Chemung & Schuyler CountyCatholic CharitiesAnnual Report 2010Hope, Compassion, Care

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,2010 was a year of contrasts a year filled with hope, compassion and care - and a year with an increase inthe number of our neighbors reaching out for help and adecrease in funds to meet those needs. We have also learned that prevention is key as wework diligently with individuals and families toprevent homelessness, to maintain housing, and tohelp families avert crises. After providing years of services to vulnerablepopulations including youth in foster care, victimsof domestic violence and individuals struggling withmental health challenges, we broadened our services toinclude homeless prevention support to the poor and theworking poor.Thank you for partnering with Catholic Charitiesto overcome funding challenges and show ourneighbors compassion and care as they areempowered to move from crisis to hope.Through these broadened services, we have hadopportunities to meet one on one with neighbors incrisis; we have worked with families to find hope intimes of stress and create plans to overcome barriers andachieve financial stability. We have learned a tremendous amount about ourneighbors who struggle while living in poverty - theirneeds, their fears, their resiliency, their struggles, andhow the road to recovery sometimes needs a one-timefinancial gift, and other times needs additional casemanagement to achieve long-term stability.Bridget SteedExecutive Director

“Catholic Charities’counselors were soinspirational, theymotivated me to want moreout of my life.”

Amanda: the Gift of HopeEach of us has met someone in our lives who amazesus. Someone who makes us think, “Wow. thatgirl/guy is going places.” For me*, that momentcame when I first met Amanda. Despite the manyodds against her, Amanda has remained focused, driven, and positive. She attests that her strengthand ambition are tied to her experiences at CatholicCharities. However, I view Amanda’s potential moreas hidden than missing. At the age of 20, Amanda enrolled in a youthemployment program and was hired by CatholicCharities. In her position, Amanda helped teenscreate resumes, improve their computer skills andfind employment. At that point in her life, Amanda’smajor concern was supporting her two youngdaughters. Amanda had barely made it throughhigh school and had no plans to continue hereducation. However, Amanda found encouragementand support from the staff at Catholic Charities.“Catholic Charities became my home,” statesAmanda. “I learned a lot that I have taken along inmy journey.”Beyond the valuable job skills Amanda gained, she found something even more valuable herconfidence. “Before Catholic Charities I didn’t seemyself going to college, but Catholic Charities’counselors were so inspirational, they motivated me towant more out of my life.”As the first in her family to attend college, Amandahas completed a two year degree in General Studiesand the Certified Nursing Assistant Program at CorningCommunity College. She worked for 3 years as aCNA and is now working through Americorp withplans to continue her education. “I feel that throughthese experiences, being in the youth employmentprogram, learning how to set goals, time management, budgeting, it put me in the right direction so thatI could be a successful student. And now, I’vegraduated. I’ve decided to go take more classes andget a second degree and I think it’s all because ofCatholic Charities. I am grateful.”* Written by Lindsay Winters, Agency Director of Development

Youth Group: Sharing CompassionAfter hearing the song “Hands and Feet” by AudioAdrenaline, the Odessa/ Catharine United MethodistChurch Youth Group was inspired to focus theirefforts on being Christ’s Hands and Feet - To takecare of others and to work toward making theircommunity and the world a better place. With thisnew purposeful mission, additional young peoplewanted to get involved, and the youth group increasedin size and impact. They grew from 4 to 26 youth andbecame actively involved locally at Catholic Charities’Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry.Over the past several years, the group has given awaynearly 21,000 from their annual “fast” fundraisingevent during which they are sponsored to go withoutfood for 24 hours. Each year, the group donates to theHands and Feet orphanage in Haiti, supports a younggirl in Uganda through Compassion International, andprovides 1,000 to the Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry. After taking a tour of the pantry, the youth grouprealized Schuyler Outreach could purchase food fromthe Food Bank for .18 cents per pound and that their 1,000 donation could pay for 5,555 pounds of foodor 2.75 tons! In addition to their annual financialcontribution, the group has donated toiletries, cleanedfreezers, sorted produce, and volunteered for fooddrives and coat giveaways. So why do they do it? “It’s good to do things for otherpeople. We have fun doing it too.” And why do theychoose to partner with Schuyler Outreach? “They’reeffective and local directly helping many of ourclassmates and neighbors.”For more information about the Odessa/CatharineUnited Methodist Church youth group, which isopen to all youth in grades 7-12, regardless of faithbackground, contact Kevin & Betsy Austin at 607-5942893 or visit their website at www.odessayouthgroup.com.

Why partner withCatholic Charities?.“They’re effectiveand local.”

“Without GatewaysI would have had manymore trips to the BSUand many failed jobattempts.”

Jason: Effective CareWhen asked, “when did you come to CatholicCharities?”, Jason immediately responds “January 23,2008.” Even after several years, this date still remainsclear in Jason’s mind.In 2008, Jason’s life had reached a crossroads.Plagued with anxiety and depression for much ofhis adolescent and adult years, Jason was makingrepeated trips to the BSU with limited success. Thesecontinual relapses were wearing on Jason’s parentswho were at a loss as to how to help their son. Jason’sfinal trip to the BSU proved too much for his parentsand they would not let him return to their home.Despite mounting issues with Jason’s family, CatholicCharities’ staff were able to negotiate a temporaryagreement with Jason’s parents to provide himhousing until a vacancy at Catholic Charities becameavailable.Jason entered the Gateways program in Januaryof 2008 and over the last four years, through thesupport of Catholic Charities, has shown greatimprovements. He has lost over 50 lbs and hasbegun a much more active and healthy lifestyle.Jason has also moved into Catholic Charities’Supportive Housing Program and now lives in hisown apartment, saying “Now I have the freedom toenjoy things like a normal person.”In addition to his improved health and his ownapartment, Jason has maintained part-timeemployment for over a year. He has gained a greatdeal of confidence from his recent successes andnow for the first time in his life, he has plans for thefuture. Those plans include full time employmentand continued independent living. “WithoutGateways I would have had many more trips to theBSU and many failed job attempts.”

In deep appreciation of your support, Catholic Charities is pleased to acknowledge your giftswhich include cumulative donations beginning January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010.CHEMUNG COUNTY:Ancient Order of HiberniansAntique RevivalAuntie Anne'sChemung Canal Trust CompanyChemung County Probation DepartmentChurch Women UnitedCouncil of Churches of Chemung CountyDiehr's Driving SchoolEconomic Opportunity Program, Inc.Edger Enterprises, Inc.Elm Chevrolet Co.
