Teamcenter Express“Rapid cPDm Deployment for Mid-SizedManufacturing Companies”This CIMdata-authored Teamcenter Express Program Review describes SiemensPLM Software’s collaborative Product Definition management (cPDm) solution, the core data management component of the Velocity Series—a set ofpreconfigured and easy-to-deploy design and data management PLM-enablingsolutions. Siemens PLM Software has designed this offering specifically toaddress the product design through manufacturing planning needs of small- tomedium-sized companies. This paper provides an overall description as well asCIMdata’s assessment of the Teamcenter Express program for the ProductLifecycle Management (PLM) market. This program review is an assessment ofthe entire Teamcenter Express effort, including development, marketing, andsales, and the product itself (i.e., Teamcenter Express Version 4).1. Executive SummaryTeamcenter Express is the core product data managementcomponent of Siemens PLM Software’s Velocity Series—aset of preconfigured and easy-to-deploy design, manufacturing, and data management solutions. SiemensPLM Software (Siemens) positions the Velocity Series assupporting a company’s move to 3D; a move that can beaccomplished at a company’s own pace. Siemens hasdesigned this offering specifically to address the productdesign through manufacturing planning needs of small- tomedium-sized companies (i.e., mid-market companies) inthe following industrial segments: Mechanical machinery and equipment Electromechanical Consumer electronics Consumer product Automotive components Tool and mold shops that support the aboveindustriesTeamcenter Express is also being deployed within divisionsand development groups of larger companies, andengineering departments of companies that are part of anOriginal Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) supply chain.According to Siemens’ sales data, 52% of all TeamcenterExpress purchases have been made by mid-marketcompanies and 24% have been made by divisions of largercompanies. To understand the rational used by some ofthese companies, a number of customer testimonials havebeen provided throughout this paper as sidebars. Thesetestimonials provide a summary of why TeamcenterTeamcenter Express –A CIMdata Program ReviewExpress was selected to support specific PLM requirements, what the solution is being used for, and what type ofbenefits the company is receiving.According to CIMdata’s research and experience, midmarket PLM solutions, like Siemens’ Teamcenter Expressand others, focus on PLM issues that affect multipleindustries. Mid-market PLM solutions, and the capabilitiesthey provide, best support small- to medium-sizedmanufacturing companies which generally employ fewerthan 5,000 employees, of which fewer than 200 usually areengineers, (or similar-sized divisions of largerorganizations) who design/engineer parts, components, andassemblies that are low to medium in complexity. Typicalengineering functionality includes, at a minimum, CAD filemanagement and basic CAD integrations (i.e., simple oneway integrations that transfer BOM information from theCAD tool to the cPDm solution); bill-of-material (BOM)and bill-of-information (BOI) creation and management;documents and CAD file visualization (usually somecombination of 2D and 3D viewing is provided); andworkflow management capabilities to automate variousengineering processes (e.g., engineering change andconfiguration control), and basic one-way integrations thattransfer BOM information from the data managementenvironment to ERP (e.g., BOM release to manufacturing). For small- to medium-sized manufacturing companies thatdesign/engineer simple parts or components, configurationmanagement support is not as critical. Their requirementsfocus on data vault management, workflow automation, andapplications that support specific needs in e 1

management, process planning, and quality assurance). Forthose companies that design/engineer medium- to highlycomplex products (e.g., engines/turbines, machine tools, medical equipment, and heavy equipment), thesecapabilities must be supplemented by robust productstructure and configuration management support. These solutions usually work with a wide variety ofsoftware applications, and with traditional paper-basedsystems that generate or use product related data. They areusually delivered on a mix of computers, workstations, andassociated hardware. Typical users include managers, administrators, and end-users from a variety of hasing, marketing, sales, quality, and information technology thatall need to access and manipulate product data (i.e., productdefinition information). These solutions improvecommunication and cooperation between these diversegroups and form the basis for organizations to support theirproduct definition lifecycle activities. accurately and efficiently model structures of alltypes. It is available with a version of one of theindustry’s leading solvers—Nastran.CAM Express is a CAD-neutral version ofSiemens’ high-end NX CAM solution focused onservicing mid-market needs. It is fully integratedwith both Solid Edge and NX, and is provided infour different configurations (2½-axis, 3-axis,mill-turn, and advanced machining).Teamcenter Express is the focus of this program review. This solution is basically a preconfigured, mid-marketfocused configuration of Teamcenter 2007 (Siemens’recently released “unified” Teamcenter