A NEWSLETTER OF THE MIDTOWN GREENWAY COALITION“Our volunteers took light meters outinto the Greenway at night,” explainsJane St. Clair, a member of the MidtownGreenway Coalition’s board of directorsand the chairperson of its CrimePrevention Task Force. “We found thatmany areas were too dark according tonational trail standards.”Using the data collected by the CrimePrevention Task Force and crimestatistics from the Minneapolis PoliceDepartment, the Coalition prioritizedstairways and ramps between 5thAvenue and Cedar Avenue for thefirst round of new lights and securitycameras, as well as “This Area UnderSurveillance” signs. Once those rampsand stairways have safety upgradesinstalled, the Coalition will ask the Cityto make safety improvements in otherareas of the Greenway too.WhittierLyndalecontinued on page 4The Coalition is also testing out a plan tohire off-duty police officers to occasionallypatrol the Greenway at night. “Whilewe don’t have the budget to hire themfrequently, we like the idea of partneringeven closer with the MinneapolisPolice Department at times to patrolthe Greenway late at night,” said SorenJensen, the Coalition’s executive director.“They already pay close attention to theGreenway and patrol it regularly, but thisprogram will allow us to really focus onpotential problem areas late at night.”While it might seem unrelated at first, theCoalition also believes that a streetcar inthe Greenway will help prevent crime bybringing more “eyes to the Greenway.”(Read more about the potential Greenwaystreetcar in this newsletter.)continued on page 4PhCANDOilplisWestranoFixit bike repairrcostation in theCGreenway, donatedrnby DERO bikeohracks. 2Message from the EXECUTIVE dIRECTORDear Friends of the Greenway,As a nonprofit organization with asmall staff, we rely on hundreds ofvolunteers to help us accomplish ourmission of protecting and enhancingthe Midtown Greenway. No groupof volunteers more exemplifies acommitment to our mission thanour nightly Trail Watch volunteers, who donate huge amounts of timeto patrolling the Greenway. Even in the colder months, whenthey could be snug at home, they put on their biking gear andhead out to patrol. The Greenway is a safer place for all of usbecause of their dedication.Speaking of Trail Watch, we were pleased to recently honortwo Trail Watch Leaders with our 2013 Tim SpringerGreenway Champion Award, which recognizes our topvolunteers. Congratulations to Mark Ambroe and KathyKoch for being our winners this year!We also have wonderful GreenSpace volunteers plantinggardens; ArtSpace volunteers working to get more art into theGreenway; and many volunteers coordinating events like theGreenway Glow & Northern Spark on the Greenway (June14, 2014). For information on how you can volunteer, pleasevisit our website at www.midtowngreenway.org.As we near the end of another great year on the Greenway,I’d like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers, as well asour many members, who make our work on behalf of theGreenway possible. Thank you!See you on the Greenway!Soren R. JensenExecutive DirectorOne of our newer volunteer efforts is our Crime PreventionTask Force, which has been meeting with governmentofficials to advocate for safety enhancements in the Greenway.Their efforts are paying off, with commitments from cityofficials to install better lighting, signs, and cameras in thecorridor. Our Improvements Committee volunteers work on a varietyof land-use and transportation issues, including our effortsto get a turf-track streetcar into the Greenway. Whilethere are many great reasons to support a streetcar in thecorridor, one of the major ones is that it will enhance safetyby bringing more “eyes on the Greenway,” especially at night.(A final decision on whether a streetcar will be selected forthe Greenway is expected soon. Please check the Coalition’sFacebook page and website for updates.)WHO WE AREThe Midtown Greenway Coalition is a coalitionof neighborhoods and individuals who love theMidtown Greenway. We’re the organizationthat got the Greenway built by public agencies, and now we work to protect and enhance it.We grow stronger with each new member.Join us to help protect YOUR Greenway andmake it even better!Midtown Greenway Coalition Board MembersThe Coalition board of directors consists of one seat for each of the 17 neighborhoods along the Lake Street-MidtownCorridor, and four at-large seats.Matt BeckmanGabriel HoffmanNolan PetersonKelly WilderCameron ConwayDeborah KermeenGeorge PuzakMichael WilsonLongfellow CommunityCouncilCARAGJanet CourtPowderhorn ParkNeighborhood AssociationJohn DeWittSeward NeighborhoodGroupEast Isles ResidentsAssociationMargaret KirkpatrickEast Phillips ImprovementCoalitionProspect Park East RiverRoad ImprovementAssociationJo Ann MusumeciAmanda DlouhyLyndale NeighborhoodAssociationPhillips West NeighborhoodOrganizationCentral Area NeighborhoodDevelopment OrganizationAt LargeHarry SavageMidtown PhillipsNeighborhood AssociationCedar Isles DeanNeighborhood AssociationMargaret WunderlichAt LargeMorgan ZehnerLake Street CouncilEast Calhoun CommunityOrganizationAaron ShafferWhittier AllianceWest CalhounNeighborhood CouncilMichael NelsonJane St. ClairCorcoran NeighborhoodOrganizationFor a list of board members’ rolesand responsibilities, visitwww.Midtowngreenway.Org. 3Survey Builds Dialoguefor Improved Transit in the Midtown CorridorRebecca Harnik, Program CoordinatorWe’ve spent the past summer offeringa transit survey to build dialoguearound the Midtown Corridor (Transit)Alternatives Analysis to engage localcommunities in the transit planningprocess. We received nearly 400responses to our survey, which was alsooffered in Spanish. The surveys asked community membersabout their transit habits and concerns, including: What do you love about living orworking in the Midtown Corridor? If you don’t use Lake street, whynot? If you don’t use the Greenway, whynot?Several major themes came forth:1. Frustration with Lake Street trafficNo surprise to any of us, manyrespondents found Lake Street traffic tobe sluggish, congested, and frustrating.2. SafetyCommunity members expressedsignificant concerns with safety: a thirdof respondents mentioned discomfortwith being on the Greenway aloneat night, as well as with biking andwalking on Lake Street. The Midtown Greenway is actually arelatively safe place, with just a fewincidences of serious crime annually.Nonetheless, its stillness at nighttimecan be a deterrent for users. AStreetcar’s presence will improve feelingsof safety for trail users, as it wouldadd ‘eyes on the Greenway’ throughincreased trail use.The Midtown Greenway Coalition’s vision for a streetcar in theGreenway (at Irving Avenue).