PUMICESYSTEM CHIMNEYS & LINERS.naturally betterDOC/CP3/64 SAP Issue 6 940002642 February 2017Part of the BRAAS MONIER BUILDING GROUP

Pumice - naturally betterPumice is a natural insulator. This is the unique property that separates pumice from all otherchimney materials. The insulating properties of Pumice allow the flue gases in the chimney to quickly reach their optimumtemperature enabling the heating appliance to reach its optimum performance shortly after lighting. It also keeps the chimney warmer longer as the heat output of the appliance decreases- once again aiding performance and reducing the likelihood of condensation and soot build-up.The natural properties of pumiceResistant to temperature changePumice has very little expansion and contraction withtemperature change. This reduces the possibility of crackingand structural damage that can occur with other products.High Insulation PropertiesPumice is a natural insulator, able to maintain the temperatureof flue gases when other products have allowed thetemperature to fall below the dew point.LightweightPumice is strong yet lightweight allowing one person to lift andbuild the chimney units.Pumice is a naturalmaterial sourced from theHekla Volcano in Iceland.Pumice is an excellent insulator, keeping flue gases warm while nottransmitting heat to the outside.Product DescriptionSchiedel Isokern products can be used for new chimneys and for the refurbishment of existingchimneys. The Isokern chimney systems provide a lightweight, easily installed and versatile chimneywhich can be used internally or externally. The systems are suitable for use with burning appliances innew and refurbished projects. They are ideal for Masonry,Timber Frame and Steel Frame construction.Isokern chimneys have been installed in Europe for over 60 years.2DM (DOUBLE MODULE)FLUE LINERSSchiedel Isokern DM block system is a highquality System Chimney. The double wallsystem maintains flue gas temperatureswhile preventing heat transference to theouter casing. The separation of the innerand outer components also allows forthermal movement, reducing the risk ofcracking and subsequent leaking or staining. It is simple and quick to build. The DM isavailable in 3 outer casing sizes - DM36,DM44 & DM54.The Schiedel Isokern flue liner rangeconsists of over 15 different sizes. Theycan be used for newbuild, extensions andrelining existing chimneys.FIRECHESTSISOKOAT FLUE SEALING SYSTEMThe Schiedel Isokern range of firechestsare supplied as flat packs. They can be easilyand quickly constructed to produce a neatand pre-formed fire opening ready forfinishing. The Magnum Firechest providesthe opportunity to create fire openings upto 1.2m wide. The Schiedel Isokoat system is an efficientand cost effective method of re-sealinga defective chimney shaft. The Isokoatmaterial is applied to the chimney underpressure and forced into the crackssealing them, re-pointing the joints andstrengthening the walls. For further detailssee the separate Isokoat leaflet.

