Western States “R” PanelInstallation, Flashings & Shop Drawing Detail GuideNotes to Designer and InstallersThe details contained in this guide are provenindustry details and are intended to be used asa design aid and installation guide. It does notdepict all situations that may be encounteredon all projects. Modifications are theresponsibility of the designer/ owner/ installer.Consideration should be given for Fit forPurpose, Building use, Climate conditions suchas temperature, snow, wind, and moisture,Governing Building Codes, and Maintenance. It is highly recommended that all trims andflashings be of the same material as the panels(metal, gauge, finish) to ensure long termperformance and durability. Where possible, flashing edges should be hemmed to strengthenthe edge and protect the cut edge fromexposure.Framing and Substrates“R “ panels are used over all type of substrateslike Steel Decking, open purlins, spacedsheathing, and wood decking such as plywood. Most details in this guide are shown with panelsattached to Purlins.Note on underlaymentNot all conditions require an underlayment,However metal roofing is susceptible toCondensation and it is recommended that anappropriate Roofing underlayment be use on allwood substrates to protect the structure duringinstallation. For added protection from rain andsnow, it is recommended to use rubberized Iceand water shield on eaves, valleys, and areas ofroof penetrations.Valley and Snow DesignValley design and dimension must be theproper width to accommodate high snow, rain, ice, and slope conditions. If possible, splices, penetrations, valleys, roof elevation changes, should be minimized in areas of high snow andice accumulations.Oil CanningOil canning is a condition common with flatmetal surfaces. This waviness is caused by steelmill tolerances, forming, variations in thestructures surfaces, and hardness of the steel.Measures are taken at the roll forming process, like profile design, steel gauge, correctiveleveling, to minimize the effects of oil canning.Oil Canning is a Characteristic of steel and cannot be eliminated totally and therefore is notreason for rejection of the panels.Job Site StorageWhile waiting to be installed on the job site,Storage of panels, trim crates, and flat sheetshould be sloped in order to allow for propermoisture run off. One end should be elevatedso as not to allow ponding of water on themetal surface. When using tarps for protection, proper ventilation should be provided toprevent condensation. Moisture orcondensation that is trapped inside a bundlecan lead to white rust on sheeting.ReferencesFor other installation techniques and details,The Sheet Metal and Air ConditioningContractors National Association Inc. (SMACNA)and NRCA manuals are great resources forworking with sheet metal.Technical AssistanceSlope RequirementsIt is recommended that “R” panels have aminimum slope requirement of 1:12 on allstructures.Contact your WSDI sales or technicalrepresentative for any additional information orassistance.1
Western States Metal Roofing “R” PanelInstallation, Flashings & Shop Drawing Detail GuideFastener Placement and SelectionNotes to Installers: Fastener Selection will vary depending on type and thickness of substrate.Space panel lap screws 12” minimum -24” O.C. maximum. Consult with design engineer.Spacing of fastener rows to be engineered by others. Lap panels away from prevailing winds whenever possible. The use of Butyl tape mastic is always recommended on the panel lap when used forroof panels.Panels and flashings should never be installed in contact with dissimilar metals.Use only those flashings and accessories designed for use with this panel.Panel attachment screws must be long enough to fully penetrate through roof decksubstrate or penetrate solid lumber at least one inch. Exposed Fasteners should havesealing washers and be coatedto provide protection againstcorrosion.Screws must be properly drivento ensure holding strength andproper seal. (see diagram)Recommended drill speed is2000rpm. Improper setting ofdrill speed can lead to snappingof screw heads.Pre drilling of screw holes maybe necessary with heavy gaugemetals.2

WSDI reserves the right to changedetails, discontinue products, change designs at anytime without incurring obligation. It is best to consultyour Design Engineer for recommendations.UnderlaymentThere are many types of underlayment’s on themarket today. All designed with a special purposedepending on the type of Metal and profile. Manydifferent types of metal will require a different typeof underlayment, such as A606-4 (Corten) whichrequires a High Temperature underlayment. It is bestto consult your Design Engineer forrecommendations.Valley and Snow DesignValley design and dimension must be the properwidth to accommodate high snow, rain, ice, andslope conditions. If possible, splices, penetrations, valleys, roof elevation changes, should be minimizedin areas of high snow and ice accumulations. Detailsfound in this manual may not pertain in areas of highsnow and ice accumulations.Panel Coverage and FasteningNormal panel width of “R” panel is 36”. Howeverdepending on the finish selected and the requiredcoil feed, it may be necessary for WSD to shorten thewidth of the panel. Please consult with your WSDIrepresentative for details and fasteningrecommendations.Safety and MaintenanceWalking on and installing any roof is dangerous!Extreme care should always be used when walkingon roofs. Safety should always be a top priority andapproved fall protection and equipment as approvedby OSHA should always be used.No roof is immune to severe weather or iscompletely maintenance free. To keep your roofperforming as it was designed; an inspection andcomprehensive maintenance program should beimplemented.ReferencesFor other installation techniques and details, TheSheet Metal and Air Conditioning ContractorsNational Association Inc.
