Biking BusinessSkip’s Western OutfittersBy LuluIf you haven’t shopped Skip’s Western Outfitters locatedoff International Speedway in Daytona Beach, youare missing out on a boot superstore. Specializing inWestern apparel, boots, and hats, they also have a hugeselection of Harley boots. This store has over 15,000boots with lines including Ariat, Lucchese, Roper andCorral to name a few and of course Harley! I havenever seen so many cowboy hats anywhere. The hatline includes some of the finest, Resistol, Stetson andCharlie 1 Horse. Skip’s was established in 1979 andhas been adding to the lines they carry and their squarefootage over the last 40 years.I got a special birthday surprise when T. J. arrangedfor me to go in to take photos during Bike Week ofthe store and shoppers to my surprise I was one ofthe shoppers! Devin and T.J. told me to pick out myfavorite pair and after trying on many different stylesand brands, I went for comfort and bling ending upwith a pair of blue and red Luchese Corral squaretoed cowboy boots. I happen to be a boot collector sothere couldn’t be a bettersurprise for me! Alongwith the largest selectionof boots, they also havebelts, jewelry, clothing, sunglasses, and gifts. Asecond location in Osteenmay be more convenient toyou but when you are overin the Daytona area yousimply must stop in to seethis Western megastore. My birthdayboots!Their online shopping is atSkipsBoots.com.THUNDER ROADSSTAFFLETTER FROMTHE EDITORTHUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE FLORIDAP.O. Ihave been anxiously awaiting word from GovernorDeSantis letting us know when we can expect tostart returning to real life. In the meantime, ThunderRoads Florida Magazine will print a smaller magazinefor lack of advertisers. The majority of our ad clientsare bars and restaurants and since they are closedthere is nothing to advertise. That being said, this 32page issue is packed full of the recent Daytona BikeWeek events coverage and more Bike Week articleswill also appear in the June issue. It was a successfulevent until the last minute Corona cancellation, butthere was still lots to report on, so enjoy the memories, and if you weren’t in attendance, get excited forBiketoberfest in the fall. I had a special treat thisyear when a few longtime friends from back home inMassachusetts showed up to ride and party with us.Even had to pick up Annie on the bikes and ride tothe house with a suitcase. That was a first. You maynotice their ugly mugs on more pages than usual as. On a seriousthey followed us all over the placenote, we miss our riding friends and local bike nights, although, I must say that my liver appreciates thestay at home lockdown LOL. We’re hoping that thiscraziness is over in May and we can resume normalmagazine activity in June. Looking ahead to Laconia(fingers crossed) and then Sturgis in August. Here’shoping that everyone is healthy, staying safe andCorona free.CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERSLuLu, Deborah Speicher, Ron Cox, Sherry Fletcher, Phoenix & Metric,Raven Vanpelt, Bear, Christine Fourman, Dave Twichell, T. PONY TALESBy LuLuWow, we have just been living through the most bizarre period in the history of our country! Everyone on lockdown in their homes. Only essential workers can earn a living. A crazy governor in Michigan not allowing youto buy paint or seeds at Wal-Mart even if you are there buying groceries. People dying in nursing homes andyou must wonder how did they even get exposed? Through all this, our clients in Florida that own barsand restaurants are at best, able to serve food curbside or by delivery. Most bike dealerships are downto doing service and parts. In every walk of life business has been brought to a standstill. Parents aretrying to teach their kids stuff they do not even understand themselves as class work is being done atkitchen tables. Greg Gutfeld on FOX News Channel was making a funny observation today, stating thatit will be a shock to the education system if at the end of the summer kids complete a years’ worth ofstudy in 3 months and with better GPA’s. We all want our routines back, as well as the freedom to goabout our normal lives again. BUT we also want to be healthy, so as good Americans we have sufferedthrough this Covid purgatory to the best of our ability. I beg all of us to pay attention in our shoppingand spending when this is over to BUY AMERICAN products. Write to your legislators demanding thatwe bring our drug production back inside our borders. I had no idea that most of our antibiotics werebeing produced in China did you? Smithfield Foods has supposedly been bought by China. I will notbe buying their products! I also found out that wild caught frozen fish is being processed in China too. What the hell? I am not a conspiracy believer but I have a hard time believing that people eatingbats caused this to spread across the globe and kill so many people particularly people locked up innursing homes!Getting OUT atTHE DOG HOUSEIn Port Orange, the total rebirth of The Dog House wasevident during Bike Week 2020. Every time we were on theproperty the place was packed. Rhonda and her crew haveput a huge amount of energy into making this a great destination all year long, but especially during Bike Week withbands like Confederate Railroad and Molly Hatchet gracingtheir stage. We helped a bit with the fun and threw a littleTwisted Tea event with Baby Bottle sucking of Twisted Teaand giveaways during their kickoff party. Bill Grotto and thebeautiful Twisted Tea promo girls loved meeting the folks atThe Dog House. Plans when this corona thing passes is tohave a weekly bike night and rumor has it, they will be having live music and 1 longnecks. The great back yard withcovered porch and huge inside bar allows for seating nomatter the weather. Let’s get on our bikes and visit the crewat The Dog House as soon as we can!One final wish as we open our state back up, is that we can get our magazine back on course pleasesupport our ad clients they have all been hurt by this pandemic that crippled our country. Get on your bike and visit our ad clients, hit abike night or two, visit a dealership or bike shop and make a purchase. Tip your bartenders and waitresses a little extra knowing that theyhave been without income for an extended period. I don’t have a crystal ball and have no idea if, with this May issue, our state will beopened back up in some capacity, but we can only hope.Stay healthy, call a friend to check on them. Some are very isolated. Main Street Station’s 2020MISS TWISTED TEA CONTESTBy LuluBike Week 2020 ended up chaos for the barsand vendors on Main Street. Just by an amazingstroke of luck. Phaedra Lee scheduled the MissTwisted Tea bikini contest the first weekendof Bike Week and it was packed and went offwithout a hitch. Usually the contest falls the lastSunday and would have been shut down due tothe ridiculous Corona lock down that the mayordecided could not wait for one more day. Duringthe contest photographers were snapping away, bartenders were slinging drinks and Twisted Teaat an amazing pace keeping the crowd happy. The beautiful 2020 Twisted Tea Bike for theirannual giveaway was revealed on stage. Chrisand the peeps from Cycle Source were on handand see the ad inside to find out how to registerto enter. Each girl on stage was adorable in herown right and I would have hated to be a judge! Please do not forget as things open after thiscorona nightmare the huge Wednesday BikeNights with live music and 1 longnecks.14 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com MAY 2020Winner!MAY 2020 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com 15

