When the firstbasket is full, a unique flowdiverter cartridge shifts flowto a second basket to permitremoval and cleaning with nointerruption to operations.One drain plug is on each sideof the housing. Additionally,an easy to access vent valveis in the cover. Standard footmounting pads ensure a rocksolid installation no matterwhere the strainer operates.Draining this chamber is easy;the cover lifts and swingsclear of the chamber openingwith no special tools required.The unique flow divertercartridge prevents fluid bypassinto the out-of-servicechamber. Eaton suppliesbaskets for simplex and duplexstrainers and screens for Ystrainers, in standard andheavy-duty designs. Standarddesign baskets meet theneeds of most applications.Eaton recommends the heavyduty design in cases whenstraining an extremely highviscosity material or experiencing a high solids load.Eaton baskets and screensare available in two standardmaterials: 316 stainless steelor MONEL . These materialscover nearly all corrosion resistance levels needed in strainerservices. A wide range ofperforations and meshprovides removal of solidsfrom 1/2" down to as low as40 microns. For special, uniqueapplications, Eaton customfabricates baskets from justabout any material to exactspecifications.Basket construction1/8" – Actual size1/4" – Actual sizeEach style basket includes aperforated sheet inductionwelded to a rigid top ring andsolid bottom cap. Specialattention to the welds alongthe perforated sheet seam,prevent the possible bypass ofsolids and maintain thebasket’s strength. A handle,welded to the I.D. of the topring, facilitates easy removal.Heavy-duty baskets havereinforcing strips inductionwelded along the perforation’sseam and circumferentially onthe outside of the mid-sectionof the basket. The perforatedsheet is inside the top ring andbottom cap.Screen constructionY strainer screens, rolled toform a cylinder, are inductionwelded along the seam. Aneat weld, applied along theperforated sheet seam,prevents the possible bypassof solids and provides a seamof acceptable strength. Eatonmachines Y strainer screenseats to specific dimensionsand, accordingly, both the O.D.and length of these screensare closely toleranced.Perforated sheet –specificationEaton baskets utilize perforated sheets because of theirgreater inherent strength andresistance to stress cracking.The percentage of open areaof a screen generally dictatesthe internal pressure dropexperienced across it. Theobjective is to select a perforation with the best balance ofopen area, hole arrangementand sheet thickness.factor in controlling the sheetthickness is the hole diameter.The smaller the hole diameter,the thinner the sheet. Eatonbaskets and screens havebetween 28% to 63% openarea with gauge thicknessfrom 18 (0.048 mm) to 25(0.021 mm), depending uponthe size of the perforationsand the size and model of thestrainer.Hole arrangementHoles can be punched either ina straight line or in a staggeredpattern. Eaton baskets andscreens have a staggeredpattern that increases theopen area, provides extrastrength and creates lesspressure drop.PerforationsEaton baskets and screens areavailable in 1/32", 3/64", 1/16",1/8", 5/32", 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"perforations and in mesh sizes20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 200, 325and 400. However, for generalservice there is one perforation for each size and type ofstrainer. Unless specified, thisstandard perforation is the sizefurnished with the strainer.Open areaPerforated sheets can have anopen area from 15% to 75%.In general, the larger the openarea of perforated sheet, thethinner the sheet thicknessmust be. Holes punched closertogether increase the perforated open area; the solidportion between holes distortsand becomes weak. Wire meshprovides smaller openings for very finestraining applications down to40 microns. Eaton baskets and screensuse monofilament mesh possessingequal wire size and wire count in bothdirections to produce square openings.Other types of mesh such as Dutch (orHollander) are also available. Dutchweave has a greater quantity of wiresin one direction and fewer wires of alarger diameter in the other direction.This creates a rectangular opening. Aswith perforated sheet, the best wiremesh selection is a balance of openarea, wire diameter and type of weave.reinforced with a perforated metalbacking possessing greater than a 60%open area. This combination affords thegreatest degree of strength, yet offersa lower pressure drop than other typesof wire mesh. In certain instances,such as Y strainer in steamapplications, the increased pressuredrop resulting from the use of a Dutchweave is not as critical as the retentionof small particles. Therefore, inapplications that involve steam, Eatonsuggests the use of weave such as the30 x 160 size that can withstand amuch higher differential pressurewithout bursting. Eaton can supplybaskets and screens with open areasfrom 14% to 46%Plain square weaveOpeningsStandard wire mesh liners for Eatonbaskets and screens are available from20 to 400 mesh. For any size mesh,there are different open area selectionsbased on the diameter of the wiresused. Twenty mesh means 20 wiresper inch in both a vertical and horizontaldirection. Therefore, as the wire sizeincreases, the hole size decreases.Eaton baskets offer wire mesh withopenings from 0.034" to 0.0015" (20mesh to 400 mesh).Open areaThe open area of wire mesh is afunction of both the weave and thewire diameter. Eaton uses a plainsquare weave in most cases becauseits straight-through flow path createsthe least pressure drop. The mesh isWoven in an over and under pattern ofwire having the same diameter, thisweave produces a square opening withexcellent flow characteristics.Plain dutch weaveWoven in an over and under pattern inone direction in which the horizontalwires are larger in diameter than thevertical wires, which are driven closeand crimped at each pass. This weaveproduces greater strength, but lowerflow rates, than a square weave.
