Chapter 1: Introduction1. Introduction1.1 About NiceLabelNiceLabel is a software package written for MicrosoftWindows operating system, which lets you create andprint labels and fully supports WYSIWYG (What YouSee Is What You Get). Using NiceLabel, you can easilydesign any label to include bar codes, text, lines, boxesand graphics. You can also use your existing databases to automaticallyprint labels, with content based on data. (Text orgraphics)The OLE 2.0 function allows you to use other Windowsapplications to create different objects on your labels (i.e.Word for Windows for text objects or Corel Draw forgraphics).DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) lets other applicationcontrol NiceLabel. You can write your own front-endapplications in any of the program languages (BorlandDelphi, Microsoft Visual Basic ), which takes care ofthe data preparation or processing and then sends thecommands for printing to NiceLabel. From version 2.0, NiceLabel is also an OLE Automationserver. This further enhances the possibility of labelproduction from other applications. When creating labels, standard available label stock sizesare pre-defined and already available for usage. But youcan also define your stock formats and save them for aleter use.NiceLabel Pro User's Manual1-1

Chapter 1: IntroductionThe label design method is very user-friendly andflexible. Multiple label elements are available so you cantruly design the label layout the way you want it. Usageof phantom objects allows you to simulate a pre-printedlabel that already contains lines, logotypes etc. Theseobjects will not be printed but will help you to align otherlabel elements to pre-printed design.Data can be entered in the process of designing the labelor later, using variable data from various sources(keyboard, file, database) and incorporate the data intothe labels. Before starting the production of the labels, you canpreview them on the monitor. This functionality helpsyou to verify the corectness of the variable data and savestime and the label material. When you are satisfied withthe result on the screen, go ahead and print the labels forreal.NiceLabel software supports all Windows printers thathave provided a Windows printer driver, including colorprinters (HP LJ, HP DeskJet, Epson Stylus, Epson StylusColor.). However, the best printing results in NiceLabelsoftware are achieved when printing to thermal transferprinters using specially developed NiceDrivers.NiceDrivers are available for all major thermal transferprinter families and they really boost printingperformance to the maximum.1.2 About this manualThe User's Manual contains following sections:Introduction: This chapter will lead you through theprocess of designing the sample label and printing it.Reference: This chapter describes details and explainsall the commands used in the labeling software. Youshould refer to this chapter regularly while designinglabels, until you have completely familiarized yourselfwith the commands. By using the information containedin this chapter, you will be very quickly able to uselabeling software efficiently.1-2NiceLabel Pro User's Manual

Chapter 1: IntroductionMiscellaneous: Additional useful information aboutfeatures and advanced setting is described in this chapter.Integration and Connectivity: This chapter describeshow labeling software can be used for seamlessintegration of label printing to your custom applicationsand which connectivity methods are available forincluding labelling to information systems without anymodifications to existing applications. How to. Few most commonly used actions aredescribed in this section of the manual in details. Byreading this section you will be able to produce verycomplex labels in a mater of minutes.NiceLabel Product Range. There is more toNiceLabel than just NiceLabel Pro. Chapter 2: Overview2. Overview2.1 StartFollowing the examples in this chapter, you will learnhow to design and print labels in the most efficient way, using the intuitive tools in the program.By the end of this chapter, you will be able to create andprint fairly complex labels on your own.If you need more detailed information, refer to chapterReference, following this tutorial.Start the labeling software by double clicking theprogram icon on the desktop. First the splash screen willbe displayed, showing the application name and versionnumber, then window with working area will appear:Working windowNiceLabel Pro User's Manual2-1

Chapter 2: Overview2.1.1 Working EnvironmentThe header line on the screen shows the version oflabeling software you are using and the file name of theopened label. The second line - menu bar - shows the command optionsavailable when designing and printing labels.Below this line there are icons to help you speed-updesigning and printing labels:Design new label.Open existing label.Save the label.Cut the selected object(s).Copy the selected object(s).Paste the selected object(s).Undo the last command.Redo the last command.Printer settings.Print the label.Simulate printing the label on the screen. Chapter 2: OverviewWorking environment for the new label will appear.Working window after New label commandThe dimensions of the label are set as default values.Every time a new label is created, it is set up with defaultprinter. Information about the paper size is read fromControl Panel's settings. Usually the dimensions, andother label parameters, such as label title, description, author and type of the printer are not set correctly foryour specific label. That is why by default a special LabelSetup Wizard appears and allows you to set theseparameters. This Wizard can of course be disabled if youwould like to set label parameters manually. In Label Setup Wizard you first have to select the printer,on which you want to print labels. Select the printer fromthe list of installed printers on your system. If your printeris not available in the list, you will have to install it first.NiceDrivers for thermal-transfer printers are available onyour CD-ROM in folder Drivers, start the programPRNINST.EXE to start the Printer Installation Wizard. You can also set the printer advanced settings by clickingthe Printer Setup button.2-4NiceLabel Pro User's Manual

The page and itsdimensions are the physical size of the paper. The label isthe part of the page. The page can have one or morelabels. The labels are arranged on the page in columnsand rows. On thermal printers the label size is usually thesame as page size.Note, that this dialog is different for thermal-transfer andoffice printers.Label width and height represent the dimensions of onelabel.Horizontal offset defines the distance of the left edge ofthe label in the first column from the left edge of the page(it would be "0", when both edges are in the sameposition).Vertical offset defines the distance of the bottom edge ofthe labels in the last row from the bottom edge of thepage. This dimension will be "0", when edges are die-cut.Vertical gap represents the vertical distance between twocolumns of labels.NiceLabel Pro User's Manual2-7

Chapter 2: OverviewHorizontal gap represents the distance between each rowof the labels.Labels across, horizontal and vertical, represent thenumber of rows and columns of labels on the page.Entering the right values for the dimensions of the label, you can define virtually any shape of the label.Note, if you selected rolls of labels, vertical offset andnumber of labels are omitted. When you have entered all label parameters, click Finishbutton and they will be updated to reflect the desiredlabel format.