DM Double Module Chimney SystemWhen the ease of construction and maximum insulation matter then the Double Module Systemcomes into its own. The system is designed to be quick and easy to install. The lightweight blocks are easy to handle. The outer and inner blocks are laid at the same time butwith staggered joints for safety and stability. The double layer of pumice blocks separated by an airgap maximises the chimney insulation. The Pumice Systems are suitable for wood burning, solid fuel, oil and gas (not condensing appliances). There are 3 systems covering a range of different internal diametersto meet the requirements of different appliances and uses:DM 36150mm internal diameter for smaller outputinserts, stoves and solid fuel/oil cookersDM 44180mm and 200mm internal diameters forinserts, stoves and open firesDM 54300mm and 345mm internal diameters forMagnum firechests and larger appliances, inserts and open firesUnique features of theIsokern DM Chimney SystemZero distance to combustibles on straight renderedchimneysQuick and easy to assembleLightweight materials, easy to handleHighly insulating pumice for better draw andminimum heat lossStaggered joints for maximum safety and stabilityAir gaps between outer casing and flue preventssurface stainingGood resistance to temperature variations givesthe maximum performance for your applianceApprovalsIsokern Pumice Double Module DM is CE Certified to EN1858 TÜV Cert no. 0036 CPR 90219 001Isokern Pumice Chimney Liner is CE certified to EN1857 TÜV Cert no. 0036 CPR 90219 002Isokern Magnum Firechest has been tested at the Fraunhofer Institut, Stuttgart, Cert no. Typical DM Installation DetailFOUNDATIONSConstruction begins by providing a suitable foundationand constructional hearth in accordance with BuildingRegulations and site requirements.OPEN FIRE OPTIONBed the base plate of the firechest onto a suitablefoundation/constructional hearth in accordance withBuilding Regulations and at the level required on site usingIsokern lip glue.Install the firechest using lip glue making sure all elementsare level. 100mm of brick/blockwork must be built aroundthe sides and back of the firechest to comply with BuildingRegulations. The inside of the firechest must be finishedwith a suitable fireback or firebrick slips.Install the gather using lip glue making sure all the elementsare level. The front face of the gather can be finished withplasterboard, rendered or clad in masonry. Lintels maybe required above the gather to help carry the brick orblockwork. The maximum loading capacity of the ISOKERNfirechest and gather is 2500kg.STOVE IN RECESS OPTIONPre-stressed lintels or a suitable cast-in-situ concrete slabmust be provided above the stove recess, please make surethey are strong enough to carry the load (see appropriateIsokern DM drawing for aperture size). It is recommendedto have a minimum of 600mm of stove flue pipe beforeconnecting to the support block. The support block is bedded onto the lintels using a weakmix mortar. A stainless steel adaptor is used to create apositive connection from the support block to the stoveflue pipe (fibre rope should be used to create a seal).LintelsSupportblockStainless steeladaptorGather elementsMagnum firechestFirebrick slipsSuitable foundationOPEN FIRE OPTIONTIMBER FRAME SOLUTIONFor timber framed solutionrefer to pages 21 - 22STOVE IN RECESS OPTIONFREE STANDING STOVE OPTIONA soot door casing and access flue block must be usedbelow the flue pipe entry. The DM 45 access kit is thenused for the connecting flue pipe. A suitable wall sleevemust be used to seal the cavity wall. Any combustibleinsulation within the wall must then be kept away fromthe single wall connecting flue pipe by at least 1.5 x itsdiameter. Fibre rope is used to seal between the flue pipeand wall sleeve, a suitable trim collar can be used to finishthe inner wall surface.Flue entry kitWall sleeve andfibre rope sealPrima flue pipeSoot door casingFREE STANDING STOVE OPTIONIGNIS-PROTECT 45 VERSION10

Typical DM Installation DetailCHIMNEY CONSTRUCTIONBed the first outer casing using lip glue making sure therebate (raised lip) is uppermost. The starter flue block isthen put inside the casing bedded with lip glue. The socketon the starter flue block must be uppermost and the airgap between the starter flue and the casing should be keptclear. The finished lip glue joints should be 2-3mm thick, aspecial bag is provided for ease of application and the lipglue should be applied in 12-15 mm beads.Lip glueOn a rendered stack with a top ring fitted (see p.12 forexample), where a straight chimney passes through a flooror roof, zero mm distance to combustibles can be applied.A sliding joint is made using mineral wool or similar noncombustible material. In all other cases, 38mm clearancemust be maintained between the outer face of thechimney and any structural timber or loose combustiblematerial. Floor boards, skirting boards, dado rails and othernon-structural components may, however, be in contactwith the chimney.Inner flue blocksLip glueVoid to bekept clearNon combustiblematerial38mm clearance fromstructural timberHOW TO USE LIP GLUEOffset blocks ‘if required’ must be used immediatelyabove the support block or firechest gather. (They cannotbe used higher up the chimney.) They must be gluedtogether with lip glue and be fully supported. Please notea chimney should be built straight wherever possible. Astarter flue block will be required above the offset blocksto stagger the joints between the outer casing and innerflue blocks.External chimneys must be tied to the structure atmaximum intervals of 1.5m and at the point where itdeparts from the roof using 2 x suitable stainless steel wallties. These are fitted into the outer casing joints. They arenot always required for internal chimneys. Please consultthe Isokern technical office.Stainless steel tiesStarter flue blockOffset blocks mustbe fully supportedand bedded withlip glueDM outer casingsLoad bearingsupportCasings and flue blocks are added using lip glue for alljoints. Ensure the air gap between the inner flue and outercasing remains clear. The outer surface of the casings to befinished with plasterboard on dabs or plaster. The side thatfaces the wall does not need an external finish.High tensile steel reinforcement rods will be required for allchimneys with a height that exceeds 1.4m above the roofline, 1.1m if the wind speed exceeds 44ms. These rods areavailable from Isokern and must be grouted (1:3 cement/sand) into the holes provided in the outer casings. You muststart the rods at least the same height below the roof aswhat’s above, please check with our technical department.Reinforcement rodsPlasterboardDM outer casing11

