure to the virus. Everyone shouldlook for places around their home or business that contain standingwater and drain them. A few examples of places where standingwater can occur are:As we begin to transition into the warm conditions that come withsummer and invite fun outdoor activities, we should all be thinkingearly about steps that can be taken to protect against West Nile virus(WNV), Zika virus disease (Zika) and Chikungunya virus.Local municipalities as well as Collin, Dallas and Denton countieswork together to share data as well as best practices and that seems tobe working well in fighting mosquitos. As in past years, the Town hascontracted with Municipal Mosquito to perform trapping and testingevery week. They will also be proactively applying larvacide whereneeded. You can better protect yourself and your family by following theFour Ds*: DUSK/DAWN: Stay indoors during evening to early morninghours-from about 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. This is when mosquitoes aremost active and hungry; DRESS: In long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Clothes arethat magic barrier to keep mosquitoes from finding skin to bite; DUMP & DEFEND: Get rid of any water outside that has beenstanding for more than three days, including stagnant swimming Playground equipment can collect water after rain showers orafter watering the lawn. Lawn furniture and equipment can easily accumulate water. Gutter downspouts can cause water to accumulate on the groundunderneath. Splash guards can be utilized to better disperse waterand prevent collection. Stacks of aged wood can hold water and become a breedingground for mosquitoes. Discarding old wood and keeping newwood in dry locations is ideal. Buckets and other items commonly found in the back of truckbeds can collect water and should be dumped out regularly. Boats contain many places where water can accumulate; keepboats drained and covered. Avoid overwatering plants and drain drip trays, if necessary. The preventative measures provided above are just some of waysindividuals can actively combat disease. The Town encourages allresidents and local business owners to assess and monitor theirproperties on a regular basis and to take appropriate actions so thatany potential hazards can be eliminated before they become a realthreat to public health.*Source: Collin County Health Care Service, http://www.collincountytx.gov/healthcare services/Pages/west nile.aspxSPRINGSPECIALDr. Gary Raiczykwww.angelparkwaypethospital.comBoard your pet forat least three nightsand the fourth nightis on us!214-383-5000ghtsMain St.S.