platform). Itleverages Teamcenter’s product development centriccapabilities and enhances them by delivering specificsupport for use cases typically found in mid-sizemanufacturing organizations and a set of preconfiguredworkflows, reports, wizards, organizational structures, anduser roles. Siemens has done an excellent job packagingTeamcenter Express into a very capable mid-marketcollaborative Product Definition management (cPDm)business solution. Figure 1 is an example of its wellstructured user interface. The key to success in the mid-market is the developmentand delivery of out-of-the-box applications and businesssolutions based on best practices that support anenterprise’s product definition information managementSiemens’ intent from the beginning was for Teamcenterrequirements. AKG AcousticsAKG Acoustics is a member of the Harman International group and like all other companies within this group, AKGAcoustics is in the audio business. AKG Acoustics offers two primary products: microphones and headphones (wired andwireless). The company is located in Vienna, Austria and employs approximately 300 people. They pride themselves intheir extensive know-how related to the science of acoustics, and the R & D and manufacture of audio products.Historically, AKG Acoustics had used I-deas as their 3D CAD tool. During their investigation of a replacement systemthey decided to stay with the same solution provider and migrate to Solid Edge, and implement Teamcenter Express insupport of their product lifecycle management requirements. PBU CAD-Systeme GmbH, a Siemens Channel Partner, provides Teamcenter Express software and support for AKG Acoustics.AKG Acoustics is currently completing its implementation of Teamcenter Express. According to Mr. Stefan Prüller,Mechanical Engineer and CAD Administrator at AKG Acoustics, the company plans on finalizing the implementation ofTeamcenter Express by mid 2008, and have their ERP integration installed in early 2009. In general, Teamcenter Expresswill be used to manage CAD data mainly from Solid Edge, and the diversity of other manufacturing and documentationtools used by the company. In addition, Teamcenter Express will be used to manage their product data related release andapproval processes. Finally, AKG Acoustics looks to use Teamcenter Express to accurately calculate, at an early stage inthe product development cycle, the cost to bring to market and the commercial price of a product being developed.Mr. Prüller reports that the company’s main driver for purchasing Teamcenter Express (i.e., implementing PLM) is to takecontrol of the many different development solutions utilized by the organization and to manage the resulting data.Currently, most of the data takes the form of paper documents. With the implementation of Teamcenter Express much ofthe organization’s data should migrate to a digital format that can be more easily accessed and leveraged through theTeamcenter Express solution. Mr. Prüller notes that the current paper-based product development process is timeconsuming and unreliable since you can never be sure that you are using the latest version of a product and component, andits associated product definition information. In their business, time-to-market is becoming critical as well as after salessupport since they guarantee spares for up to 10 years, depending on the product line.Building this cPDm solution on top of the Teamcenterplatform has allowed Siemens to continue to deliversignificant enhancements, including a reasonable set ofcustomer-driven enhancements (e.g., “smart codes” and theincorporation of project management capabilities) to themarket quickly while leveraging one of the world’s mostwidely-used enterprise PLM platforms. With this mostrecent release, Siemens has introduced a number of notableenhancements to Teamcenter Express’ capabilities, including: Architecture—move to new “unified” TeamcenterService-Oriented-Architecture (SOA) basedplatform. Project/program management—addition ofsupporting functionality. Usability—user focused productivityenhancements (e.g., new “summary” tab). ERP integration—a higher degree of PLM to ERPprocess synchronization.CIMdata continues to be impressed with TeamcenterExpress and recommends that all small- to medium-sizeddiscrete manufacturing companies in the market for anenterprise class cPDm solution seriously considerTeamcenter Express and the other Velocity Seriescomponents.Page 4According to Siemens, Teamcenter Express has beendesigned to address the needs of engineering organizationswhich: Are experiencing a rapid explosion of engineeringdata and need to manage data from multiple CADsources. Need to improve the efficiency of their designrelease and engineering change processes. Can take advantage of preconfigured processes, reducing the need to invest in customizationbefore gaining advantage from investments. Use Microsoft Windows and associated Microsoftproducts for a common user environment. Need to collaborate with suppliers, customers, andpartners. Need a growth path for advanced capabilities—scalability with built-in data protection to allowfor application growth.Teamcenter Express’ robust foundation technologies andcore functions have been greatly enhanced through theimplementation of preconfigured best-practice-basedprocesses, data model, and associated support items (e.g.,training, documentation, services, etc.). This has allowedSiemens to truly deliver a total solution that addresses manycommon business needs encountered by small- to medium-Teamcenter Express–A CIMdata Program Review