Typical DM Installation DetailRENDERED STACK OPTIONCode 4 lead flashing to be fitted at roof level as per BuildingRegulations. We recommend that you scorch a 5-10mmdeep channel into the outer surface of the casings and foldin the top edge of the flashing.Finish the outer surface of the casings above the roofwith 2 part waterproof render. The recommended mixis 1:2:5-6 cement:lime:sand for the undercoats. 1:2:8-9cement:lime:sand for the final coat. The number of coatsrequired will depend upon the degree of exposure, generally a two coat mix is acceptable. The mix may varydue to climate conditions, the thickness of any one coatshould not exceed 15mm, and each subsequent coatshould be reduced by approximately 3mm.Isokern concrete capping for render to be lip glued ontothe last casing.10mm gapfor ventilationunder Top RingCapping for renderWaterproof renderCode 4lead flashing(not supplied)RENDERED STACKBRICK STACK OPTIONTo take brick or stonework externally a corbel is fitted justbelow the roof. Use trusses and trimmers to brace thecladding as it passes through the roof.Code 4 lead tray with 50mm upstands and stepped flashingto be fitted in accordance with Building Regulations. A50mm upstand should be fitted tight to the outside of theflue block and where possible turned in by approx 10mm.Lead trays should be coated with bituminous paint whereit is in contact with mortar. The D.P.C. tray should be fittedat least 150mm above the lowest point of intersectionwith the roof. Weep holes should be provided at the frontof the stack above the tray for water drainage.Casings can be deleted above the corbel if stack height isless than 1.4m above the roof.12Flue block orchimney potLead trayand flashingWeep holesabove trayCorbel for brick stackBRICKWORK STACKTERMINATIONRaincap - Ventilated Option - (Installation with 0 distanceto combustibles for straight rendered chimneys only).Take the last flue block up through the capping, do not fillthe gap between the flue block and capping. Push fit thealuminium top ring onto the flue block and make sure thereis a 10mm air gap between the outer edge of the ring andthe capping. The flue block may need cutting to suit.Chimney Pot Option - This option always requires a 38mmdistance to combustibles from the outside of the block. Fita chimney pot at least 75mm down into the capping andflaunch with 1:3 cement and sharp sand to seal around. Thisoption is not possible if 0 distance to combustibles is required.AFTER COMPLETIONAfter installation is complete tests and checks should becarried out in accordance with document J of the BuildingRegulations. A chimney notice plate must be completedand permanently fixed in the dwelling, ideally near theelectrical consumer unit. The checklist and notice plate areavailable from Schiedel Isokern.USE AND MAINTENANCEThe chimney should be left for at least 72 hours beforeuse, then start only with small fires for the first week andgently increase thereafter. The chimney should be swept at least twice a year, oncebefore the heating season and once after the heatingseason. You may need to sweep during the heating seasondepending upon use. The brush should be a mediumdensity polypropylene bristle type and should be the samediameter as the flue. Steel brushes must not be used tosweep the Isokern pumice flues.Always follow the appliance manufacturer’s operatinginstructions. Always burn approved fuels or dry seasonedwood. Avoid burning unseasoned wood and slow burningof solid fuels as this can produce excessive soot andcondensation which in turn cause soot fires and damage. Ifcorrectly installed, operated and maintained these systemscould last the life of the dwelling.

Liner System - for new and existing chimneysThe pumice liner system comes in a range of 15 diameters from 150mm to 1000mm with T Liners,Liner Support Blocks, and Adaptors for ease of connection to the appliance. The insulated flue linerfor traditional buildSuitable for use with inserts, stoves, open fires andsolid fuel/oil cookers.Lightweight materials, easy to handleHighly insulating pumice for better draw andminimum heat loss600mm and 1000mm lengths mean fewerjoints and fast to install15 flue sizes availableGood resistance to temperature variations givesthe maximum performance for your applianceSand/cement flaunchingaround flue liner orchimney potLead tray and flashingStructural timber40mm from outsideof chimney or 200mmfrom inside of flue linerJoints sealed with lip glueStandard flue liners withsocket uppermostVoid filled with Lecainsulation mixSupport block and adaptorfor connection to flue pipeCast in situ slab tosupport chimneyGlass fronted inset fire7N blockworkSupport block forstove connection100 x 65mm lintelsSupport plateINSET FIREDownloadable drawings available from our web site140 x 140mm lintelsFREE STANDING STOVEwww.schiedel.co.uk13
