WATERPROOFINGLEAK SEALING SOLUTIONSWITH SIKA INJECTION SYSTEMSFOR CONCRETE, MASONRY AND NATURAL STONE STRUCTURES

LEAK SEALING SOLUTIONSFor concrete, masonry and natural stone structuresLEAKING CONCRETE STRUCTURES BELOW GROUND such as basements and civil engineeringstructures, can have a greatly reduced service life due to steel corrosion and concrete damage, inaddition to any reduced functionality and use. In order to avoid the expensive costs of repairs to thestructure, or to water damaged interior finishing’s, furnishings or other goods, plus the costs of anyoperational downtime, these leaks can often be securely sealed and waterproofed by injection.Sika provides an extensive range of injection systems for all types of leak sealing applications inconcrete, masonry and natural stone structures. These can be used at any time, including during theinitial construction works, or later to extend the service life during any subsequent refurbishment, according to the specific project’s requirements. Sika injection systems can not only close, flexiblybridge, seal and make leaking structures watertight for the long term, some can also be used toincrease or restore structural integrity and load bearing capacity, thereby providing complete anddurable maintenance solutions.Sika's high performance injection materials are also fully compatible with Sika’s complete Engineered Waterproofing range and they can be used for the repair and sealing of cracks, voids, joints, hoses and compartment systems in many different structures. As a prerequisite, all of Sika’s injection products are also fully tested and conform to all of the relevant global standards.

SUCCESSFUL WATERPROOFINGWITH SIKA INJECTION SYSTEMSThere are three primary success factors involved in ensuring the effectiveness and durability of injection works. It is essentialthat the right combination of injection materials, injection equipment and injection method must be selected and this is whatSika’s extensive technical and practical experience provides:INJECTION MATERIALThe selection of the right injection material and indeed the rightspecific injection product for the defined project requirements isthe first key factor for success. This especially means the materials viscosity, flexibility and behaviour in contact with water thatcan all significantly influence the effectiveness of the injection.MaterialINJECTION EQUIPMENTAppropriate equipment for the selected injection material, including for the correct preparation, mixing and delivery of thematerial is the second key success factor. This means everythingfrom the initial dosage and mixing, through delivery from a suitable pump, to use of the right packers/ports/connectors.SuccessfulInjection withSika SolutionsEquipmentMethod/ApplicationINJECTION METHOD / APPLICATIONThirdly, the correct injection method and application techniquesmust be used by trained, competent and experienced contractors, in order to ensure the success and provide complete andpermanent leak sealing solutionsADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES OF SIKACOMPLETE SIKA SOLUTIONSSika is a ‘full range’ supplier, which means that Sika not onlyhas the full range of alternative injection technologies andmaterials, but we are also the world’s leading supplier of engineered waterproofing, concrete repair and protection solutions in order to prevent, or to seal and waterproof, any typesof leaks in your structure – from the ‘Basement to the Roof.’SIKA INJECTION SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL STANDARDSSika’s injection solutions are tested and approved to theleading global standards to provide safe and reliable injectionsolutions.TECHNICAL EXPERTISE AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCESika provides advice and support from the design officethrough to completion of the injection and any associatedworks on site. INJECTION MATERIAL TECHNOLOGIES ANDSIKA INJECTION PRODUCTSPOLYURETHANE FOAM RESINSPolyurethane foaming resins are designed to expand with water to temporarily blockthe passage of water through the crack or void . Their fast expansive reaction with waterforms a tough and flexible / elastic foam. For permanent waterproofing, these polyurethane foaming resins are re-injected with a suitable non-foaming injection resin – usuallyalso based on polyurethane as below.POLYURETHANE RESINSPolyurethane resins are hydrophobic, flexible and used for the non-structural injectionsealing and waterproofing of voids, cracks and joints. Their low viscosity allows good penetration into the concrete structure to seal the leaks and achieve a durable elastic seal.Polyurethane resins seal with very good edge adhesion to concrete and their hydrophobiccharacteristics. In voids, cracks and joints with high wateringress, pre-injection as temporary waterstopping with a Polyurethane foaming resin asmentioned above is required.ACRYLATE RESINSAcrylate resins are hydrophilic, very flexible and used for non-structural injections ofcracks, joints and voids, including for injection hose systems, compartment systemsand area (e.g. Grid and Curtain) injection works. For application Acrylate resins have aextremely low viscosity (similar to water) and therefore have ideal penetration abilities.Their reaction (hardening) time is also adjustable, which allows flexibility in adaptationof the injection material to the prevailing conditions on site (e.g. temperature and injection distance etc.). Acrylate resin based materials seal and waterproof leaks through theirhydrophilic swelling behaviour in contact with water. The injection equipment is also easilycleaned with water.EPOXY RESINSEpoxy resins have relatively high tensile and compressive strengths in relation to concrete, they are generally regarded as ‘rigid’ materials and widely used for structural repairs byinjections of cracks and voids in load bearing reinforced concrete structures or elements.Their low viscosity allows excellent penetration into cracks in the structure and this alsohelps to ensure permanent and durable load transfer based on their excellent adhesion tothe concrete. Epoxy resin based materials are suitable for many different structural injection requirements and applications in dry and slightly damp.MICROFINE CEMENT SUSPENSIONMicrofine cement suspensions are non-flexible and therefore non-movement accommodating, rigid, polymer modified, injection materials (also often known as Microfine cementgrouts), which are based on blends microfine cements. They are now widely used for structural injection works to seal non-moving cracks, voids and daywork joints for example.Due to their polymer modification, these cement based materials can also have high flowcharacteristics and very good penetration ability.6WATERPROOFINGINJECTION SOLUTIONS