3. Program AssessmentThis section reviews the overall program Siemens PLMSoftware has put into place to support Teamcenter Express. This section includes a brief perspective of Siemens PLMSoftware, its overall mid-market strategy and solutionoffering, and a discussion of the primary objectives that aredriving the program.3.1 Company Objectives andBackgroundSiemens PLM Software with headquarters in Plano, Texas,is a business unit of the Siemens Industry AutomationDivision. The Siemens Industry Automation Division(Nuremberg, Germany), a division of the Siemens IndustrySector, is a worldwide leader in the fields of automationsystems, low-voltage switchgear, and industrial software. Its portfolio ranges from standard products for themanufacturing and process industries, to solutions forwhole industries and systems that encompass theautomation of entire automobile production facilities andchemical plants. Siemens announced its intent to acquireUGS for 3.5 billion and make it part of the company’sIndustry Automation in January 2007. In May 2007,Siemens’ acquisition of UGS was finalized. Siemens PLMSoftware has a long history in the PLM market as one of themajor suppliers of PLM solutions to industry. Theirrevenues in 2007 were just over 1.38 billion.According to CIMdata’s research, Siemens PLM Softwarewas the second-largest overall PLM revenue generatoramong the PLM Mindshare Leaders, and had the largestmarket presence in the cPDm sector in 2007. Siemens PLMSoftware continued to increase its license revenues with itsgreatest growth in the Teamcenter business line. SiemensPLM Software is a global supplier of PLM solutions withoffices and customers around the world.Siemens PLM Software provides one of the broadest anddeepest suites of PLM offerings in the industry, and hascontinued an aggressive program of acquisition andpartnerships to broaden their offerings even further.Additionally, they have continued to expand their businessinto additional industries and have established a set of keysystems integrator relationships to increase their focus onvarious geographies and industries. In September 2005, Siemens announced their VelocitySeries portfolio for mid-sized companies. Thisannouncement was intended to take advantage of thegrowing demand for PLM among mid-sized companies andSiemens’ strength in the breadth of their product lines, toPage 6expand their own coverage of PLM for industry, andenhance their own business growth. To establish animproved mechanism to take the Velocity Series to market,Siemens also launched a Global Channel Program designedto further its geographic and industry presence through abroad network of partners. In the two plus years since Teamcenter Express’ launch, market acceptance has been reasonably strong, especially inthe European market and with sales to more than 300customers, in more than 35 countries globally. It isimportant to note that 73% of the companies that havepurchased Teamcenter Express have purchased more thanfive licenses and the average installation has 17 licenses.Siemens PLM Software reports that they have 51,000customers in 62 countries, and they have 4.6 millionlicensed seats of PLM software. For the seventhconsecutive year, Siemens PLM Software has held the leadposition in CIMdata’s cPDm study. In summary, Siemens’overall PLM market position is very strong.3.2 Marketing, Sales, and PackagingSiemens markets and sells its full suite of PLM solutions tosmall, medium, and large companies primarily in theaerospace and defense, automotive, consumer products,high-tech electronics, machinery, and medical equipmentindustries. As mentioned earlier, Siemens has positionedTeamcenter Express as a mid-market PLM solution formanufacturers in number of different discrete industrysegments. These include: Mechanical machinery and equipment Electromechanical Consumer electronics Consumer product Automotive components Tool and mold shops that support the aboveindustriesTeamcenter Express is positioned as an easy-to-buy, install, learn, use, and manage cPDm solution for the mid-market.According to CIMdata’s research, companies within theabove industry segments have been very receptive to midmarket PLM solutions because they share many of the samebusiness challenges and characteristics: An increased focus on design/engineering andproduction of primarily mechanical parts, components, and assemblies, with the need tocapture and manage this product related datathroughout the enterprise. Relatively localized engineering and design, where the Engineering Manager understands theneed for data management.Teamcenter Express–A CIMdata Program Review

