CodyCONTRIBUTING WRITERDavid PriceCONTRIBUTING WRITERJohn YoltonLAYOUT & DESIGNGeorge H. Dean Co.Do you consider pulp and paper mills to beprime targets for cyber criminals and hackers?Maybe they’re not as desirable a target in asmuch as government facilities or financialinstitutions, but mills, corporate headquartersand R&D facilities all present real targetsfor hackers or can fall victim to their ownpeople who unknowingly download a malicious program.“A hacker may act from a desire formoney, power, casual sabotage or revenge. But whatever drives them, cyber securitybreaches have the potential to create havoc,”says Patrik Boo, a cyber security expert whoworks for ABB (see story on pg. 18).Boo points out that paper mills are especially vulnerable to cyber attack and theresults can be catastrophic. “Even minorincidents can bring production to a halt —sometimes for days. Expenses can mount, including costs for bringing in specialists tohandle the problems. Your data can be lost, your system may be damaged and even yourpeople and equipment can be harmed. Itmay be weeks before your mill is operatingsmoothly again. In a worst case scenario, your control system can be wiped out, andyou may even be put out of business,”Boo also warns that cyber crime is fastbecoming a money-making scheme forhackers. “One of the most devastating ways acyber criminal can hurt a mill is by hackinginto the control system and stealing production data. Before mill personnel even noticethe breach, the hackers will have sold thatdata to competitors.”So what do you do? How do you know ifyour mill(s) or other facilities are safe?Seth Berman, executive managing direc-4SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013VOLUME 129, NO. 5S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 1 3PaperAgetor and UK head of Stroz Friedberg, a digitalforensics and investigating firm, says that asecurity audit is a good start in the process ofevaluating the security of a facility’s systems.“While there is no foolproof way to prevent an attack, it is certainly possible fororganizations to build greater resilience. Thisprocess typically starts with an audit of theIT and physical security system which, like afinancial audit, ought to be carried out by anoutside team without a stake in the existingIT infrastructure.“The audit team looks to understand thecompany’s threat profile and any vulnerabilities in its security systems. In additionto ensuring that firewalls and other security measures are up to industry standard,a thorough security assessment will alsoidentify where sensitive data is stored andwhether this can be segmented or furtherremoved from the rest of the IT system,”says Berman.I did a lot of digging on the Internet totry to find an instance where a pulp and/or paper mill had reported a breach in itscomputer systems, but couldn’t find one, although that’s not surprising. No one, whether it’s a mill, a utilities company or agovernment agency, wants to admit or publicize the fact that its systems were hacked.Something to think about: “Cyber crimeis one of the greatest business and technology threats of the digital age,” says Berman.“As adversaries become increasingly sophisticated and resourceful, the failure to prepareis simply no longer an option. The financial, governance and reputational risks continueto grow, urgently requiring a greater focus onvigilance and preparedness.” nSALES OFFICE20 Schofield RoadCohasset, MA 02025-1922Phone: (781) 923-1016Fax: (781) 923-1389email: mobrien@paperage.comWeb Site: www.paperage.comEDITORIAL OFFICE42A Country WayScituate, MA 02066-3743Phone: (781) 378-2126Fax: (781) 923-1389email: jobrien@paperage.comWeb Site: www.paperage.comCopyright 2013 by O’Brien Publications, Inc. But the contract is due to expire soon and despite its bestefforts, CMPC has been unable to obtain a new supply contractwith prices that would allow the mill to continue profitableoperations.Hexacomb, a Boise company, has opened a new manufacturingfacility in central Mexico. The facility, located in the state of Querétaro, will be manufacturing Hexacomb’s full line of paper-based honeycomb protective packaging products, including sheets, runners, edge andcorner protectors.“Due to the sizeable demand in Mexico for Hexacombproducts, we have added a second manufacturing facility there,”explained Scott Daniel, President of Hexacomb.Hexacomb has been supplying its customers in centralMexico from its Monterrey facility, which is located in the northeastern part of the country. The additional Hexacomb honeycomb production outputwill address growing demand from multiple market segmentsincluding automotive, glass, spinning mills, appliances and food/beverage, the company noted.“We did not want to closethe mill and have searchedfor options to keep PapelesRío Vergara in operation.”— Hernán Rodriguez, CEO,Empresas CMPCIn addition, due to the rising costs of electricity in the pastfew years, newsprint production at the mill has gradually beenreduced. We did notwant to close the mill and have searched for options to keepPapeles Río Vergara in operation. Unfortunately, the economicreality of higher electricity prices made this impossible,” saidHernán Rodriguez, CEO of Empresas CMPC.“The company will make every effort to accommodate themill’s workforce. The 202 workers will be offered a retirementplan with corresponding indemnification program, as well asinitiatives to reallocate workers into other subsidiaries of CMPC,and a special bonus for workers who remain with the companyuntil November 30, 2013,” Rodriguez added. The Papeles Río Vergara mill has been producing newsprintsince 1957.All other CMPC businesses, which are substantially lesspower-intensive, will continue to operate normally. The Company is moving forward with investments in cogeneration in electric and thermal energy, which will produceapproximately 82% of the energy required for CMPC’s Chileanoperations in 2013.8S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 1 3PaperAgeEUROPERottneros Mill in Sweden to ContinueProducing Groundwood PulpRottneros said that recentproduct and process developments at its Rottneros pulpmill in Sweden have gainedsuccess in the market, whichhas in turn boosted demandfor its pulp. industry newsREPORTChina Has Become World’s Largest Importer of Hardwood ChipsGrowing demand for paper in Chinahas not only forced the country toimport large volumes of pulp to supplythe country’s paper machines, but alsoresulted in investments in new pulpproduction within China, according toWood Resource Quarterly (WRQ).Because of a lack of competitivelypriced wood fiber in China, the twopulp companies with the largest pulpmills in the country, Asia Pacific Resources InternationalLtd (APRIL) and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), are procuringmuch of their wood fiber needs from out-of-country sources. As a consequence, importation of wood chips to China hassurged the past few years. In just five years, the import valuefor wood chips has increased from 180 million in 2008 to 1.3 billion in 2012, and this year the estimated import valuecould be close to 1.5 billion dollars. It has only been a matter of time before China becamethe largest importer of hardwood chips in the world. In thesecond quarter of 2013, China surpassed Japan with the record importation of almost 2.4 million m3 of chips,WRQ reported.Although there have been sporadic shipments of chips from LatinAmerica, Malaysia and South Africaduring 2012 and 2013, there are reallyonly four countries that have been supplying China with wood fiber the pastfew years. Those countries are Australia, Indonesia, Thailandand Vietnam, with Vietnam accounting for over half of thetotal import volume.Another interesting development is that the average costof imported wood chips has declined by almost six percentfrom the second quarter of 2012 to the same period in 2013.The biggest price decline has been in Australian chips, whichhave fallen over 11% in one year. Because of this price drop,in the 2Q/13, Australia exported its highest quarterly volumeto China since 2010, WRQ noted.DON’T FOUL THE SWITCH!Help prevent collisions with passing traffic by installing Track ClearanceMarkers on both converging tracks.
