1. CLIMATE CHANGE1.1. GLOBAL SCENARIO1.1.1. EMISSIONS GAP REPORT Why in News?Recently, UN Environment Programme (UNEP)launched its tenth edition of Emissions Gap Report2019.Key Findings in the report The report assesses the gap betweenanticipated emissions in 2030 and levelsconsistent with the 1.5 C and 2 C targets of theParis Agreement’.GHG emissions have risen at a rate of 1.5% peryear in the last decade. G20 nations collectivelyaccount for 78% of all emissions. The top four emitters (China, USA, EU andIndia) contribute to over 55% of the totalemissions over the last decade, excludingemissions from land-use change such asdeforestation.China, the EU28, India, Mexico, Russia andTurkey are projected to meet their targets withcurrent policies. India, Russia and Turkey areprojected to be ‘over perform’ their targets byaround 15%.World has to cut its emissions by 7.6% eachyear between 2020 and 2030 to get on tracktowards the 1.5 C temperature goal of the ParisAgreement.Even if all current unconditional commitmentsunder the Paris Agreement are implemented, temperatures are expected to rise by 3.2 C.Collective ambition in NDCs must increasemore than fivefold over current levels todeliver the cuts needed over the next decadefor the 1.5 C goal.About UN Environment Programme (UNEP) UNEP is the leading global environmentalauthority that sets the global ation of the environmental dimensionof sustainable development within the UnitedNations system. It is Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. It depends on voluntary contributions for 95% ofits funding. Other Flagship Publications: Our Planet; Tunza;Atlas of Our Changing Environment; GlobalEnvironment Outlook. United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA)is governing body of the UNEP.o UNEA is the world’s highest-level decisionmaking body on the environment, with a3 universal membership of all 193 MemberStates.UNEP also host the secretariats of many criticalmultilateral environmental agreements. Theseinclude:o The Convention on Biological Diversityo The Convention on International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Fauna and Florao The Minamata Convention on Mercuryo The Basel, Rotterdam and StockholmConventionso The Vienna Convention for the Protection ofOzone Layer and the Montreal Protocolo The Convention on Migratory Specieso The Carpathian Convention- subregionaltreatytofosterthesustainabledevelopment and the protection of theCarpathian region (Europe's largestmountain range)o The Bamako Convention- Treaty of Africannations prohibiting the import into Africa ofany hazardous waste.o The Tehran Convention- Protection of theMarine Environment of the Caspian SeaAwards by UNEPo Champions of the Earth is the UnitedNations highest environmental honour.o UN Environment is a founding partner of theSEED Awards, which support innovative,small-scale and locally driven entrepreneursaround the globe who integrate social andenvironmental benefits into their businessmodels.o The UN Environment Sasakawa Prizerecognizes outstanding individuals andorganizations for their contributions to theprotection of the environment and thepromotion of sustainable development. The Faith for Earth Initiative: UNEP launched theFaith for Earth Initiative in November 2017. Thegoal of Faith for Earth is to strategically engagewith faith-based organizations and partner withthem to collectively achieve the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDG) and fulfill theobjectives of the 2030 Agenda.Related newsU.N. Environment Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) It is a partnership between United NationsEnvironment and the global financial sectorcreated in the wake of the 1992 Earth Summitwith a mission to promote sustainable finance. The UNEP FI consists of 215 members fromfinancial institutions, banks, investors andinsurance companies among others. UNEP FI hosts its Global Roundtable every otheryear and has done so since 1994. Development represents the backbone of theInitiative. It is also a founding member of the UnitedNations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE)initiative along with the Principles forResponsible Investment (PRI), the UnitedNations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD), and the UN Global Compact. 20 institutional investors from 11 countries calledas Investor Pilot Group, convened by the U.N.Environment Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) havecome up with a report that helps investorsunderstand how to calculate the risk companiesface from climate change.Related informationIndia’s NDC Targets To reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33to 35 per cent by 2030 from 2005 level. To achieve about 40 per cent cumulative electricpower installed capacity from non-fossil fuelbased energy resources by 2030, with the help oftransfer of technology and low cost internationalfinance, including from Green Climate Fund. To create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent throughadditional forest and tree cover by 2030.1.1.2. WMO STATEMENT ON THE STATEOF THE GLOBAL CLIMATE IN 2019Why in News?Recently, World Meteorological Organisationreleased “WMO Statement on the State of theGlobal Climate in 2019”.Highlights of the report Global mean temperature: It increased in 2019which was about 1.1 0.1 C above pre-industriallevels.o 2015-2019 are the five warmest years onrecord, and 2010-2019 the warmest decadeon record.Global atmospheric concentrations of GHG:Average global atmospheric concentrations ofcarbon dioxide in 2018 had touched 407.8parts per million (ppm), which was 147% of preindustrial levels.o Whereas for methane (CH4) and nitrousoxide (N2O) it was 259% and 123% of preindustrial levels respectively.Sea ice: The year 2019 saw low sea-ice extent inboth the Arctic and the Antarctic.Sea level rise: In 2019, the global mean sealevel reached its highest value since thebeginning of the high-precision altimetryrecord (January 1993).Ocean acidification: Over the decade 2009–2018, the ocean absorbed around 23% of the8468022022annual CO2 emissions, lessening the increase inatmospheric concentrations. However, CO2absorbed in sea water decreases its pH, aprocess called ocean acidification.o Observations from open- ocean sourcesover the last 20 to 30 years show a cleardecrease in average pH at a rate of 0.017–0.027 pH units per decade since the late1980s.About WMO It is an intergovernmental organization with amembership of 193 Member States andTerritories. It is the specialized agency of the United Nationsfor meteorology (weather and climate),operational hydrology and related geophysicalsciences. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, andis a member of the United Nations DevelopmentGroup. Its supreme body is the World MeteorologicalCongress which is composed of all WMOMembers.Related news: High Mountain Summit Recently,TheWorldMeteorologicalOrganization (WMO) has convened a HighMountain Summit at its headquarters in Geneva The WMO organized HMS to foster high-leveldialogue and engage decision-makers and localactors to develop a roadmap to science-based,user-driven knowledge and information systemssupporting sustainable development and riskreduction in mountain and downstream regions.Related News: Recently, for the first time, global concentrationof carbon dioxide in the atmosphere havecrossed 415 parts per million (p

The nature and extent of the impact of the environment on any one company depends on the internal configuration of such a company. Researchers have categorized the environment into three components, the preparedness of any one company being referred to as the internal environment. These are the macro environment, the industry environment
