SCHOOL UPDATE: San Marcos High SchoolTeacher Chris Geldert goes the extra mile to make sure that his students are exposed to as many learning opportunities as possible. That is why he encourages his students to participate in the SkillsUSAprogram. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving middle school, high school and collegestudents who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. SkillsUSA is apartnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. What a great idea!SkillsUSA is an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high-performance workers in publiccareer and technical programs. They provide quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. They build and reinforce self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills.SkillsUSA also runs competitions in which students compete in a variety of occupational skill areas. Competitions begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. On Saturday, February 1, six SMHS students participated in the Region 6 Competition at Riverside Community College.SkillsUSA Region 6 encompasses the counties of Mono, Orange, Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial and San Diego. This was the third year that SMHS has participated in the SkillsUSA competitions.Seniors Carston Wellong and Angel Casarez participated in the Carpentry Competition, in which contestants frame walls using wood and/or steel studs, cut and install rafters, gable end overhangs, fasciaboard and soffit installation, install sheathing and/or exterior siding and trim. Demonstration ofknowledge of stair construction is required. Contestants are judged on accuracy, ability to read and interpret blueprints, workmanship, safety and the proper use of tools, equipment and materials. This wasthe first time that SMHS has competed in this event, and Carston and Angel represented SMHS well.Senior Jordan Moote, and Juniors Michael Trosak and Cole Leach participated in the Cabinet MakingCompetition in which contestants build a small cabinet from the materials and drawings supplied. Contestants are expected to read the drawings, lay out and cut the parts using a table saw, laminate trimmer, hand drill, hinge boring machine and various hand tools. The parts must be accurately assembled, sanded and adjusted to tolerances specified by the judges. This was the third year that SMHS competed inthis event. Jordan, Michael and Cole did great, as expected!Like any competitive team, we have a pipeline of ‘rookies’ to make sure that we remain competitive. Thisyear Ninth Grader Josh Moote participated in the Introductory Woodworking Competition. Our team took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Cabinet Making Competition, 1st in Introductory Woodworking, and 5th in the Carpentry Competition. Five of our students advanced to the State Competitionin Ontario on April 16th – 19th. Go Knights!Chris Geldert, Josh Moote, Jordan Moote, Angel Casarez,Michael Trosak, Carston Wellong & Cole Leach.Page 3Cabinet Making Team: ColeLeach, Josh Moote & Michael

Zak Zapara of Zapara & Sons came out toshow our students how the pros do it. Rick Hoehn stopped by to talk with Chris Geldert and MikeMcSweeney about the plan for the rough plumbing installation.Looking Good!Page 4

