2011-2019 5.0L CoyoteTechnical ReferenceThe 2015 model year marked the first majordesign changes for the 5.0L Coyote enginesince its introduction in 2011. In 2018 the 5.0LCoyote engine was thoroughly reworked, featuring dual-fuel, high pressure directinjection combined with low-pressure portfuel injection technology for increased powerand efficiency. To date, the 2018-2019 Coyoteoffers the most amount of differences whencompared to 2011-2017 versions of the past.To help distinguish between the differencegenerations of engines the Gen 1, Gen 2,and Gen 3 designations are used: New cylinder-head casting, includingGen 1 – 2011-2014 MY Mustang GT Rebalanced forged crankshaft thatGen 2 – 2015-2017 MY Mustang GT,Ford Performance M-6007-M50AGen 3 – 2018-2019 MY Mustang GT,Ford Performance M-6007-M50CThe improvements to 2015 Coyote (or Gen2 Coyote) focus on allowing it to breathebetter. The improvements, many of whichare derived from the lessons learnedin developing the special-edition 20122013 Mustang BOSS 302, allow for betterbreathing, especially at higher engine speeds.revised ports that provide a straighterpath to the valves for less-restrictiveintake and exhaust flow and combustionchamber modifications to accommodatelarger valves Sinter forged connecting rods that wereused on the BOSS 302 engine that aremore durable for high-rpm operation Redesigned piston tops with deepercutouts to clear the new larger valvessupports higher-rpm operation A new intake manifold features chargemotion control valves to partially closeoff port flow at lower engine speeds. Thisincreases the air charge tumble and swirlfor improved air-fuel mixing, resulting inbetter fuel economy, idle stability, andlower emissions On the intake side, variable camshaft timingnow has mid-lock phasers allowing bettercontrol of the valve timing over a broaderrange of engine RPMGen 2 Coyote improvements over Gen 1: Larger intake valves Larger exhaust valves Revised intake camshafts Revised exhaust camshafts Stiffer valve springs to ensure that thev alves close completely at high RPMGen 22For Technical assistance please call the Ford Performance Parts Techline at 800-367-3788

2011-2019 5.0L CoyoteTechnical ReferenceGen 3 Coyote improvements over Gen 1, Gen 2: Larger bores to allow for larger valves PTWA (Plasma Transferred Wire Arc)cylinder bores as found on theGT350 5.2L Larger intake valves Larger exhaust valves Revised higher lift intake camshafts Revised higher lift exhaust camshafts S tiffer valve springs to allow for a highermaximum rpm of 7500rpm A ll new, stronger cylinder-head casting, including further revised ports fromGen 2 resulting in flow characteristicsapproaching the CNC’d ports in theGT350 5.2L. Higher compression 12:1 pistonswith deeper cutouts to clear thenew larger valves Rebalanced forged crankshaft thatsupports higher-rpm operation A new revised, higher flowing intakemanifold with the same CMCV featureas introduced on Gen 2 Dual fuel system – Direct Injection andPort Fuel systems which allow for ahigher compression ratio, maximizingperformance and fuel efficiency On the intake side, variable camshafttiming mid-lock phasers carry over fromGen 2. The Exhaust phasers migrate toan in-cylinder head oil control valve forbetter control at all speeds and loads Sinter forged connecting rods carriedover from the BOSS 302 engine andGen 2 CoyoteGen 2Gen 33For Technical assistance please call the Ford Performance Parts Techline at 800-367-3788

Gen 1 & 2 Coyote PartsCompatibilityCylinder Heads: The 2015-2017 Coyote(Gen 2) cylinder heads have improved portsand larger valves – and flow as good as the2012-2013 BOSS 302 CNC ported heads. The Gen 2 heads can be used on the Gen1 Coyote block as long as the 2015 HeadGasket is used due to the oil feed hole, check piston to valve clearance. H ead Gasket & Head Bolt KitPN - M-6067-M50 G en 1 camshafts can be used in the Gen 2heads on a Gen 1 block with Gen 1 timingchains and phasersCamshafts: The Gen 2 camshafts are 13mmlift on the intake and exhaust, which is 1mmof added lift vs. the Gen 1 CoyoteChain-drive: The Gen 2 phasers , primarychain, and crank-sprocket are a matchedset and cannot be interchanged with Gen 1chain-drive. Also, VCT bolts are new forGen 2 chain-drive due to bolt clearanceto VCT solenoids Gen 2 Chain Drive KitPN - M-6004-A5015Valve Springs Gen 2 valve springs are higher pressurethan the standard Gen 1 spring - and arethe same valve spring as used on the2012-2013 Boss 302 Coyote engines BOSS 302R Valve SpringsPN – M-6513-M50BR Gen 2 camshafts must be used withthe Gen 2 chain-drive and phasersGen 2 Head Gasket – unrestricted oil passage for VCT operationFIGURE 16For Technical assistance please call the Ford Performance Parts Techline at 800-367-3788

Gen 1 & 2 Coyote PartsCompatibilityIntake manifold: The Gen 2 intake manifoldwill fit Gen 1 engine, however no appreciableperformance gains have been found The Gen 2 intake now has CMCV (charge Gen 1 intake manifolds can be usedon the Gen 2 heads/engine with minormodifications to the manifold shownin Figure 2motion control valves) for emissions andlow speed idle qualityFigure 2Gen 1 Intake interferes withGen 2 Head in these locationson each side. Gen 1 & 2 Coyote PartsCompatibilityEngine block: Gen 2 block has an added oilreturn and requires the matching Gen 2 OFA(oil filter adapter) Gen 2 block can be used for builds with Gen 1or 2 components as long as the Gen 2 OFAis used Gen 2 block uses 11MM head boltsAdded return passage fordiverted oil from oil filteradapter8For Technical assistance please call the Ford Performance Parts Techline at 800-367-3788

Gen 3 Coyote PartsCompatibilityCylinder Heads: The 2018-2019 Coyote,Gen 3 cylinder heads have further improvedports and larger valves – and flow as nearlyas well as the GT350 5.2L CNC ported heads.Camshafts: The Gen 3 camshafts are14mm lift on the intake and exhaust, which is1mm of added lift vs. the Gen 2 Coyote, and2mm over Gen 1 Gen 3 camshafts must be used with theGen 3 chain-drive and phasers The exhaust camshaft #1 journal is alsoChain-drive: The Gen 3 Coyote uses Gen2 intake phasers, primary chains , secondarychains and crank sprocket. The exhaustphasers are new for Gen 3 and are attachedwith a single bolt. Gen 3 Chain Drive KitPN - M-6004-A5018Valve Springs Gen 3 valve springs are higher pressure andhave a taller installed height than Gen 2larger to accommodate seals whichprevent oil leakage from the phaserduring operationGen 2Bridge Cooling Holesin Head Gasket, Gen 2to Gen 3 ComparisonGen 39For Technical assistance please call the Ford Performance Parts Techline at 800-367-3788
