University AwardAspire! Award for COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIPAddison Blackwell, Undergraduate StudentThe Aspire! Awards were established in 2011 as a way to recognize students who embody theAspirations for student Learning which are Curiosity, Self-understanding and Integrity, Civility,Courageous Leadership, and Ut Prosim. Addison Blackwell, a senior from the College of Agricultureand Life Sciences, majoring in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, was the recipient of the 2020Aspire! Award for Courageous Leadership. Check out her story below.“As a first-year student, Addison Blackwell watched as some of her peers struggled with alcohol andsubstance abuse—and, ultimately, their overall well-being. She knew then she wanted to help leadchange on campus.Addison joined the IMPACT Peer Education and Prevention Team through Hokie Wellness afterlearning about the team’s mission. IMPACT stands for Initiating and Motivating a Positive AlcoholCulture Together. Team members facilitate workshops, promote a Party Positive message, educatestudents about the negative side effects of high-risk drinking, and collect data.Her nominator wrote, “While Addison could turn a blind eye or try to minimize these issues as justpart of college, she instead chooses to step up to the challenge to enact positive change again andagain. In my understanding, this is what it means to be a courageous leader.”Addison is, in her nominator’s words, “nonjudgmental, caring, curious, and hilarious.” This is all partof what makes her an effective leader. She is also mindful that leaders must be continual learners.When she is not working with IMPACT, she volunteers with College Mentors for Kids and serves as ahouse manager for her sorority, Sigma Kappa.Her nominator wrote, “From the moment she steps in front of a room or meets with a student, sheis able to put them at ease. She is not there to shake her finger and shame them. She is there to shareher expertise and support to help them grow, learn, and make informed decisions. It is truly amazingto watch a student’s entire demeanor change because Addison makes them laugh and meets themwhere they are.”To walk across campus with Addison is to see her leadership style and get a glimpse of how she hasspent her four years.“It isn’t unusual for someone to walk up to her to thank her and share a changethey have made in their life,” her nominator shared. “By the time she graduates in May, she will havespent three of her four years in college educating thousands of Hokies and will have truly left anexample of what it means to be a peer educator, and, ultimately, a peer leader.”She continued, “It is forming a group that includes others instead of rejecting them, and beingconfident in yourself and your abilities to better the community around you—wherever you are.”Addison, well said. College AwardsRandolph L. Grayson Outstanding CALS Diversity Scholar Award WinnersThe Randolph L. Grayson Outstanding CALS Diversity Scholar Award was established in 2016 torecognize outstanding diversity accomplishments of students in the College of Agriculture andLife Sciences. The four individuals who are receiving this award exemplify excellence in advancingthe college’s mission of promoting diversity in the college. The student award is named for Dr.Randolph Grayson, who students continuously cite for the encouragement and support he hasgiven them over the years.Cristina Marcillo, Graduate StudentCristina Marcillo is a Ph.D. student in Biological Systems Engineering. She successfully defendedher thesis in March 2020. Cristina has displayed devotion to issues of justice and inclusion in herresearch, service, and professional activities. Her research investigated disparities in water systemmanagement in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She discovered that rural areas and areas withhigher minority populations were more likely to fail the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.With a partnership here at Virginia Tech, she has developed drinking water test kits that have beenused in a rural community in Guatemala near a silver mine. She was a member of Biological SystemsEngineering’s Diversity Committee and during her time there developed and co-led a seminar forcurrent graduate students designed to discuss issues in diversity and campus climate.Lester Schonberger, Graduate StudentLester Schonberger has a M.S. in Life Science and is a Ph.D. candidate in Food Science and Technology.Lester’s efforts across the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) to promote diversityand Inclusion are exemplary. Lester’s involvement in the FST Diversity Council led to a new vision andgoals for the department. Lester has improved and expanded the VT Engage Campus Kitchen Programby working closely with community partners and extended its support to outside of Virginia Tech. Hehas also facilitated listening sessions with the graduate students in the department and advocated tomake change so the department is more inclusive.Alexis Villacis-Aveiga, Graduate StudentAlexis Villacis-Aveiga is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.Alexis has brought a fresh perspective and vigor for inclusivity in the Department of Agricultural andApplied Economics (AAEC). He has launched a monthly departmental breakfast for graduate students,faculty, and staff to promote an inclusive community. He has advocated for more diversity in thedepartment and brought attention to the faculty of potential students from outside of the US whowould be interested in pursing a graduate degree in the dept. Alexis was actively involved in recruitinga Ph.D. student
