Tulsa has the smallest FBS enrollment with 3,406 students, while New Mexicohas an enrollment of 27,353 students. Tulsa averages 47.0 points per game, while New Mexico scores at a 26.7 clip. Tulsa ranks 3rd nationally for rushing at 363.7 yards per game, while the NewMexico defense ranks 7th against the run, only giving up 78.0 yards. The two teams are nearly identical in passing yardage, as Tulsa averages 185.3yards per game and New Mexico 185 yards.THE TULSA-NEW MEXICO SERIES . . . This is the 8th meeting between Tulsa and New Mexico, as the GoldenHurricane lead the series 5-2. Tulsa has won the last three games, including the last time the teams met inAlbuquerque in 2015 with a 40-21 Tulsa win. Tulsa is 2-1 at home against New Mexico, winning the first game in 1989, 35-33,losing the next game in 1996, 34-23, and then defeating the Lobos in 2008 by ascore of 56-14. 2017 Tulsa Football Game Notes page 2PHILIP MONTGOMERY IN THIRD SEASON LEADINGTULSA FOOTBALL PROGRAM . . . Philip Montgomery is in his third season with a 17-12 overall head coachingrecord with the Hurricane. Montgomery completed his second season in 2016 leading the Tulsa footballprogram to a 10-3 record. He became the 29th head coach in school history on Dec. 11, 2014. Montgomery claimed his first career head coaching victory in the 2015 Tulsaseason opener with a 47-44 overtime win over FAU. In his first year, Montgomery led Tulsa to six wins and to the 2015 Camping WorldIndependence Bowl. Montgomery is the fourth coach in school history to take his first two teams to aBowl game, and has coached 11 teams to bowl games in his 14 years as a coach. He became the fifth Tulsa head coach to lead his first team to a bowl game. Before coming to Tulsa, he spent seven years at Baylor, where he spent the finalthree seasons as the offensive coordinator/QB coach. Under his guidance, Baylor led the nation in total offense and scoring offense ineach of his final two seasons. Before moving to Baylor, he spent five years at Houston, also under Art Briles. Before moving to the college ranks, he was the offensive coordinator for one yearat Denton (Texas) HS before that spent six years at Stephenville HS, wherehe was a part of back-to-back Class 4A state titles in 1998 and 1999.FIRSTS . . . Eleven freshmen have seen their first collegiate playing time this season, including5 true freshmen,including one walk-on, and 6 red-shirt freshmen. Four players made their first career start in the season opener – QB ChadPresident, WR Josh Stewart, DT Shemarr Robinson and DB Manny Bunch. In the third game at Toledo, true freshman defensive tackle Garrett Flanary madehis first career start. It took true freshman Shamari Brooks only 3 games to have his first career 100-yardrushing game he had 141 yards and 3 TDs at Toledo in a reserve role. Reserve RB Corey Taylor II, who gained only 4 yards on 5 carries as a truefreshman in 2016, had his first career 100 rushing game with 111 yards for a 5.6average in the opener at Oklahoma State.OFFENSIVELY IN THE MONTGOMERY ERA . . . In 28 games under Philip Montgomery, Tulsa has scored over 40 points 19times and has posted a 15-4 record when doing so. Tulsa came into the 2017 season averaging 39.8 points over the previous twoyears, including 37.2 points in 2015 and 42.5 points in 2016. Tulsa has gone over 500 yards of total offense in 19 games under Montgomery. The Golden Hurricane has gone over 600 yards 7 times under Montgomery. Tulsa has had 10 300 yard rushing games in the Montgomery era, with eightcoming in 2016 and two this season. Tulsa has had two 400 rushing games under Montgomery, both coming in back-toback games this year. In the Montgomery era, Tulsa has 99 offensive scoring drives out of 203possessions in regulation under two minutes, including 35 under one minute that's 49-percent of the time that Tulsa's offensive scoring drives have taken undertwo minutes. Tulsa has seven 50 scoring games in the last 17 games under Montgomery, datingback to the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl when Tulsa scored 52 points. The Hurricane had four 50 scoring games in 2016, the most since four 50 scoringgames in the 2010 season and before that 6 50 games in 2008.LOOK AT THESE NUMBERS . . . In the last two games, Tulsa has averaged 607.5 total yards (1,215), including 423.5yards (847) on the ground, and 58.5 points (117). In that two-week span, Tulsa and the opposition combined for 2,490 total yards,including 1,263 in the Louisiana game and 1,227 yards in the Toledo contest. Tulsa faces New Mexico in the 4th straight week for the Hurricane of facing a 2016Bowl team, following