Brainpop The Respiratory SystemFunctions of Respiratory system The primary function of the respiratorysystem is to supply the blood with oxygenin order for the blood to deliver oxygen toall parts of the body. Oxygen is used inthe creation of energy through the processof respiration. The respiratory system is alsoresponsible for getting rid of carbondioxide and water. These are wasteproducts of respiration and are exhaled.1

Alveoli Gas ExchangeOxygen/Carbon Dioxide Gas Exchange: Alveoli are air sacs. Itis through these thin walled chambers that oxygen moves intothe blood and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into thealveoli. Each sac is surrounded by blood vessels/capillaries.The blood vessels carry oxygen to the cells where it is neededand deliver carbon dioxide and water to the lungs to beexhaled.13

Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Gas ExchangeThe circulatory system carries oxygen to the cells, along withglucose. These materials are used by the cells to create energy. The blood then returns to the lungs with carbon dioxide. Once inthe lungs, the carbon dioxide is transferred to the lungs to beexhaled and the blood "picks up" more oxygen to deliver to thecells. This is called the oxygen carbon dioxide gas exchange. This exchange of gases takes place between the alveoli and thecapillaries.Capillaries pick up O2 from the lungs and take it to the rest ofthe body. The blood returns from the body with CO2 to be exhaled.Respiratory Basketball GameOxygen Transport Video14

Most air contains: oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxideTidal Air Volume: the amount of breath lungs containduring normal breathing.Reserve Air Volume: the amount of breath that canbe forced out of lungs after normal breathing.Vital Air Volume: the maximum amount of air thatlungs can hold.Label the Lungs15
