She was born inManti, Utah and I was born near Chicago, Illinois. I'm retired butLori still works for the State Board of Regents in Salt Lake City.8

She's a secretary in the student loan division. We're lookingforward to the near future when she can retire.I was a paratrooper 101st Airborne in Viet Nam in 1968, got shotup and retired from the military. I moved from Illinois to Californiawhere I worked on a rescue unit, eventually managing thecompany. I moved to Utah in 1975 and hired on as a policeman inOrem City. I worked various divisions until a drunk driver hit me in1986 and ended my career. After I healed up from that I moved toWisconsin where I fulfilled my dream of building a house and barnthat I had designed. After two years there I sold out and moved tothe St. George area in Utah. I did various things there, from beingan outside lumber salesman to truck driving. I was on theDammeron Valley Fire Department and became the Fire Chiefbefore moving to Utah County in 2005. Here I met Lori and wemarried. I worked several different jobs until I finally retired forgood. We enjoy hiking, camping, bicycle riding, and riding the Harley (which I just sold to buy the Vette). Last summer we hopped on theHarley and, with a couple brothers of mine, rode to Yosemite andparts of Northern California. We like camping at Zion Park. We areboth physical fitness oriented and we have a home gymdownstairs.I hope this gives you a little idea of who we are and where we'vebeen so far.9

NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM—AN OVERVIEWBowling Green, KY—The National Corvette Museum opened in1994 as an educational tribute to America’s sports car. TheMuseum is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, known worldwideas the home of the Corvette. Every Corvette in the world since1981 is assembled at the General Motors Bowling GreenAssembly Plant located just ¼ mile from the National CorvetteMuseum. Both the Museum and Assembly Plant offer tours to thepublic. The exterior of the National Corvette Museum is noted for itsaward-winning architectural design. The sweeping lines of thebuilding were inspired by the car it honors. Departing totally fromthe traditional rectangular museum concept, the Corvetteshowcase is located on an attractively landscaped 60-acrecampus. The most prominent exterior feature is a large circularcar salon encased by a striking yellow conical roof. High abovesoars a red 12-story spire. Known as the “Skydome,” this sectionof the Museum has become a landmark for the Bowling Greenarea. The interior of the 115,000-square-foot building uses curved walls, geometric design and full scale diorama displays to tell the storyof the Corvette’s past, present and future. More than 80Corvettes from every era since 1953 are displayed, with eachdisplay changing periodically. While some are beautifullypreserved production models, many are one-of-a-kind conceptvehicles rarely if ever before seen by the public. The Museumalso features a tremendous collection of automotive memorabilia, informative films, educational exhibits, historical displays, a libraryand archives, conference center, car preparation and deliveryarea, Corvette Store and, of course, the Corvette Café, a 1950sera diner. There is something to appeal to visitors of every age, from Corvette and sports car enthusiasts to every man, woman11

and child who likes exciting cars and the nostalgia of days goneby.Upon entering the National Corvette Museum, visitors are greetedby a special car from the Museum’s collection displayed on aturntable in a glass-walled room. There is also a new Corvettethat visitors may “try on for size,” sitting in the driver’s seat for amemorable snapshot. The front lobby gives way to the Corvette Gateway. an area thatwill test your knowledge of America’s Sports Car with a series ofinteractive quizzes. Next, it’s on to the 200-seat ChevroletTheater to comfortably enjoy a brief introductory film on the bigscreen, which sets the stage for your Museum. This big-screenpresentation gets the visitor’s “engine revved” and ready to enjoyan exciting tour. The Chevrolet Theater also plays host toeducational speakers and other special programs from time totime. The first exhibits bring visitors to an area located in NostalgiaAlley where a series of realistic scenes mirror the Corvette’s earlyhistory. Stroll down Main Street and visit the mid-centurybarbershop and the old service station, complete with authenticgas pumps, air tower and garage. A live mechanic is often onduty to greet visitors. Vintage Corvettes line the street along withearly advertisements and other memorabilia from the car’s earlyyears.Corvette wouldn’t be what it is today without the manycontributions of Zora Arkus-Duntov, universally recognized as the“father of the Corvette”. You can view a historical display, shrineand the final resting place of he and wife Elfi within the nostalgiaarea.Next stop is the historic Route 66, often called “America’s MainStreet.” This tribute to the highway includes the lifelike figures ofGeorge Maharis and Martin Milner, stars of the Route 66television show that ran from 1960 until 1964. They stand next toa beautiful Corvette like the one driven on the show as well as avintage motorcycle. The final stop on Main Street is the Chevrolet DealershipShowroom featuring classic Corvettes that could pass for brandnew. See Sting Rays, Sharks and other classics as a lifelikesalesperson attempts to close a deal. Who doesn’t remember12

