Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network2013 Annual ReportJuly 2014Dear EFPN Supporters and Volunteers,In 2013, the Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network (EFPN) celebrated its 30th birthday. In 1983, a number ofvisionary churches and individuals established a network of food pantries to serve those in need. Since then, we havegrown from five pantries to eight pantries plus additional programs such as BackPack Buddies and Mobile pantries. For many years, Jean Kellom oversaw the operation of EFPN, acting as its Executive Director. Jean retired a few yearsago, and it became apparent that we could not keep the organization moving forward without someone overseeing the dayto day operations. In 2013, the Board hired Kristina Garski as our first part time manager.2013 also marked the first full year at our new location, 503 S Saginaw Rd. Previously, the EFPN office resided in JeanKellom's house. In 2012, The Diaper Alliance, St John's Episcopal SAMS Pantry and EFPN decided to share space at thislocation. Besides an office, we gained an area to receive deliveries from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. In 2013, The Diaper Alliance outgrew their space. EFPN saw an opportunity to take over more space and start awarehouse. Appliances and shelving were funded by a grant from the Midland Area Community Foundation. Thewarehouse allows us to store food donations from various churches and organizations that are not designated for a specificpantry. We receive weekly deliveries of food from Hidden Harvest. Also, we can now order food items from the FoodBank that only come in large quantities and divide them among our smaller pantries. We hope to be able to handle agreater volume of produce that will come from Hidden Harvest and the Food Bank. Holy Family Episcopal Church starteda community garden last year to benefit EFPN. We also receive produce from the garden at Assumption of the BlessedVirgin Mary Parish. All eight pantries are benefiting from the warehouse and we have a number of volunteers working tomake the warehouse a success.During the last few years, we had transferred our accounting and bookkeeping tasks to an outside firm. To save money,we wanted to bring much of this process back in-house. With a lot of work by our treasurer, Linda Kaczmarek, and ourmanager, Kristina, this goal was achieved so more of your donated dollars goes to helping those in need.EFPN received 204,017 items of food and non-food items - donated, purchased from the Food Bank, or purchasedlocally. We distributed 206,744 items. This represents 17,245 items every month. This does not include items for theThanksgiving program, the Backpack Buddies program, and the Mobile Pantries. Through our regular program, we feed afamily of four for a week for approximately 108.00, including 20.00 in gift certificates with which they can purchaseperishable items. This is an amazing testament to the generosity of our supporters, the shopping skills and management offood by our pantry representatives, and the volunteers who work tirelessly to make us effective and efficient in helpingthose in need. The majority of households we assisted were headed by women. This reflects the poverty statistics forMidland County which indicate households headed by women experience a 33% poverty rate.EFPN provided approximately 700 children a weekly backpack of food at an average cost of 2.00 per backpack. Wecould not have done it without your monetary support and the help of volunteers from the Midland County Public Schoolsand the community who transported the food and packed approximately 22,400 backpacks. EFPN offered seven mobilepantries in 2013, serving a total of 4969 people. Each Mobile Pantry requires at least 65 volunteers. We partnered withHabitat for Humanity for three dedications, providing a basket and box of food to the new homeowners. We are very grateful to all of our supporters and volunteers who give very generously of their money and time. We couldnot do the work that we do without your support in food donations, money, and time. Our recipients are very grateful forall that you do. EFPN is honored that you have trusted us with your donations and time through all these years. Wethought this quote from Henry Ford sums up our past thirty years, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together isprogress, and working together is success." Together we are the Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Networkworking to fulfill our vision of “Always Food in Every Home.”Angela BuskePresidentKristina GarskiManager