¶3. The Park-like atmosphere of theGreenwayWhile the Greenway is officially a railtransit corridor owned by the HennepinCounty Regional Railroad Authority, many respondents commented on theuniqueness of the green space in thecorridor. They appreciate the trail’sbeauty, particularly in contrast to thebustle of Lake Street, just a block away. This is why we are emphaticallyadvocating for green spaces in thepotential Greenway streetcar design, including embedding the rails in turf/grass. In fact, if Metro Transit isunwilling to include a turf track in theirplans, the Midtown Greenway Coalitionmay be forced to oppose the streetcarline. Development must work to reinforcethe park-like atmosphere of the trail, which is one of the reasons it was recentlyrecognized as the top urban bike trail inthe nation.4. The diverse amenities of LakeStreet and the GreenwaySurvey takers loved the accessibilityand vibrancy of options along LakeStreet, all within such a short distanceof the Midtown Greenway. Communitymembers love opportunities for shopping, dining, working, recreating, and living inthe corridor; proximity to the trail offersa convenient, quiet, and safe option formoving across town to these amenities.A streetcar could capitalize on theseopportunities, while helping knit togetherthe neighborhood to improve connectivitybetween Lake Street and the Greenway. To read more about our survey resultsand stay updated on Metro Transit’slatest projections for the AlternativesAnalysis, ams/transit-advocacy/MISSIONMISIÓNWe empower communities to develop, improve, protect, and enjoy the Midtown Greenway as a greenurban pathway to improve people’s lives.Nosotros habilitamos a las comunidades a desarrollar, mejorar, proteger y disfrutar del sendero urbano MidtownGreenway para mejorar la vida de la gente.

4Greenway Safety — continued from page 1Midtown GreenwayCoalition StaffAll Greenway users can also help prevent crime, according toJensen. “While crime is low, we do have 2-3 reported assaults peryear on average, out of more than 1 million bike trips taken. We’dof course like assaults to be zero, but it’s going to take help fromGreenway users.”Soren Jensen, Executive Director612-879-0105 Soren@midtowngreenway.orgRebecca Harnik, Program Coordinator612-879-0106 Rebecca@midtowngreenway.orgFor example, Jensen stressed that Greenway users should not“power through” groups of young people loitering in the corridor atnight. “Instead, stop, turn around, and call 911 when you are clear,”he said. “Let the police decide what the group is up to. The morewe call 911 to report any suspicious activity, the safer the Greenwaywill be for everyone.”A BIG THANKS to our LVC memberJackie Blair, and our summer intern JaneyGengel, who have both moved on; weappreciate all of your hard work for theorganization! For more information about the Coalition’s Crime PreventionTask Force or Trail Watch safety patrol, please visit www.midtowngreenway.org or contact rebecca@midtowngreenway.org.DERO — continued from page 1VOLUNTEERstations in the Greenway, one near theKennilworth Trail and the other nearColfax Ave.TRAIL WATCH?The Fixits include all the toolsnecessary to perform basic repairs andmaintenance, from changing flat tiresto adjusting brakes and derailleurs. The tools and air pump are securelyattached to the stand with steel cablesand tamper-proof fasteners. 5TRACKING THEGREENWAY STREETCARRebecca Harnik, Program CoordinatorIn late November, Metro Transit unveiled project updatesfor transit improvements in the Midtown Corridor. Theseupdates revealed ridership data for the corridor, projectcosts, travel times, equity studies, and other impacts. Theanalysis continues to examine a streetcar in the Greenway;an enhanced bus on Lake Street; or a combination of both.Metro Transit’s original draft for the streetcar linelacked sensitivity to the Greenway, designed from arail operations perspective and excluding the trail userexperience. The design featured a significant amount ofdouble-track rail and lengthy retaining walls, carvingaway the historic slope and compromising the quality ofthe trail. The Midtown Greenway Coalition has supported astreetcar in the Greenway, as well as the combination ofboth enhanced bus (on Lake Street) and the streetcar. However, we believe the Greenway streetcar must bedesigned in a context-sensitive way, respecting the greencorridor that contains the nation’s best urban bike trail. After continued conversations with the GreenwayCoalition and others, Metro Transit put out a secondoption for the Greenway: a rail line that is embeddedin turf (grass) track; an additional mile of single-track;and dramatically reduced concrete walls along the line.We were very pleased with many ideas from this draft.Nonetheless, we continue to advocate for more singletrack, stations that are planned within the context of theirneighborhoods, and trail aesthetics.A turf-track streetcar in Munich, similar to what theMidtown Greenway Coalition is seeking for the ivbloomington13th12thpi.r11thipw38thy.lake st.wpkhahaneminMidtownExchange34thBike Center andCoalition Officesissachicagoissthwacolumbusmhiapark10th¶We continue to work with Metro Transit on these issues.Meanwhile, community feedback is also a necessity as theanalysis continues -- we encourage you to stay engagedon the Midtown Greenway Coalition website and socialmedia pages, as well as Metro Transit’s page to viewdetailed project documents: www.midtowntransitway.org.