PARTNERS: Palomar CollegePalomar College is a public, two-year community college located in San Marcos, California. With an enrollment of approximately 30,000 full-time and part-timestudents, Palomar is the largest community college inSan Diego County. At Palomar, students may choosefrom over 200 associate degree and certificate programs, complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, or enjoy personal enrichment classes for lifelonglearning. As noted in our September 2019 Newsletter, the Warrior Village Project was born in a conference room at Palomar College in April 2018. Since then, we have explored ways for Palomar College to participate in theProject. I am happy to report that we have found a way- in fact three ways - to collaborate with Palomar. Students in the Departments of Architecture, Cabinet andFurniture Technology and Interior Design will beworking together to help the Warrior Village Project.Architecture students, Kiara Hiatt and Erik Schwartz, working under the direction of Professor Joseph Lucido, produced renderings of our cottages from Michael E.Joseph Lucido, Kiara Hiatt and Erik SchwartzRobinson’s architectural plans to illustrate different artalk about architecture at SMHS.chitectural treatments in different settings. When theinstallation sites are selected for our first two cottages, they will produce renderings of the cottages as they willappear in their final resting places. In a class taught by Brendan Mathews, owner of Foothill Cabinet Works, Jennifer Anderson’s Cabinet andFurniture Technology students will build the cabinets forour ‘galley’ kitchens, using lumber donated by TimberProducts Company and Saroyan Hardwoods and hardware donated by blum. Brendan and Chris Geldert aregraduates of Palomar College’s cabinet making program, recognized as one of the best in the country.Professor Jessica Newman’s Interior Design students,Melvin Hardy and Jennifer Ruder, will utilize their skillsto advise us on the interior design of our cottages usingfinish materials donated by Sherwin-Williams, Ferguson, Fan Diego, Classy Closets and Arizona Tile et al.Their challenge will be to take a variety of donated materials and make them look like they were meant to betogether. We have a lot of confidence in their creativeskills! The work of our Palomar partners will make a significant contribution to the Warrior Village Project. At thesame time, it will be a great experience for the students, providing them an opportunity to work in a collaborative,multi-disciplinary effort on a ‘real’ project. SPONSORSThe Warrior Village Project is a community effort. To succeed, we need financial support. We havebeen receiving a tremendous response to our pleas for help from individuals and businesses. Our cottages are being constructed in modules. When the modules are set on apermanent foundation, they will be bolted together along the ‘marriage line’ wherethe two modules come together: at the floor joists, at the end walls, and acrossthe top at the ridge beams. This requires large bolts that can withstand Californiaearthquakes. With four modules, and a marriage line length of about 70 feet foreach cottage, we need a lot of bolts. Our friends at Ababa Bolt gave us what weneeded. They gave us 80 5/8" x 5" bolts and 40 3/4" x 5" bolts, along with 120washers and nuts. That’s a lot of steel! The next time you are shopping for hard-to-find fasteners and custom parts, stopby one of Ababa’s stores in San Marcos or El Cajon and tell them THANK YOU fortheir support of our students and veterans.Stephanie Graham, Manager of the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & LightingGallery in Vista, was quick to say “Yes” when we asked her to supportthe Warrior Village Project and San Marcos High School by donatingplumbing fixtures for our cottages. She donated kitchen sinks and bathroom vanities. The sinks are top-of-the line, and the vanities are prettyfancy for our humble cottages. But, I have confidence that our InteriorDesign student partners at Palomar College will be able to make therest of our cottages look as good as the plumbing fixtures! The next time you are shopping for top-of-the line plumbing fixtures andappliances, stop by Stephanie’s store at 1725 Hacienda Drive in Vista andtell Stephanie “Thanks” for supporting our students and veterans. Most of the calls I receive are ’robocalls’, so I usually do not answer my phone if I do not recognize the caller. But, for some reason, when Greg Dettwiler called, I picked up the phone. I wasglad that I did. Greg’s company, G.J. Gardner, had just completed the construction of a new home in Fallbrook. They had 38sheets of exterior OSB sheathing left over. Our friend, Jason Harper of Pine Tree Lumber in Fallbrook, suggested that G.J. Gardner donate the sheathing to the Warrior Village Project. We are grateful to Greg Dettwiler and the G.J. Gardner for theirgenerous donation. And, we thank Jason for pointing Greg in thedirection of the Warrior Village Project! The de Jong family is well known in San Diego County.Their story is a classic tale of immigrants pursuing the American Dream, arriving from the Netherlands in the aftermath ofWorld War II with little more than a strong work ethic andboundless faith in their adopted country. The de Jongs havebeen instrumental in the development of North County. Virtually every child in San Diego grew up drinking milk from thefamily’s Hollandia Dairy. The de Longs are equally wellknown for their community spirit and generosity. This generosity was on display on 25 February when Arie De Jong presented two 10,000 checks to The San Marcos Promise forthe Warrior Village Project at San Marcos High School andthe Woodshop Program at Twin Oaks High School. Thankyou Arie for what you have done for our community!Page 6

DONATE TO THE WARRIOR VILLAGE PROJECTWe can provide truly affordable, permanent housing. But, we can’t do it for free. To succeed, weneed financial support. The materials required to build our cottages cost about 25,000 per cottage. The cost of installing a cottage as an Accessory Dwelling Unit will depend on the home site. But, itshould cost about 25,000 per cottage. Hence, we can provide permanent housing for a veteran or acouple for about 50,000. This is a bargain compared to the cost of other ‘affordable’ housing projects. “In 2016, it cost an average of 425,000 to build one unit of affordable housing in California, according to the Terner Center” (Los Angeles Times, April 16, 2018).Donors who wish to donate for the construction of our first two cottages can make a contribution through our fiscal sponsor, The San Marcos Promise onate), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
