Welcome to the 2017 Hamilton Fringe FestivalWe are celebrating our 14th season in great company: 50 production companies– the highest number ever – will stage over 400 performances over 11 days inHamilton’s downtown core. We are pleased to invite you to join the party. We appreciate the time that you spend attending Fringe shows and our eventsand trust you will have lots to communicate before, during and after the festival.Media PassesAt each show that you attend, you will need to show your Media Pass, some formof identification, and a Fringe Backer Button. Please ensure that you arrive at thevenue in good time, as no latecomers will be admitted to Fringe shows. The passis non-transferrable and valid for one ticket per show. Hold onto your BackerButton! If it gets lost, you will need to purchase another for 5.00 (available atany venue box office).Media passes will be available at the Theatre Aquarius Box Office throughout thefestival. You can pick up your passes in advance at the Media Desk at theLincoln Alexander Centre, before the Official Hamilton Fringe Festival Kick-Off onJuly 19, 2017.Taking PhotosUnless prior permission is granted by the theatre company, taking photos orvideo is not permitted during any performance. Please contact the Publicist toarrange photo sessions, or to obtain production stills that the Festival has on filefor each company.Reserving TicketsAlthough not mandatory, it is recommended that media reserve seats ahead oftime through publicity@hamiltonfringe.ca. If you are booking seats, please do soat least 24-hours in advance of the show.

ConductAs this is a short festival, it is most beneficial to the participating artists if Fringereviews or stories are posted early on in the run and/or as soon as possible afterthe performance. Fringe artists make use of their reviews to generate audiencesfor their shows, so if you are able to see the productions during the openingweekend and post reviews soon after, this is greatly appreciated. We know that not all writers have control over editorial space. However, if youwant to see a show and do not intend to produce a review or story, we ask thatyou purchase your ticket. One hundred per cent (100%) of box office revenuesgo to the artists, and we want to enjoy and respect their talents as professionals.Artists receive a list of all media who attend each of their performances so theywill be checking in with us (and with you!) to see when their reviews appear. The Hamilton Fringe Festival reserves the right to revoke media passes forany reason, including disruptive or disrespectful behaviour toward audience orstaff members, taking photos without express permission, or using the mediapass to see shows without producing reviews and/or promotional stories. If youintend to publish anything that can be construed as hate-speech, we advise younot to attend the festival.Questions? If you have any questions or media requests, please contact Anna Camara,Festival Publicist at publicity@hamiltonfringe.ca / 905-869-0927Happy Fringing! Please NoteYou will find Festival Program Guide changes, omissions and errataon the final page of this document. Please check before publishing!

Fringe History and PhilosophyThe Hamilton Fringe Festival is an un-juried theatre festival founded in October2002. The first Hamilton Fringe took place in the summer of 2003.Since the first Fringe Festival was launched in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1947,Fringe Festivals have become one of the most popular and successful theatreevents in the world. In fact, at 70-years-old, the Edinburgh Fringe is the largestarts festival of any kind in the world. The allure and popularity of Fringe Festivals comes from their focus on new andemerging artists – risk-takers who present innovative theatre to wider audiences. This commitment to the “Fringe philosophy” allows virtually any size of companyto participate, representing an unequalled opportunity for performing artists fromall disciplines.Presenting live theatre in an informal, approachable and inexpensiveenvironment, the Fringe strives to break down traditional boundaries toparticipation – for audience and artists alike. Audiences are invited to experiencethe work of seasoned veterans alongside that of emerging artists. Local, nationaland international performing companies benefit from working together andlearning from each other in a vibrant and exciting festival atmosphere. In order tostimulate artistic innovation, participation in the Hamilton Fringe Festival isdecided by lottery and participating projects are not curated.Four Governing Principles of the Fringe1. The event must be non-juried, with all entrants chosen either on a first come, firstserved basis, by lottery, or by a similarly random and unbiased process;2. 100% of ticket revenues must be returned to the artists;3. There must be artistic freedom – no censorship is allowed; and4. There must be accessibility for all companies – i.e. application fees must be lowenough to allow all companies to participate
