Bill Tiberio,Conductor, UR Wind Symphony; Director, UR Jazz EnsembleBill Tiberio has been an instrumental music teacher for 31 years, 27 of them atFairport High School. At FHS he conducts the FHS Concert Band,Sophomore Band, two jazz ensembles, jazz combos, pit orchestra for musicals,and chamber woodwind ensembles. He also teaches woodwind lessons in thedistrict in grades 5 through 12. He holds a position with the Eastman School ofMusic Community Education Division, where he teaches in the high schoolsummer jazz program and founded the Eastman CED Chamber WindEnsemble, Jr. High School Jazz Ensemble, and Music Educators Jazz Ensemble.In the summer of 2013, he founded the ECMS-sponsored Music EducatorsWind Ensemble, and is directing it this school year. He has also been on thesummer staff at the Hochstein Music School as a director of a jazz camp and theTritone Fantasy Jazz Camp, a jazz program for adults. He is the past Presidentof the New York State Chapter of the International Association of JazzEducators, and has been an instructor in the IAJE Training Institute for jazzeducators.Bill was appointed in the Fall of 2004 to conduct the University of RochesterWind Symphony and in the Fall of 2008 to direct the UR Jazz Ensemble. In2009, he began teaching one of the Ithaca College Jazz Lab Bands, and is now onthe faculty of the jazz department at IC. His current assignment includes twojazz lab bands.Bill is a frequent guest conductor for honor concert bands and jazz ensemblesthroughout New York State and has also conducted at SUNY Fredonia andLawrence University, Wisconsin. He has served as a clinician for the EastmanSchool of Music JazzFest and is an All-State woodwind adjudicator and bandpageant clinician. His Concert Band at FHS has received seven consecutive GoldWith Distinction awards in NYSSMA Level 6. In the Spring of 2013, Bill wasselected as one of 200 quarterfinalists out of 30,000 applicants in the first evernational Grammy Music Educator Awards.Other awards and honors include selection as the RPO Music Educator Awardin April, 2003, induction into the Fairport High School Alumni Wall of Fame in2003, the Class of 2001 Fairport High School yearbook dedication, selection asFairport High School Commencement Speaker, 1993; University of RochesterExcellence in Secondary Teaching Award, 1994; Downbeat Magazine awards forstudent jazz ensembles, 1995 and 1997; Fairport High School faculty-nominatedTeacher of the Year award, 1996, and a nomination for a Disney AmericanTeaching Award, 1999. Bill is active as a professional woodwind player in theRochester area. As a saxophonist, Bill performs with the Bill Tiberio Band,(www.billtiberioband.com), and the Bill Welch Band, (www.billwelchband.com)and his groups have each recorded professional CD’s. His own band’s latestCD, Thanksgiving, was released in July, 2014.
