Product BrochureRTG Electrification

Making ports more sustainable with E-RTGsAs national andinternational legislativerequirements onenvironmental standardsin ports continue to betightened, the industry hasbeen intensifying effortsto operate more efficientlyand more sustainably.Given the integral role RTGsplay in port operations, replacing diesel withelectrical power tooperate these cranes canbe an important elementin improving operationaland environmentalperformance. Interestin the electrification ofRTGs has been growingfor several years; a trendthat is gaining renewedmomentum once again.Electrifying RTGs: Reduces CO2 and NOX emissionsReduces noise pollutionReduces maintenance costs and downtimeReduces fuel costsCavotec designs and manufactures solutions for theelectrification of RTGs which fall into two main categories: RTG cable reel electrical power supply in low andmedium voltages (LV, MV) RTG conductor bar electrical power supply in LV2Working closely with customers, Cavotec engineersprovide support throughout the entire lifetime of a productincluding: Feasibility analysisQuayside operationsFeeding pointsCable protectionRTG side movementPlug/unplugSafetyTraffic crossings

Cable reel technologyElectrifying cranes hasalways been part of theport strategy when lookingupon operation efficiencyand emission reductions. The electrification withthe cable reel technologyhas been adopted by manyports and since then hasdemonstrated to be aproven and highly reliabletechnology. Would it be forretrofitting existing dieselRTGs or powering brand newRTGs, the cable reel solutionrepresents strong benefitsfor ports.Benefits of usingcable reelsCustomers around the world have seen the followingbenefits of cable reel technology: High degree of flexibility with a logical, user-friendlyinterface Minimal infrastructure investment required In the unlikely event of technical failure, downtime iskept to a minimum Low maintenance costs Manual connection and disconnection The system can be adapted to MV power supply Cost efficiency Unrivalled safety for all types of electrical connectionPort authorities and crane manufacturers have used cablereel technology to operate STS and RMG cranes for manyyears. Operators know how to operate and maintain it,thus making the electrification of existing RTGs a natural, incremental step.3

Engineering anddesigning an efficientE-RTG system withcable reelsWhen electrifying RTGs, a location for the power FeedingPoint needs to be identified. Two options are availabledepending on the use of the RTG and how RTG operationsare conducted:End Feed Point (EFP) Feeding point of the RTG is located at the end locationof the container block RTG moves in one direction from the feed point RTG working one block but will require more cablesCentre Feed Point (CFP) Feed point of the RTG is located in the centre RTG moves in both directions from the feeding point RTG working more than one container block withoutbeing unplugged (less cable)58844826102470588448In order to improve operational efficiency, and to reduceconnection and disconnection times, Cavotec hasdeveloped the Double Anchor Openable system (DACO)that enables easy connection and disconnection to andfrom the oProtezion

Adaptive cable guidefor RTG electrificationCable guidingIn order to improve operational efficiency and to ensureease of connection and disconnection to and from theE-RTG, Cavotec has developed a self-adjusting cable guidethat follows the cable channel where power cables run, thus ensuring optimal crane positioning. Our system is equipped with ultrasonic sensors linked tothe crane PLC that enables positioning detection makingoperations safer and quicker. The cable guide adjustment range is typically /- 250mm Cables must be laid in the cable trench or channelaccurately Adaptive cable guide, in case of cable trench installation,is able to compensate sideways Cavotec has developed a self adjusting cable guide thatfollows the channel Cable guide adjustment range /- 250mm Ultrasonic sensors linked to crane PLC perform positiondetection and channel alignmentLV Switching panel Cavotec engineers LV switching panels which are usedbetween the power grid and the gen-set Based on client request, Cavotec can customize them inorder to meet our client requirements5

Advanced electricaljunction boxes, plugsand sockets as keyelements of E-RTGsCavotec’s expertise of the electrification of mobileequipment supports applications that operate in the mostdemanding of environments. Our experience enablesour customers to develop complete electrical connectionsystems that include:Yard junction boxes:Having a safe and robust junction box is a key element ofthe E-RTG system. Cavotec manufactures a wide rangeof junction boxes to guarantee safe operation and lowmaintenance costs. Standard LV and MV junction boxes Includes: contactor/circuit breaker, mechanical interlock, pilot lights, emergency stop Due to the specific location of some projects and basedon our strong willingness to support each customerrequest, Cavotec is also able to customise LV and MVjunction boxes upon request.6Power Connectors:Cavotec connectors are manufactured according to thehighest industry standards and allow our customers toquickly connect and disconnect equipment from powercables. Our Push-pull System is widely regarded as oneof the most efficient and safest ways for powering heavymobile equipment. Cavotec connectors are available either as LV (up to1.000V-660Amp), or MV (up to 15.000V-500Amp) Push-pull System for easy and quick connection anddisconnection IP 66 Pilot pins for control circuitSpecial versions can be provided with: Higher amperage Available mechanical interlock Available FO connectors

Conductor Bar SolutionsAs interest in usingconductor rails insteadof diesel generatorsto power RTG growsthroughout the globalports industry, Cavoteccontinues to develop andautomate conductor railtechnology to maximiseoperational efficiency.Plug in connection Automatic Connectionwith Telescopic armElectrifying RTGs can also be done with a conductor barsystem. This solution allows for the RTG to be poweredthrough conductor bars. A diesel generator is only requiredwhen maneuvering outside the aisle. There are currently two types of conductor rail systemsavailable:Manual solution with plug RTG moves with diesel generator stopping at thecollector trolley Mechanical connection to the collector trolleyestablished with steel ropes/coupling rod Manually disconnect of RTG generator Connect the plug hanging from the collector toThe RTG RTG electrically powered in container aisle throughthe bus barAutomatic solution with telescopic arm RTG moves with diesel generator stopping at theentrance point Collector trolley connects automatically to the bus bars RTG electrically powered in container aisle8

ERTG collector trollies Manual system: collector trolley is permanently connected to the bus bars Automatic system: collector trolley is installed on the telescopic arm on board the ERTGConductor RailconfigurationAs space conditions and requirements in container terminals are different, two types of conductor arrangementshave been developed, these are:Conductor railsingle sidedConductor raildouble sided9
