THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY MACECenturies ago, monarchs wentto battle accompanied bysoldiers armed with swords andbishops armed with maces. Bothswords and maces served thesame purpose: they were brutalweapons designed to protect themonarch in battle. Over time, asthe protective role of bishopsdiminished, the mace becamea ceremonial scepter whichrepresented the monarch’sauthority. While the originalmaces were heavy clubs constructed to break armor, theceremonial maces were magnificent pieces assembled fromprecious metals and jewels that beautifully displayed themonarch’s coat of arms. Over time, the mace was adoptedby universities to represent the authority of the universityto confer academic degrees and honors. As such, a macerepresents the unique values and culture of a university.Constructed by Barton Ward of Montbleau & Associates,San Diego, the mace is comprised of wood, granite, andetched glass with accents of pewter and lapis. The macewas conceived as a scaffold to highlight the University’sseal, which portrays National University as a traditional yetinnovative institution.Other significant components include: The open framework, representing access to the learningenvironment which the University provides to all students The crown, representing the learner’s lifelong quest forknowledge The globe, representing the University’s diversity and itsstatus as a global institution of higher learning The inscription of the Latin motto, DISCENDO VIVIMUS —“We live through learning”When not in use, the mace is displayed at the University’sSpectrum Business Park campus. In celebration of National University’s 25th anniversary year(1996), Carol Hinton of the San Diego-based Hinton Groupwas commissioned to design a mace (for the University)which would serve the traditional function of representingacademic authority and capture the fresh, innovative spiritof a young university serving a unique population of nontraditional learners.ACADEMIC REGALIAThe pageantry of commencement exercises dates from theMiddle Ages and the traditions of Europe’s first universities. The monk’s skullcap became the mortarboard cap or tam.Black is accepted in the United States but many foreignuniversities have distinctive and colorful headdress. The gown is an adaptation of the medieval priest or friarrobe and is distinctive for each degree. The bachelor’s gownis yoked with a closed front and long pointed sleeves. Themaster’s gown can be worn open and has long sleeves slitabove the elbow to allow the forearm to protrude. Thedoctoral gown has velvet panels down the front and threevelvet bars on each of the full bell-shaped sleeves. The colorof the velvet may indicate the academic discipline: purple forlaw, dark blue for philosophy, light blue for education, whitefor humanities and arts, gold for science, and orange forengineering.Tassels vary in use and color. Doctoral tassels are usuallygold; master’s and bachelor’s are black at NationalUniversity, all bachelor’s and master’s candidates wear bluetassels. Honor graduates wear silver. Military graduates weara red, white, and blue cord. The hood evolved from a priest’s cowl and is worn bymaster’s and doctoral candidates. The lining color or colorsare those of the college or university granting the degree. AtNational University, the hood is light grey and blue.10
