Volume XXXVIII, March 2015James Snyder, EditorWindy City Z Club OfficersTHE PRESIDENT SEZTy Ozgen, PresidentWhat a great month we had inFebruary. Yeah, rumor has it thatit was one of the coldest monthson record but that certainly did not keep our club fromkeeping busy with events. When you really thinkabout it, we went from one extreme, brand new cars atthe Chicago Auto Show, to the other extreme, oldercars in need of restoration at Bennett Coachworks. What a contrast, all within a couple weeks of eachother. That’s our club!!Our annual outing to the Chicago Auto Show onMonday the 16th was sponsored by Jay Weinberger atContinental Nissan. Hehas been doing this for usfor many years. ThanksJay!! Your graciousnessis always appreciated. Ifyou recall, we usually gothe first Monday of theshow as it tends to be lesscrowded compared to theweekends but thisparticular Monday fell onPresidents Day and youknow what thatmeans .no school. Boy was it crowded!!! Familieswith kids all over the place. Don’t get me wrong, Ihave a family as well, just not with me that night. As aresult, it was somewhat difficult to get to the cars oreven sit in them. Oh well. It still had a nice timethough. I thought Nissan had a nice display, perhaps abit more exciting than previous years. As you knowthey had the NISMO Z Roadster concept on displaywhich was just beautiful. If you recall, I was talkingabout the NISMO coupe that I saw at ContinentalNissan last month. To be honest though, I think thecoupe has nicer lines. Anyway it was roped off to keepthe people from damaging it but I was no ordinaryindividual. With a smile, I mentioned that I was thewww.windycityzclub.comPresident – Ty Ozgen 630.910.3616VP of Activities – Jeff Pleiter 630.832.7857VP of Administration – Pat Sylvester 847.895.6939Secretary/Membership – Sue Chan 630.379.6917Treasurer – Bill Bragg 262.697.1779Newsletter – James Snyder wczc.editor@gmail.comWebmeister – Glenn Johnson 630.363.2081CEO of the Windy City Z Club and asked if I could getcloser to it, not to sit in it but to get my picture takenwith. Now most guys would want to take their picturewith the pretty models displaying the cars but me, giveme the roadster .with the model in the passenger seat.Like I said, family was at home. I did get the picturewith the NISMO roadster, passenger seat empty, yep, being President has itsprivileges. Judging from thecrowd, I am sure Nissan willsell it. The new Pathfinder alsocaught my eye. Did you see theinterior of it? Very classy!Nissan's luxury brand, Infinitihad quite a few cars on display.Again, the nomenclature is soconfusing. Why did they notleave the G37 a G37, and not aQ60 or was it QX60, or Q40.Hmmm.Bob Bennett of Bennett’s Coachwork was in topform as he gave us the tour of his shop. It seemed likeevery car there had a story behind it and if you were atthe last WCZC Birthday party, you know that he is agood story teller. He had all sorts of cars there invarious states of repair, from total restorations tomodifications. As he promised, he had several Z’sthere. Of course they were 240Zs, being the morecollectible of the Z family and the oldest. I recall oneof them he mentioned they were doing just a “nicedriver” restoration on it but boy the paint lookedConcours to me! It is so exciting that these Z’s arereally becoming collectible in the car community. Somy fellow club members with those earlier Z’s, keepVolume XXXVIII, March 2015page 1

them as they are certainly going to appreciate.Interestingly, many of the cars were being restoredfor sentimental reasons. Perhaps it was a late familymembers car that the family wished to restore (therewas a 1971 Ford Torino Cobra and a older VW Beetlethat the family was restoring because of that.) or it wasa car similar to what they grew up with and they justhad to have one. (I think Ken Jamin has a story likethat with his 280Z). Every once in a while you readthose stories about a person who sold a collectible caronly to purchase it back after several years of huntingfor it. You see my friends, cars are not just a mode oftransportation. To people like you and me, they aremuch more. They become a part of us, a part of thefamily.I have 3 cars that are actually like family. My ’71Ford LTD convertible was my first car. My late fatherbought this for me. I still remember going toIndianapolis to look at it with him and buying ittogether. I’ve had it since high school and all my highschool and college friends know about it. When we gettogether, they sometimes ask about it, just like theywould ask about my brother or sister. My 1983280ZXT 2 2 is my first Z, having had it since 1987when I was going into residency. I needed a car to getaround the city to different hospitals and the Ford waswww.windycityzclub.comjust not practical and sat at home in the garage. Mylate mom bought that one for me. I remember drivingto Niles with my brother and her to buy that. I drovethat car everywhere, in the snow and salt, all yearround. I just love that car! The weather and salt didtake its toll on the body and I was starting to get rust onjust about every panel. My 3rd permanent familymember is the 1990 300ZX TT. This was the first car Iever bought with my own money with my first job. Bythe way, I did pay my mother for the ‘83 over time. When I bought the ’90, I thought about trading in my’83 but I was not getting much as a trade so I kept it. Idid not use it much after that but decided to get itcosmetically restored in 1995 at the old Ultimate Z. Ihad a new hood, 2 new fenders, 2 new quarter panels, and 2 rust free doors from Arizona put on it. Was itworth it? You bet! I love driving it, T tops off, listening to the straight 6 humm. Life is good. Mostrestorations cost more than what the car is worth but tothe owner, it is worth it. I have gotten years of pleasurefrom it and I hope to keep all 3 for a long long time.Speaking of sentimental things, we lost a legend inthe Z community last month. Yutaka Katayama, aka MrK, passed at the ripe age of 105. I am fortunate to havemet him a few times at the National Conventions andeven have signed owners manuals from him. Believe itor not, he even visited us here in Chicago several yearsago. We had a reception for him at the O'hare Hiltonand brought him up to the Z Zone at Road Americawhere he got a chance to tour the track in one of ourmembers 240Z. He had such a smile on his face. Hewas a very humble person and will be missed. May herest in peace. TyJeff Pleiter, V.P of ActivitiesWe had a good turnout of 17 Z clubmembers at Bennett Coachworks inMilwaukee. Thanks again to Bob Bennettfor providing a tour of his shop. Bobwalked us through pretty much every projecthe had going on. There were quite a few firstgeneration Zs in his shop in various states of repairVolume XXXVIII, March 2015page 2

and/or restoration. He also showed us an original alloriginal barn find Scarab 240Z. For those that don’tknow, there was a California company dropping 327Chevy V-8s in the Z and doing other various upgrades. All parts were there were there, it needed some TLC,but it was very cool. The co-owners were there also togive us the story of the car. Bob also told us about thevarious other cars there.A Yenko Camaro clone indistinguishable from anoriginal, Beetle convertible, pickup hot rods, 57 Chevy, etc. If you are a member of Facebook, you couldfollow us as we went through the shop on that day as Iwas posting photo on the WCZC Facebook page.Check out our website for more photos, as a picturewas worth a thousand words. Now I just need to figurewhat is the best day to bring my car up there. Also, congratulations to Robert Cooper for takinghome the trophy for Best Nissan at Tuner Galleria.Next WCZC Meeting Date is April 12, 2015.We will be meeting again at Buona Beef on Armywww.windycityzclub.comTrail Road at 6 pm.
