A.Volume IXFriendshipOur AnchorZone 1 of the Kansas Council washostess to the 12th annual Kansas convention of Epsilon Sigma Alpha whichconvened at the Hotel Kansan, Topeka,Kansas, on April 15, 16, and 17. SueBrubaker, convention chairman, · andBeryle Elliott, co-chairman were incharge of the arrangements. 246 ESAmembers representing 53 chapters enjoyed all the meetings planned aroundthe theme of "Friendship-Our Anchor."Julia Moehlman and her committeebegan registration on the mezzaninefloor of the Kansan Hotel at 4:00 Fridayafternoon, April 15. At 8:00 the mixerparty planned by the Beta Eta Chapterof Holton and the Beta Theta Chapterof Horton began in the Indian-WalnutRoom. Clever games and hilarious entertainment provided a delightful evening as well as a chance to renew oldfriendships and make new friends.The last meeting of the 1954-55 executive board was held in connectionwith a breakfast Saturday morning at7:30. The Epsilon Kappa Chapter of/ Hiawatha decorated the table beautifullywith spring flowers , individual shelldecorated place cards and corsages ofjonquils. The las few details regardingthe assemblies of convention were discussed and each officer was presenteda gift by the president.The well planned and informativeworkshops began at 9:00 and were verycapably conducted by the fo1lowing girls:Helen Maryman, President; Car o ISteeples, Publicity; Mildred Baer, Rush;Helen Ames, Social; ESA Home Play,Topeka girls; Louise Lyda, Educational;Alma Mae Moorman, Ways and Means;and Freda Philip, Zones.At noon we entered "Ye Old Waterfront Inn" for luncheon served in theRoof Garden. Beta Chi Chapter of Topeka were responsible for the beautifultables that we admired during the meal.Katharine Harris, state president,opened the first general assembly withthe opening ritual at 1:15. Lorna McCarty, Hutchinson, led the group in . theflag salute and the singing of Americathe Beautiful. Our chaplain, Helen Sturgeon, Hutchinson, gave the invocation.We were welcomed to Topeka by SueBrubaker, convention chairman; EthelClark, city council president; · and MayorGeorge Schnellbacher. Virginia Dollard,Pratt, gave the response. State officers,state chairmen, convention committees,and the following IC officers were introduced: Alice Poppe!, Hamilton, Ohio,IC 2nd. vice-president and our officialIC representative; Beryle Elliott, assistant international director; JessieMcAdoo, IC 1st. vice-president; IreneSpangler Anderson, IC chaplain; andPauline Cowger, state director. MAY, 1955I. C. Convention/ Meets in WichitaBy now I hope all of you have madeyour plans to attend the InternationalConvention in Wichita June 17, 18 and19, 1955. Convention Headquarters isthe Broadview Hotel-and the themeis ESA THE KANSAS WAY.So you will know what to expect,let me give you a quick run-down ofour agenda. The first general assemblywill begin at 9:00a.m. FRIDAY MORNING. Please notice this is a little different than the way we do it duringour State Convention. This assemblywill be a very important one and mostof the business will be handled at thistime. The I.C. Officers, State Presidents,Workshop Chairmen, etc., will be honored at a luncheon Friday noon. Thisis by invitation only, so the others willbe free at this time. At 1:15 p .m. theState Presidents Workshop will be held.At 2:00 the Second General Assemblywill convene. This assembly will bedevoted to the Workshop Panel. Bringyour notebooks to this meeting, as youwill come away with many ideas. Ageneral discussion will be held on eachworkshop-and we hope many of you inKansas will join in this discussion. Wein Kansas do have lots of ideas to sharewith our sisters from other states. At7:00p.m. the I.C. Officers, HeadquartersRepresentatives, and Convention Chairmen will form a Receiving Line in theballroom- and this w ill be your chanceto meet personally all the girls you./ have heard and read so much about.This will be immediately before the'-. ./ Informal Mixer Party. The assemblyalso voted to exchange the duties of thefirst and second vice-presidents. IreneLassen, first vice-president, honored the8 chapters organized during the year:Epsilon Chi, Colby; Epsilon Omega,Emporia; Epsilon Psi, Larned; ZetaBeta, Neodesha; Gamma Rho, Olathe;Zeta Gamma, Great Bend; Zeta Delta.Good Ship Friendship at Topeka for thew.eek-end. Mr. Mose Whitson, assistantsuperintendent of Topeka schools, talked on "Friendship." Everyone enjoyedthe ·charming personality and outstanding voice of eight year old Gary Dawdywho generously sang several numbers.The pantomine kids-5 gracious littlegirls- entertained us with a group oftheir numbers. Dancing followed thebanquet:·Sunday morning we convened at 9:00in the Roof Garden for the second general assembly. Irene Lassen conductedthe jewel pin service for Helen Duggan,Charlene Vitt, Dorothy Willer, AlphaZeta Chapter, Lawrence; Evelyn Carolson, Doris Sherbenou, Gloria Bigsley,Delta Omega Chapter, Manhattan; Mary archer, Alpha Lambda Chapter, Hutchmson; and Jennie L. Spurgeon, OmicronChapter, Salina. She was assisted byLuc1lle ·Harr and 10 girls from Wichita.Pauline Cowger honored those who havehad continuous membership in ESA for10 and 15 years. She presented theservice awards to Leota Wililams, Topeka; Jeanne Steele, Norma Hope Arkansas City; Lora Lo g, Nellie Ru'ssellEllis·; Lila . Floyd, Hays ; Eleanor Baird:Coffeyville, and Zeta Alpha, Wamego.Elaine Endicott presented the lettersfrom zone 4 inviting us to Manhattanfor the 13th state convention on April13, 14, and 15, 1956. The invitation wasunanimously accepted by the assembly.Following adjournment of the generalassembly at 4:00 p.m. the nominatingcommittee met with Lora Long, parliamentarian, as chairman. Also at 4:00Fay Jordan, counselor, with the assistance of Pauline Cowger, Alice Poppe!,and Jessie McAdoo conducted the question and answer hour in the RoofLounge. The budget committee underlthe chairmanship of Dortha Baugh,treasurer, also met at 4:00. Mrs. CharlesHughes, Miss Jennie Owen, and MissHelen Deel, Topeka, judged the chapteryearbooks, chapter scrapboks, and zonescrapbooks at the close of the first general assembly.As we entered the Roof Garden forth.e. formal banquet at 6:00 we weregreeted by state and IC officers. BeryleElliott, Topeka was toastmistress for Irene Lassen, incoming president receivesthe banquet planned by the Beta ZetaCh,apter of Topeka. Judgingwas based on the applause followingeach song's performance. Holton BetaEta Chapter received theprize .Mrs.Virgil Barritt of the. Institute of Logocpedics talked briefly and gave a demonstration with Joe Wright, an 8 yearold lad with winning ways from a fieldcenter. She expressed gratitude for ourdonations which have enabled speechhandicapped children to have traininga t the Institute of Logopedics. The delegates voted to continue the Institute ofLogodepics as our state project for thecoming year.Chapters ranking first place in thecontest were given prizes.