The manufacturing engineering responsibilitiesare within the engineering department and therelationship between product engineering andmanufacturing engineering is well understood. The need to integrate with one or more MRPII/ERP systems to communicate productdefinition information but with limited designsupply chain management requirements; onlybasic supplier access is required. The need to manage components and suppliers aspart of the product development process, not as aseparate, “after the fact” task.Limited Information Technology (IT) resources,so they need software at a reasonable price point, that is easy to install and maintain, is integrated innature to reduce integration costs, and thatgenerates a quick return on investment (i.e.,months, not years). These characteristics apply to many enterprises that supplyOEMs, as well as companies that sell their products directlyto consumers. Due to their limited financial and supportresources, these companies are rarely early adopters of newtechnologies. However, as packaged solutions becomeavailable at lower price points, these organizations providea broad market for software sales, and limited services andconsulting. Over the last several years, PLM solutions formid-market enterprises (e.g., Teamcenter Express) havebecome both feature-rich and price-affordable.Teamcenter Express, along with Siemens’ other PLMsolutions, is sold directly as well as through multiple globalchannel partners. In general, Siemens has defined a set ofnamed accounts by industry and geography. This helps bothSiemens’ direct sales organization as well as its channelpartners successfully compete in the market. The programalso supports an incentive-laden business developmentplan. Additionally, Siemens strongly encourages partners toincrease their investment in the multi-level certification andtraining components of the program. To date, Siemens hastrained sales and implementation resources from more than400 channel partners globally.Since the channel partner program’s inception a little overtwo years ago, Siemens has spent a significant amount oftime, effort, and money developing and rolling out channelsupporting Web portal, material, seminars, training classes, and education. According to Siemens, over the last twoyears, Teamcenter Express has been sold to companies inten languages and 35 countries across its three zones (i.e.,Europe/Middle East/Africa, Americas, and Asia-Pacific). Itis interesting to note that in some cases the introduction ofTeamcenter Express has led to the sale of Teamcenter. The initial need for Teamcenter Express came from thedesign management issues faced by today’s typical small-Teamcenter Express–A CIMdata Program Reviewto medium-sized manufacturing company. Siemensrecognized these needs and chose to develop a highlypreconfigured cPDm-focused PLM solution based on theirproven Teamcenter platform. By basing their solution onTeamcenter, Siemens was able to speed the solution’sdevelopment and provide a natural integration with a user’sdaily Windows-based desktop environment, and a long listof engineering-centric development tools (e.g., Solid Edge,NX and NX CAM, I-deas NX Series, AutoCAD, CATIAV5, Inventor, Pro/ENGINEER, and SolidWorks) as well asa set of ERP integrations (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics andSAP).Teamcenter Express is packaged and sold based uponnamed user licenses—Teamcenter Express Author,Teamcenter Express Professional, Teamcenter ExpressConsumer and Teamcenter Express Shop Floor Viewerrepresent the core licensing packages. Each of theselicenses provides preconfigured access to the followingspecific role-based functionality: Teamcenter Express Author—primarily for CADdesigners and engineers. This license providesaccess to PDM data creation and vaulting, workflow, and product structure managementfunctionality. Additionally, access is provided tobasic visualization capabilities and optional CADintegrations. Teamcenter Express Professional—primarily forengineering managers, manufacturing planners, and engineering system administrators. Thislicense provides access to PDM data creation andvaulting, workflow, and product structuremanagement functionality. In addition, access isprovided to enhanced visualization capabilities(e.g., 3D navigation and markup and PMIsymbols). Teamcenter Express Consumer—primarily forpurchasing agents, office administrators, designoffice clerks, and marketing managers. Thislicense allows users to query, view, print, andparticipate in workflows. Teamcenter Express Shop Floor Viewer—primarily for shop floor team leaders and machineoperators to search, view, and interrogate releasedproduct data.In addition to these core licenses, Siemens offers thefollowing specialized named user licenses: Teamcenter Express Manufacturing Author—primarily for manufacturing engineers who useNX CAM or CAM Express to definemanufacturing oriented product information aspart of the product lifecycle. Teamcenter Express Manufacturing PartPlanner—primarily for manufacturing engineersPage 7

responsible for defining part-orientedmanufacturing plans, and associatedmanufacturing processes and tooling.Teamcenter Express Manufacturing ResourceManager—primarily for manufacturing engineersresponsible for the definition and management ofmanufacturing resources (e.g., machine tools, cutting tools, tool assemblies, fixtures, etc.).Teamcenter Express for SAP—primarily forproduct development personnel responsible forthe release or change of engineering data (e.g.,parts and BOMs) to SAP. A minimum of fivelicenses must be purchased.Teamcenter Program Execution Management –primarily for project and program schedulingTeamcenter Classification—primarily for rigorousclassification of items based on company andinternational standards.Current Siemens prices for all the role-based licensesdescribed above appear to be reasonable and competitive atthe mid-market entry point being targeted. In addition to the above licenses, the Teamcenter Expresssolution requires Windows XP or Wi