visiting the showroom and dreaming of owning one of thesebeauties! Another full-scale diorama recreates a portion of the oldCorvette assembly line in St Louis, where the Corvette wasproduced from late 1953 until 1981.Next, it’s time to talk horsepower as visitors explore Corvette’sracing history in the Performance Area. This circular room is 80feet in diameter with its outer wall covered by a giant panoramicmural of famous Corvette racecars. The inner wall is a timeline ofnotable achievements in engineering and performance. Severalwell-known racers from the late 1950’s to the ultra-highperformance racecars of today are arranged on a simulatedracetrack. Interact and experience the excitement of the racingpits and participate as a member of the Corvette team’s pit crewat our “Pit Crew Challenge” exhibit. Change tires, fuel up and takethe challenge as part of this exciting exhibit. The area of theMuseum also features cutaways of high horsepower engines andpowertrains giving visitors a close-up glimpse at the “heart of thebeast.” The inner circle of the Performance Area boasts twostate-of-the-art driving simulators. The simulators are designed topresent a limitless number of scenarios drivers face on the roadfrom within a realistic cockpit.Advance to the Design and Development area, whichdemonstrates how Corvettes are created at the General MotorsTechnical Center in Warren, MI. Aerodynamics, materials andtechnology themes are incorporated into this unique area of themuseum and cutaways of the 6th Generation Corvette are a mainfocus. See how Corvettes go from the drawing board to workingprototypes to actual production models. The scenes show thelifelike figures of actual designers and engineers surrounded byoutrageous sketches, prototypes and clay models. Both theyoung and the young at heart will dream of a career behind thescenes at Corvette after seeing this exhibit.Corvette wouldn’t be what it is today without its “enthusiasts” sothis special section illustrates and celebrates the Corvette lifestyle. The area includes memorabilia, videos and images from CorvetteClubs, Members and other organizations. There you can learnwhat makes Corvette so special, and there are more interactivetrivia games and even an interactive racing experience to try out.A major feature of the enthusiast’s area is a depiction of theforthcoming NCM Motorsports Park. The planned developmentwill be a 300 acre “world class” facility for high performance13

driving, educational and teen drivers safety programs. The facilityis scheduled to open within three years. The largest display area is the famous Skydome portion of theMuseum, 140 feet in diameter with a nearly 100-foot high glassceiling. Cars in this area, as in every part of the Museum, areconstantly being changed and rotated. The Skydome featuresproduction vehicles on-loan from private owners as well as carsmade famous by magazines and auto shows the world over. There are also several display cases showing valuable Corvettecollectibles. Each year a selection of individuals are honored fortheir contributions to Corvette, and the sky dome is a place ofrecognition for the prestigious Corvette Hall of Fame. Currentinductees are spotlighted within the spire, while information andvideo clips on every inductee is available via two touch-screenkiosks.The Exhibit Hall is the final display area in the Museum. This areahouses an ever-changing display of specially themed exhibitswhich rotate every few months. The space is home not only toCorvettes, but also other makes and models, and even exhibitsgeared towards families and children.Lifelike figures from the Corvette’s past and present are locatedthroughout the National Corvette Museum and animate the manyexhibits. An internationally renowned sculptor created the figuresusing the actual people depicted who agreed to be “cast in life.”These cast-in-life figures introduce visitors to the famed peoplewho designed, engineered or raced the car or otherwise helpedmake it famous.Accessible through the Exhibit Hall and Corvette Boulevard is theCorvette Store, a 4,600-square-foot retail store offering a widevariety of Corvette, Chevrolet and other automotive items.Shoppers find unique apparel, collectibles and gift items in afriendly atmosphere. The Corvette Store is not your averagemuseum gift shop! The Corvette Store gives way to Corvette Boulevard and our“Nursery.” Watch new Corvette purchases come to life in ourDelivery Area, while owners take delivery of their new Corvette atthe Museum. When an order for a new Corvette is placed, customers can opt to choose the R8C Option that designates theCorvette purchase as a “Museum Delivery.” Trained staff takesthe new Corvette buyer on a tour of the Museum and an on-hands14

introduction to their new Corvette. Several deliveries are doneeach day, departing down Corvette Boulevard and Victory Lane, and give visitors the opportunity to see first-hand what Corvetteexcitement is all about. The Library and Archives provides a vast array of knowledge forinquisitive researchers. A staff of Corvette professionals is-onhand to offer technical advice and answers to questions. Thearea houses the most comprehensive source of Corvette-relatedinformation for enthusiasts all over the world.A visit to the museum would not be complete without a meal orsnack in the Corvette Café. The Café is a 50’s-themed diner withmodern menu favorites. Open for breakfast Monday throughSaturday and lunch daily until 3:30pm, visitor can enjoy everythingfrom a burger and hand-spun shake, to wraps, soup, salad, sandwiches and many other favorites hot off the grill. Finally, guests have the opportunity to host their very own privateevent at the museum.
