Pastorsand priests headed the schools; the religious of the parish taught the classes; the childrenof the parish filled the seats. The Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Newark were nodifferent, and for generations this model led to thriving and successful schools. Today, however, a rising number of laity in leadership positions and the dissolution of the parishmodel in many neighborhoods call for a re-evaluation of existing governance models. An6

innovative approach was taken to ensure the continued success and sustainability ofCatholic education. Under Lighting the Way, our school will be guided by a partnershipamong the Principal, the School Advisory Board, Pastor and the Archdiocesan CatholicEducation Services (ACES). The Archdiocesan model was a bold new direction ingovernance and leadership. It relies more heavily on local lay leaders to ensure the fiscalsuccesses of every school. At the same time it maintains a commitment to the highestacademic standards, and a strict adherence to sound Catholic Identity. The new model forCatholic schools in the Archdiocese of Newark is a “Call to the laity.” It is always mindful ofthe authority and teachings of the Church, and at the same time it provides an opportunityfor the laity’s greater involvement in the school’s Strategic Planning, Finance, Facilities, andMarketing and Development activities. The purpose of the School Advisory Board is toassist the Principal in the above mentioned areas.AccreditationThe school abides by all state laws and regulations that apply to it Queen of PeaceGrammar School is accredited by the Middle States Association Commissions onElementary and Secondary Schools.HistoryQueen of Peace Grammar School was established on September 9, 1925 due to thegenius and dedication of its visionary first pastor, Monsignor Peter B. O’Connor. TheSisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia were its first staff members. The wordsfrom former pastor, Rev. Msgr. Thomas J. Tuohy, embody the foundation of Queen ofPeace Grammar School. “God can give us nothing more precious than the gifts ofchildren. Austin's 2012 Viewpoint in this Journal, "'The Queen of the South' is 'the Queen of Egypt'"3 r e t f heae ( r QSQE) is that the Queen of Sheba was a queen of both Egypt and Ethiopia.
