SILENT AUCTION ITEMSNEEDEDFrom the ARS Website withDan Keil, Master RosarianCentral & Illininois/Indiana Districts Combined RoseShow and MeetingsSeptember 16, 2017 MISSOURI BOTANICALGARDENQuestion: What are the ten principles of rosepruningThank you for using our ARS Q&A!!!The major source of income for a districtmeeting/rose show is the Silent Auction. Pleaseconsider donating an item. At past auctions, themebaskets have been very popular. Examples: “Tasteof Italy” (Italian pasta, wine, marina sauce, pastabowl, bread); “Going to the Movies” (microwavepopcorn, colorful small bowls, DVD); “Cookingwith the Grandkids” ( small apron, cookbook withkid friendly recipes, measuring spoons & cups, spatula, sprinkles, cookie mix); ho-made jam andjelly; almost any home made bakery item(NOTICE A PATTERN OF FOOD? – grin). You can search You Tube on how to wrap thebasket. The main reason is to remove all the junk in thebush and leave 4 strong canes. Bushes get weakenedwith all this little growth that grows at the bottomof the bush. If you keep that out and focus on yourmain canes you will have a good bush.Pruning is to open the center of the bush to let lightin. During the season it gets crowded in there.Keep all crossing canes cut. Crossing canes are thecanes that go through the bush, rubbing on othercanesRemoving all diseased canes. Look at the cut youmake. Look at the inner bark. Is it creamy whitecolor? If not prune down until you see this creamywhite color. Think of you stem as a bundle ofdrinking straws. If one straw gets plugged or two ormore straws get plugged it affects everything abovethat area. I doubt you will have a bloom on thatcane.Items don’t necessarily need to be in a basket such ashand made items, rose bushes, pruners, loppers, fertilizer, etc.Bruce Davis has volunteered to co-ordinate donateditems. To determine space, he would appreciate ifyou’d notify him of your planned donation byAugust 15th; however, you may still bring itemsthe day of the convention without priornotification.Cut low instead of high. The new growth willsupport a big bloom. If you cut high the growth isnot as strong. When the growth is coming onp you decide if youwant a spray or a single bloom. If you want a spray, remove the lead bud. If you want a single bloomremove all the side growth!!His contact info:Bruce Davis 618-910-4547davisbh2000@yahoo.com – “SILENT AUCTION”IN SUBJECT LINE (like many of us, if he doesn’trecognize the sender, he won’t open the email)During the season, prune to remove any dangerousbranches sticking out. During the season every timeyou cut a bloom, you are pruning the plant. Cutdown to the second 5th leaflet. Just above the areawhere the leaf joins the stem. The new growth willcome out there.Do not be afraid to prune, you will not hurt theplant. It's when you don't prune that causes4

problems.Wear safety glasses when pruning, rose canes will takean eye out. I got scratched in the eye once when Iwas pruning a Climber. I thought I cut that cane, Ididn't! OUCH!!! Also wear good goatskin gloves.Protect you hands!!Enjoy your roses!Question: I have a red rose climbing rose bush.Last year it bloomed very nicely and that was theend, only one bloom the whole summer. My rosebush just finished blooming and the roses aredying. Should I deadhead the roses, would thatmaybe be the reason the bush did not re-bloomlast year?Roses in ReviewJim and Kaye WessbecherIllinois/Indiana Roses in Review CoordinatorsYears ago a red Climber came out on the marketcalled Paul's Scarlet Climber. It bloomed heavily . Itwas a once a year bloomer, like some Old GardenRoses. It was such a great red Climber, that a breederput ever blooming genes into that rose and came outwith Blaze Climber, Now it bloomed all year. Now, your rose. If you had Blaze, it would send outnew growth, and re-bloom. You said that you onlyhad one bloom period last year. You have Paul'sScarlet Climber.Just go ahead and clip off the spent blooms. ThisFall, do not cut the rose back. The rose blooms onlast years growth. The 2017 Roses in Review information will beincluded in the July/ August edition of the AmericanRose magazine. Please take some time to check the list of roses to bereviewed this year and make some notes about anythat you might be growing. Then be sure to fill outthe online form or mail in your results. The onlineform will be available July 1st, however results are notdue until Sept. 26th. This is a great way to shareinformation about how newer varieties thathave been marketed in the last two to four yearsperform in our area. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at:So if the bush is cut back, it will not bloom!!!jkwessbecher@gmail.comNow you have some history as well as what is goingon with your rose!!Thanks so much for your help.Have fun growing roses!!Rosa Mundi5