EQUIPMENT FOR SIKA INJECTIONMATERIALSINJECTION PUMP TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL WATERPROOFINGThere are two different pump technologies available on the market today for resin and microfine cement injection, there are 1and 2-component pumps. The most widely used are the 1- or single component pumps, which have the key advantage of beingavailable for a much lower cost, and so the contractor’s investment is a fraction of what it would be for a 2- or two componentpump. The main reason that 2-component pumps are still used is that they are the best and in fact the only way to inject fastand very fast curing resins, because of their extremely short pot-life; plus they are best for injecting large volumes of material.SINGLE-COMPONENT PUMPS:The storage container of the pump is filled with the pre-mixedresin or microfine cement grout. The pot-life of this injectionmaterial starts after mixing and it is always necessary to apply the complete mixed volume within the relevant pot-life.There are hand, piston and diaphragm pumps available using1-component pump technologies and they are designed to accommodate and handle small or medium volumes of injectionmaterial.TWO-COMPONENT PUMPS:These have two storage containers and each container is filledseparately with a different component; with the componentsonly coming together when they are pumped through thestatic mixer. The pot-life therefore starts in the static mixerand so this kind of pump can be used for very fast reactingresin based materials. There are 2-component pumps designed specifically for each ofthe different resin technologies available, which is due to theirdiffering viscosity, mixing ratio and reaction time etc., as wellas for different types of applications. For fast-gelling acrylateor polyacrylate resins as they are also known, a separate rinsingpump is recommended to be used for cleaning the pump andstatic mixer. There are also 2-component piston pumps available which cansuccessfully inject medium to high volumes of 2-componentPU or epoxy resins, even against high hydrostatic pressure.Single-componentpumpPolyurethaneFoam ResinsSika Injection-101 RCSika Injection-107XPolyurethaneResinsSika Injection-201 CEXAcrylateResinsSika Injection-307/-310XSika Injection-30410XVacuum pumpColloidal MixerXXEpoxyResinsSikadur -52Sika Injection-458XMicrofineCementSika InjectoCem -190XWATERPROOFINGINJECTION SOLUTIONSTwo-componentpump (Acrylate)XX