Oklahoma State, Louisiana and Toledo in the first 3 weeks. Tulsa is one of only five FBS programs to play all of its non-conference games in2017 against teams that played in a bowl game last season. The others are Louisiana-Monroe, Oklahoma State, Rice and UCLA. Only three of the five teams (ULM, Rice, Tulsa) have four non-conference games,while Oklahoma State and UCLA will play just three non-conference games. A total of nine Tulsa opponents this year made bowl appearances last season. Tulsa's 2017 opponents that made bowl appearances last year include: OklahomaState, Louisiana, Toledo, New Mexico and conference foes Navy, Houston,Memphis, USF and Temple.BIG FIRST-HALF DEFENSIVE PLAYS BY SENIOR SUITS . . . Senior linebacker Craig Suits had his 4th career interception and his second returnfor a touchdown at the 3:17 mark of the first quarter against Toledo when he pickedoff a Logan Woodside pass and raced 37 yards to put Tulsa ahead 21-7. Then at the 6:25 mark of the 2nd quarter, on a 4th-and-inches from the 41-yardline, Suits stopped Terry Swanson shy of the first down Tulsa's offense tookpossession at its own 42-yard line and five plays later scored for a 28-7 lead. Suits’ first career interception return for a TD came in the 2015 regular season finaleagainst Tulane with a 28-yard return that gave Tulsa the lead late in the game, acontest Tulsa needed to win to become bowl eligible.100-YARD RUSHING FOR FRESHMAN BROOKS . . . True freshman Shamari Brooks became the 14th freshman (true or red-shirt) to gain100 yards in a single game for the Golden Hurricane. Brooks gained 141 yards and 3 TDs on 18 carries against Toledo, which was thethird game of his career. His 100 game was the 22nd time in school history that a freshman had rushed forover 100 yards in a game, and the first time since 2015 when red-shirt freshmanRamadi Warren gained 139 yards against Cincinnati. Brooks' 141 rushing yards is the 9th best freshman rushing performance in schoolhistory.3 FOR 100, FIRST TIME IN OVER 30 YEARS . . . Tulsa running backs D’Angelo Brewer and Shamari Brooks and quarterback ChadPresident did something against Toledo that hadn’t happened in over 30 yards. Each player rushed for 100 yards in that game – Brewer had 152 yards, Brooks141 and President tallied 130 yards on the ground. The last time that feat was achieved came on Nov. 1, 1986 when running backsDerrick Ellison (177), Gill Johnson (177) and Kenneth Lee (106) each accomplishedthat feat against Wichita State.PRESIDENT GETTING COMFORTABLE . . . Entering the season opener against Oklahoma State, the starting quarterbackfor the Hurricane was unknown until Tulsa’s first possession when third-yearsophomore Chad President took the field. In three games, President has completed 44-of-75 passes for 546 yards and hasrushed for 214 yards, a 7.6 average and 4 TDs. In his first game as the starter, President completed 18-of-35 passes for 178 yards,and ran for another 69 yards on eight carries. In his second game, President completed 70-percent of his passes (14-of-20) for243 yards, while throwing his first career TD pass and running for his first career TD. In game No. 3, President became the first Tulsa quarterback to rush for 100 yards since Nov. 12, 2010 when G.J. Kinne had 190 yards rushing against Houston President rushed for 130 yards and 2 TDs against Toledo.AMONG THE TOP-10 IN THE AMERICAN . . . D'Angelo Brewer is ranked 2nd, Shamari Brooks 6th and Chad President 10thamong the top American Athletic Conference rushers this week. Brewer averages 149 yards per game, Brooks 85 yards and President 71.3. D’Angelo Brewer jumped from 9th place to 4th place on the school’s all-timerushing chart with his 262-yard rushing performance against Louisiana in thesecond game of the season. He came into that game with 2,433 career rushing yards and ended with 2,695career yards. A week later, he had 152 rushing yards vs. Toledo, but did not make a move upthe all-time list of rushers. Brewer now has 2,847 career yards and 18 touchdowns on 563 carries. Brewer is now 668 yards away from moving up any further on the career rushinglist Trey Watts (2010-13) is in third place with 3,515 yards.MORE ON BREWER'S 262-YARD PERFORMANCE, EARNSTHE AMERICAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS . . . D’Angelo Brewer became just the 5th Tulsa player to rush for over 200 yardstwice in a career, and it was just the 23rd time overall that Tulsa has had a 200yard rusher. He finished the Louisiana game with the 4th best rushing performance in schoolhistory with 262 yards on 38 attempts. Brewer’s first 200 rushing game came last year