21-22 November National Conference: Building a Quality Aged Care Workforce &Financial Sustainability in Aged CareRecruiting and retaining staff in the aged care sector has been a notoriously difficult issue that continues toimpact the majority of aged care service providers. With an influx of baby boomers reaching retirement ageover the next few years, the demand for carers in aged care is expected to grow exponentially, with up to 1million required by 2050. The current shift towards consumer-directed care, new expectations for qualitycare and quality reform also add further pressure for aged care providers to ensure their staff are welltrained and able to meet these needs. How to improve financial sustainability and How to drive business model innovationEarly bird registrations until 7 September 2018Key members of the Taskforce, John Pollaers and Ian Yates, will be discussing their findings at the upcomingBuilding a Quality Aged Care Workforce Conference, developed in partnership with COTA, in Sydney on the21st & 22nd of November. The conference is a platform for sharing insights and methods to improve workforce development andincludes presentations from innovative providers and networking opportunities. For more information regarding the program andspeakers, as well as early bird registrationclick hereDate: 21-22 NovemberLocation: Rydges World Square, 389 Pitt StreetSydneyOrganiser: Criterion Conferences in partnershipwith COTAFor more information regarding the program andspeakers, as well as early bird registrationclick hereDate: 21-22 NovemberLocation: Rydges World Square, 389 Pitt StreetSydneyOrganiser: Criterion Conferences in partnership withCOTAPublished by Aged & Community Services Australia 22 August 2018 Page 3 of 6

10 October Webinar Epilepsy & Older Australians: What You Need to KnowOverviewEpilepsy is a neurological condition that involves recurring seizures which can greatly affect a person’sindependence and quality of life. It is the fourth most common neurological disorder after migraine, dementia and stroke. With an ageing population, the fastest growing segment of people living with epilepsyin Australia is those aged over 60 years. It is not easy to recognise epileptic seizures, and it is often even harder to recognise them in older people. The symptoms may go unnoticed and be mistakenly attributed to the ‘ageing process’, when in fact theperson needs medical intervention and individualised support from aged care workers.Date: 10 October, 2018Time: 12:00 - 1:00 pm AESTSpeaker: Epilepsy FoundationREGISTER HEREInsight into Abel Tasman Aged Care Village in Chester Hill - Life's a drag for Tackyand Paris - and the old folks love itAren't they beautiful?" whispers one elderly resident as she shuffles past with her walker."Hello, gorgeous!" shrieks Tacky Motel, one half of drag double act The Motel Sisters, catching sight of her.Immediately, the old lady's face creases into a smile of pure pleasure. Her day is made.Published by Aged & Community Services Australia 22 August 2018 Page 4 of 6

For the past two weeks, the Motel Sisters, with their high-voltage "celebrity" personas, have brought aunique jolt of peacock-coloured finery, fun and joy to Chester Hill's Abel Tasman Aged Care Village.Tacky, 190cm in heels and with long blonde tresses set off with eyelashes that should come with anengineering certificate is otherwise known as artist Liam Benson. Sidekick Paris (Naomi Oliver) is a petitecontrast beside her towering "sister", but more than makes up for it with her perfectly pitched Paris Hiltonparody and over-the-top personality. The pair, who met in art school, are halfway through a four-weekresidency at the aged-care home courtesy of Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE) a non-profit art andcommunity organisation based in Western Sydney. As part of the project, the "sisters" have their own rooms on the staff corridor ("Mine is like a drag queenexploded in there," says Tacky) and spend all day with the residents.Among the activities so far have been a hugely popular day spa, in which the home's hairdressing salon wastransformed with aromatherapy, facials, hand massages and nail sessions. "We just wanted to make peoplefeel really special and pampered," says Paris. There have been seated Zumba sessions, film-making, artprojects and endless cups of tea and chats."A lot of people here watch those TV shows," says Paris. "We go in with our room renovation sign and say'Would you like a room renovation?' "We focus on the people who don't leave their rooms. We show thema swatch of fabric and they can touch pillows and things." Alongside the tizzying up of rooms often comes amuch deeper connection."We've heard some amazing stories," says Tacky. "We know these people have lived long and incrediblyrich lives. So the room reno starts with 'how can we decorate' and ends with quite deep conversation and arelationship."Recently, the pair went to do a room makeover for one resident who is mostly blind and seemed verydepressed. "When she [Tacky] got close to her, she said 'I know that voice' and her face just lit up," saysParis. "She almost made me cry when she said, 'You're coming to see me?' "She was so happy. We spent awhile talking to her about her family and then asked what she would like us to do for her room."She said, 'I want a photo of us together and I'm going to treasure it forever'."Despite Abel Tasman having a strong Catholic element, residents have mostly received the pair positively."If someone feels it’s inappropriate or they feel threatened we back off," says Tacky. "We were never goingto force ourselves on anyone. It's been a case of open arms and saying 'Hey what do think of this. Want tohang out? "I like how people are excited to see us and they are like 'Ohmygod, girls!' but they are alsohappy to sit with us quietly and have a cup of tea. Like we've just become part of the community. We tellthem – we live here too."Pretty much everyone knows I'm a drag queen but everyone is cool with it and are just happy to tell ushow beautiful we look. Just us being around telling them, 'you are so beautiful we love you' is really niceand intimate and emotional."Sophia Markwell is clinical care manager at the home. Part of her role is to monitor mood and behaviour ofthe residents, many of whom have dementia. She has noticed much less wandering and agitation in thepast two weeks, and has not had to call for the specialist geriatrician to review medication in the time theMotel Sisters have been resident. "I think it is because they are having this interaction and something tolook forward to," she says.Published by Aged & Community Services Australia 22 August 2018 Page 5 of 6

Victoria Harbutt from ICE facilitated the offbeat project, and she is equally delighted with its success so far."I was sitting with one of the ladies and she leaned over and said, 'That's a man, right?' There was nojudgment," she says. "And then another lady was looking at Tacky and said, 'Biiig! Big for elegant!'"By Nick Galvin 19 August 2018 – Sydney Morning HeraldPhoto: Steven SiewertPublished by Aged & Community Services Australia 22 August 2018 Page 6 of 6