CABBAGE PATCHBIKE WEEK 2020By LuluVendors, bike shows, booze, Budweiser, bands, andgirls slopping around in oil and cabbage make CabbagePatch a must do during Bike Week. Even the BudweiserClydesdales had more fun at the Patch than any otherstop they made, as in the open field they were able tocanter a bit. I love Radical Randy and always make thetrip out to the Patch just to snap a shot or two of thegreat looking bikes that show up for a chance at takinghome a trophy! Had to buy a couple of the awesomeblinged out bandanas from Michelle and I always stopin to see Scott Demonico’s “Rally Leather” tent. Onthat subject please, please make sure you support thevendors as soon as the rally schedule opens back up,these peeps make their living traveling from state tostate and so much of their income was lost due to thecorona virus shutting down Leesburg, Thunder Beach,Myrtle Beach and possibly even Laconia at the time ofthis writing. Coleslaw wrestling and all the fun that goeson with that was able to go on since Samsula was noton the closure list during the shutdown. Make sure toride out all year long to visit Cabbage Patch Bar. Ronnieand Roger Luznar work hard to put the rally party on attheir property but all year they are open and love to seeyou ride in!

Riding Putnam CountyBy LuluAs soon as we get out of Coronalock down, we will all want to feelthe wind in our faces. Take a rideout to the country and tour PutnamCounty, about a 45-minute ride toopen highways and great wateringholes. Renegade’s on the River isthe mac daddy with a huge tiki barright on the St. John’s river. Donnieand Lisa King, with the help of theirhardworking daughter Stacy, John, and the crew work hard to keep upwith the crowds that find themselveson barstools at their spot. The cabins,RV spots and water access make itaccessible for all. If you have not triedtheir Gator you simply must! Next stopis almost across the street. The RiverPub, owned and operated by Bobbyand Monique, is known for great foodand impeccable service. Ice cold beerand full liquor too awaits. Our friendsTonya and Waylon have Long’s LogCabin in Welaka. A nonsmoking barnow, they do have seating outsideand are full liquor and food now.A new ad client with us is Hermit’sCove, another waterfront spot locatedin Satsuma. This is by far the ultimatedive bar!!! Stop in and Say hi to Garyand Pam. It is beer and wine only, butthey have outside theater seating forwatching the river flow by. Last stopis in Palatka with a stop at Amy andDonnie’s 3-D Saloon. We just love thishard-working couple. Full liquor andsome of the best original live musicfrom time to time.22 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com APRIL 2020BROKEN SPOKE 2020By LuluI have lots of favorites for Bike Week. But my favorite spotto just sit and watch the show whether it is great bands likeHairball, bike shows almost daily, minibike races, or justpeople watching is the Broken Spoke Saloon. The ownershave made this into a Disney atmosphere with sparklingwhite lights in the massive oaks, saddles swings, free peanuts, swinging smoking hot bartenders or the most buffed upmale bartender in the world, this is just the perfect locationfor chilling! Famous Jay Allen emcees the entire Bike Weekand thankfully they were spared early closure for the coronavirus by the Ormond hierarchy. Look for them to open againduring Biketoberfest!APRIL 2020 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com 23

Boot Hill Saloon & Boot Hill OutpostBike Week History & New BeginningsBy LuluWhat a crazy Bike Week 2020. Boot Hill Saloon, the most historic bar for Bike Week partying had to endure the ridiculous closing on thelast Saturday of Bike Week costing the bar, bartenders, bands, and vendors dearly at their Main Street location. Luckily their new hot spotBoot Hill Outpost, which they have worked hard to make a nice drinking spot on US 1 in Ormond Beach, was able to remain open for theentire event as only the mayor of Daytona Beach closed things down less than 48 hours before the whole thing would have been overanyway, while the rest of the county was business as usual. Please spend your drinking dollars all year long with our ad clients. Boot Hillhas a Wednesday night bike night with live music. They have great live music 6 days a week at the Main Street location. Stop in and seethe Boot Hill Outpost with a beautiful new outside deck, new pavement and nicely redone inside! If Laconia is not cancelled and you areriding up, stop in and have a few at Boot Hill up there.24 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com APRIL 2020APRIL 2020 ThunderRoadsFlorida.com 25