with 252 yards on 46 carries atFresno State. The 200-yard game this year was his 10th career game of 100 yards rushing. His three TDs against Louisiana was the most in his career. For his performance, Brewer was named the American Athletic Conference's coOffensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 9.BREWER'S LONG RUNS . . . Of all the yards and big plays that D’Angelo Brewer has made in his career, hisfirst touchdown run this season was his longest run of his career when heraced 50 yards for his first touchdown of the season in the first quarter againstLouisiana. Brewer bettered that run with a 60-yarder to the Louisiana 3-yard line in the finalminute of the first half that led to Tulsa going ahead 38-23. His previous long run was 48 yards against Virginia Tech in the 2016 CampingWorld Independence Bowl.SOPHOMORE DEFENDERS . . . Two 2-year sophomores, safety Manny Bunch and linebacker Cooper Edmiston,are in starting roles this year for the Hurricane after spending most of the 2016season playing special teams. The duo is tied for the team-lead in tackles with 25 apiece, and each has oneinterception. They each turned in their career-highs for tackles and each had their firstcareer interceptions against Louisiana Bunch had 13 stops to lead theHurricane, while Edmiston was one back with 12 tackles. Edmiston followed up that game with a 10-tackle performance at Toledo.600 AND 400 . . . Tulsa totaled 667 total yards on 92 plays against Louisiana for the most yards inthe Philip Montgomery era. It marked the seventh time in the last three seasons that Tulsa has gone over600 yards in total offense. It's also the 18th game in which Tulsa has gone over 500 yards in theMontgomery era. The Hurricane gained 424 yards rushing on 72 carries against Louisiana, whichwas the most rushing yards for Tulsa since gaining 439 yards against Ball Statein the GMAC Bowl at the end of the 2008 season. Tulsa put together its second straight 400 rushing game with 423 yards on 68carries at Toledo.

The last time Tulsa had a 400-yard rushing game was the same year that Tulsa hadtwo 400 rushing games that season, which came in 2008 when the Hurricane had 489yards vs. Tulane and 439 yards against Ball State in the GMAC Bowl. Senior placekicker Redford Jones came into the season with 239 points, needing 60points to tie for the school’s all-time scoring record. After scoring 27 points in the first three games (6 vs. Oklahoma State, 12 vs.Louisiana and 9 vs. Toledo), Jones is now only 33 points shy of the school record 299points. Jones now has 266 career points for a 5th-place tie with Stu Crum (1978-82) on theschool's all-time scoring list. His 41 career field goals ranks 7th on Tulsa's all-time chart for field goals made, as hetrails the all-time leader, Jason Staurovsky (53 FGs, 1981, '83-85) by 12 field goals.2017 WATCH LISTSINTERCEPTIONS TURN THE TIDE . . . On back-to-back Louisiana possessions in the second half, Tulsa sophomoredefenders intercepted passes that stopped Ragin’ Cajun drives. Manny Bunch intercepted a pass at the Tulsa 5-yard line. On the Cajuns’ next possession, Cooper Edmiston intercepted a pass at theTulsa 27-yard line, which led to a Tulsa touchdown and a 45-35 lead . In his first game at STAR, Whitfield had a team-leading 10 tackles, includingthree stops for -9 yards all 10 of his tackles were solos. The 10 tackles was a career-high for Whitfield, surpassing his previous-high of 8stops from a year ago. In three games. Whitfield has totaled 18 tackles, including 14 solos, 3 stops for -9yards and one PBU.FOUR ALL-CONFERENCE PLAYERS RETURN . . . Tulsa had 7 American Athletic Conference all-league selections as voted on by theconference coaches in 2016, and 4 of those returned to the Tulsa offense this year. Two running backs, one receiver and four offensive linemen earned all-conference accolades last year. Seven starters and 22 lettermen return from that offense. One of two Tulsa 1,000-yard rushers from last season return to the Tulsa roster inthe likes of D’Angelo Brewer, who gained 1,435 yards for a 119.6 average per game. The offensive line returns four of five starters from a unit that paved the way for aschool record eight 300 yard rushing games. Tulsa returns 1,000-yard career receiver Justin Hobbs for his junior season.WHAT RETURNED TO THE DEFENSE . . . The Tulsa defense returned 25 lettermen and six starters. In 2016, the Tulsa defense made great improvement, holding opponents to 10points and 110 yards less than the previous season. The end spot returned as the strength of the front seven as Jesse Brubaker andJeremy Smith were returning starters.
