OverviewThe TOEIC Bridge TestDevelopment of the TOEIC Bridge TestThe TOEIC Bridge test is an English-language proficiencytest for people whose native language is not English. It wasdeveloped for those having beginning to lower-intermediatelevel proficiency in English. Test takers may be students ofEnglish or people who need to use English for work ortravel. The TOEIC Bridge test provides a reliable and validindication of learners’ English abilities.The TOEIC Bridge test was designed to motivate andinform test takers at the lower end of the English-languageproficiency range. The question types are similar to thosefound in the TOEIC test, but the TOEIC Bridge test is lessdemanding and the test is shorter. The contexts of thequestions are familiar to a wide range of test takers andinclude situations such as communication with familymembers and friends. This is in contrast to the TOEIC test,which focuses largely on workplace contexts.The TOEIC test is also a proficiency test for peoplewhose native language is not English, but it tests a widerrange of proficiency. The TOEIC Bridge test is differentfrom the TOEIC test. The question writers receive regular reviews oftheir work so that the quality of the test questions remainshigh. All test questions then undergo a series of rigorouscontent reviews by ETS assessment staff before beingconsidered for inclusion in a test form. Assembled forms arefurther reviewed to ensure that they satisfy both statistical andcontent specifications, and comply with ETS quality andfairness standards.Who takes the TOEIC Bridge test? students who are learning English and who are atbeginning to lower-intermediate levels of proficiency; learners of English who are taking commercial Englishlanguage courses; people who need to use some English for work, travel, orother purposes.Why take the TOEIC Bridge test?The TOEIC Bridge test is the choice of more than 180,000test takers a year and is recognized by hundreds ofcorporations. TOEIC Bridge TestContent and FormatTest ContentThese are some examples of the settings and situations foundin TOEIC Bridge test questions:Section I: Listening TestThis section consists of 50 questions and has an audiocomponent. The test section is divided into three parts. Testtakers listen to a variety of questions, talks, and conversationsrecorded in English, then answer questions based on thelistening segments. The Listening section takes approximately25 minutes. Activities: hobbies, sports, daily routines, free-timeactivities Dining out: lunches, restaurants, reservations Entertainment: cinema, theater, music, art, exhibitions,museums, sports, gamesPart I: Photographs Family and friends: family members, activities withfriends, invitations, petsPart III: Short Conversations and Talks General business: sales, conferences, training, bills,banking, appointments, advertising Health: doctors, dentists, clinics, hospitals, general healthand healthcare Housing: apartments, houses, farms, buying and renting,repairs Offices: letters, memos, telephones, fax and e-mailmessages, office equipment and furniture, officeprocedures, office small talk News: weather forecasts, news programs, newspapers School: classes, classrooms, subjects, teachers, students,books, homework Shopping: groceries, clothes, purchases Travel: directions, trains, airplanes, taxis, buses,ships, ferries, tickets, schedules, station and airportannouncements, car rentals, hotels, reservationsTest FormatThe TOEIC Bridge test is a one hour, paper-and-pencil,multiple-choice test that consists of 100 questions dividedinto two, separately timed sections.Test takers respond to each test question by marking theletter (A), (B), (C), or (D) on a separate answer sheet.Although the actual testing time is approximately one hour,additional time is needed to allow test takers to complete thebiographical questions on the answer sheet and to respond toa brief questionnaire about their educational and workhistory. Therefore, approximately 1 ½ hours should beallowed to take the test.TOEIC Bridge User GuidePart II: Question-ResponseSection II: Reading TestThis section consists of 50 questions presented in writtenformat in the test booklet. Test takers read a variety ofmaterials and respond to questions based on the itemcontent. The Reading section takes 35 minutes.Part IV: Incomplete SentencesPart V: Reading ComprehensionPreparing to Take the TOEIC Bridge TestThe TOEIC Bridge test is not based on the content of anyparticular English course, but rather on the test taker’sproficiency—the overall ability to use English. Improvementin proficiency may take some time and is generally achievedthrough a combination of practice and study. Before takingthe TOEIC Bridge test, the test taker should read theTOEIC Bridge Examinee Handbook to become familiarwith test directions and format, and to learn how to markanswers on the answer sheet. Sample questions included inthe handbook will help the test taker understand the testtasks. In addition, reading, watching TV and videos,listening to tapes, taking an English course, and speakingwith friends and colleagues are ways to practice English andimprove overall proficiency.TOEIC Bridge Test Content and Format5

Administration of the TOEIC Bridge TestWhere is the Test Offered?required to give the supervisor identification document(s)before leaving the room. It will not be possible to makeup the time lost. At the conclusion of the test, the testtaker will be required to return the test book and answersheet to the test supervisor.The TOEIC Bridge test is available throughout the world.Testing can be arranged through schools, corporations, orother organizations that ask students or employees to takethe TOEIC Bridge test.If testing is not available through a particularorganization, test takers may contact the local ETS PreferredVendor to find out when and where to take the test.How Often Can the TOEIC Bridge TestBe Taken?Dismissal from Test SessionA test administrator/supervisor is authorized to dismiss atest taker from a test session, or scores may be canceled, dueto violations such as, but not limited to, the following: attempting to take the test for someone else or havingsomeone else take the test on the test taker’s behalf failing to provide acceptable identification obtaining improper access to the test, a part of the test, orinformation about the test Test Securityusing a telephone or cell phone during the test session orduring breaks The TOEIC Bridge program and its local ETS PreferredVendors consider the maintenance of security at testingcenters to be of utmost importance. To offer score users themost valid and reliable measurements of English-languageproficiency available, the TOEIC Bridge programcontinuously reviews and refines procedures to increase thesecurity of the test before, during, and after administrations.using any aids in connection with the test, such asmechanical pencils, pens, pagers, beepers, calculators,watch calculators, books, pamphlets, notes, rulers,highlighter pens, stereos or radios with headphones, cellphones, watch alarms (including those with flashing lightsor alarm sounds), stopwatches, dictionaries, translators,and any handheld electronic or photographic devices creating a disturbance. Disruptive behavior in any formwill not be tolerated; the test administrator/supervisor hassole discretion in determining what constitutes disruptivebehavior. attempting to give or receive assistance, or otherwisecommunicate in any manner with another person aboutthe content of the test during the administration, duringbreaks, or before dismissal of the test session removing or attempting to remove test content, scratchpaper, or notes relating to the test content from the testcenter. Under no circumstances may test content orany part of the test content be removed, reproduced,and/or disclosed by any means (e.g., hard copy, verbally,electronically) to any person or entity. using scratch paper during the test session tampering with a computerTest takers must have the supervisor’s permission to leavethe testing room. Any lost time cannot be made up. taking a weapon or firearm into the test center taking food, drink, or tobacco into the testing roomThere is no scheduled break during the TOEIC Bridgetest. If a test taker must leave the testing room, s/he is leaving the test center vicinity during the test session orduring breaksTwenty-eight days should lapse before a test taker retakesthe TOEIC Bridge test. If a test taker takes the test morethan once in 28 days, the test will not be scored and arefund will not be offered. Test takers must pay again totake the test after 28 days have passed.Test Center ProceduresThe following procedures and regulations apply during theentire test session, which begins when test takers are admittedto the test center and ends when they leave the test center. No test taker will be admitted after test materials havebeen distributed. No books, dictionaries, papers, notes, rulers, calculators,watch alarms, mobile phones, listening devices, recordingor photographic equipment, highlighters, or aids of anykind are allowed in the testing room. No paper of any kind is permitted in the testing room.
