SAN CARLOS LADY BRAVES FINISH 2015-2016 YEAR WITH A WINNING SEASONSan Carlos Unified School District would like to congratulateour San Carlos Lady Braves for giving their fans one of thebest years in Lady Braves history. They finished the year witha 16-3 record.It was an exciting year, and it was a year to remember, itwas the year the Lady Braves made it to the final four in the2016 AIA Division V State Basketball Tournament.Many thanks to the San Carlos community and the SanCarlos Apache tribe for coming together to support the teamduring their run for the state title.Congratulations to Head Coach Crystal Pietila, assistantcoaches Kevin Hooke and Jamie Hooke for bringing the girlsto the final four in the tournament with great coaching andsupport of the team at this level of play.Lastly, thank you to all the parents and families of theplayers for your support, faith and commitment to attendevery game on this year’s schedule. SOUTHWEST FOOD EXCELLENCE SERVICEBRINGS HEALTH FAIR TO RICE ELEMENTARYSCHOOLSAN CARLOS UNIFIED SCHOOLDISTRICT AUCTION ANNOUNCEMENTMarch 28, 2016San Carlos Unified School District has begun usingwww.publicsurplus.com to sell it surplus equipmentand miscellaneous items. Auctions were held inNovember, December, 2015 and January 2016,HP Mini laptops have been the focus on the firstauctions held. One hundred sixty five laptops andone vehicle were sold. The next auction will beApril 17-30, 2016. Items to be sold are computers,monitors, keyboard, electronic equipment, exerciseequipment, textbooks, and 9 vehicles.Southwest Food Excellence Service (SFE) who provides ournutritious lunches for San Carlos Unified School District held a HealthFair in Rice Elementary gym on March 9th , 2016. Representativesfrom SFE had stations set up around the gym where students learnedabout nutrition, the health content of foods and how much sugar is ina bottle of Pepsi. Healthy snacks were provided by the cafeteria staffwho served up fruit, veggies and various cheeses for the students toeat.Familiy, Career andCommunity Leadersof America (FCCLA)students and Mrs. Leyvafrom the Secondaryschool mixed updelicious smoothiesmade with real fruit forthe students to try whilethey whipped up severalflavored smoothies andexplained what wentSFE Chefs serving healthy snacks to students.into each smoothie.Several areasfocused on exercisewhile one station hadstudents take turnsusing the hula hoopwhile others wererunning and jumping inplace, another stationhad the studentslearning how toexercise by using drumsticks to exercise theirStudents learn to exercise with hula hoops.bodies.Students were allowed to take any healthy snacks with them theyreceived from the stations. Many students were able to win prizesat a few stations if they guessed the right answer to the nutritionalquestions by the SFE employees.All in all, everyone who attended this event left with many healthytreats and learned more about what fats and sugars can do to thebody. SCSS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETYINDUCTION CEREMONYThe San Carlos Secondary School held their NationalHonor Society Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, March 29,2016 at the Apache Gold Convention Center. Thirty twostudents were inducted into the National Honor Societyby advisor Ryan Gomito and Co-Advisor Monica Ruby. Itwas a wonderful evening for parents and guests as theyenjoyed a meal sponsored by the San Carlos Apache Tribe’sEducation Department. It was an honor to witness the SanCarlos Secondary students who were recognized for theiroutstanding achievement in academics.The NHS Chapter officers who presided over the eventand are as follows: Opening Remarks,President – DiondreHooke, Scholarship,Vice-President- Rachel Kinlicheeny,Secretary-Lauren Pina, Treasurer-Kristian Pechuli, HistorianTori Brown and Character-Paliamentarian-Wilbur BenallyIII. Weare so excited by the number of students who are nowparticipating in turning in their reading logs and meeting thechallenge of daily reading. We explain to our students thatreading makes their brain smart so that when they grow upthey will have many choices for their life.Over the holiday we told students to read daily and THEYDID!!!!! We had a large number of students who turnedin Reading Logs for holiday reading and they earned aMcDonald’s Happy Meal coupon for their efforts.Our Pizza Hut coupon rewards are still being given eachmonth. If a student in Pre k- 2nd grade turns in a weekly logwith at least 70 minutes read, they earn a coupon. In grades3-6 the time read needs to be 105 minutes. In addition, wehad our Semester Reading Challenge Awards Ceremony onJan, 26th to celebrate those students at every grade levelwho turned in weekly logs at least 80% of the time in thefirst semester. We will be having another end of the yearcelebration for those students who turn in reading logs 80%of the weeks for the second semester.We have begun announcing the Reading Challengewinners each week on KYAY radio, Wednesdays from 3:004:00 pm. Students never know which Thursday will bea Surprise Spring Thursday so they need to turn intheir Reading Logs EVERY Thursday between nowand the end of the school year! We also have PizzaHut Coupons available for March for those studentsin grades PreK-2 who read at least 70 minutes in oneweek of March and in grades 3-6 for those studentswho read at least 105 minutes for the week.Every Wednesday we read the previous week’snames of those students who turned in a readinglog on KYAY 91.1 Apache Radio! RICE STUDENTS POUND THEIR WAY TOBETTER HEALTH!SCUSD HONORS BRAVES WITHMOTORCADE FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2016Rice Elementary students were introduced to a new wayto exercise termed “POUND ROCKOUT WORKOUT” by TinaFlores the Physical Education Coordinator for the San CarlosSchool District during the recent Health Fair held at RiceGymnasium.POUND IS THE WORLD’S FIRST CARDIO JAM SESSIONINSPIRED BY THE INFECTIOUS, ENERGIZING AND SWEATDRIPPING FUN OF PLAYING THE DRUMS.“Unlike other classes that require a certain level of fitnessor experience, anyone can pound drumsticks.” Tina said.“Messing up is not a big deal. Anyone can hold a stick andhit the floor.”“We even had teachers and staff up and pounding away!”The Carole M. White Physical Education Grant whichwas awarded to San Carlos School District provides forteacher training in new ways to get children moving. The PEteachers are all learning POUND and will use it to help thestudents reach their health and fitness goals.Numerous studies have proven the powerful brainboosting, stress-relieving effects of drumming. The sixty plus car motorcade proceeded to leavethe school at 1:00 pm to drive throughout the San Carloscommunity, beginning with the Peridot housing divisions,Gilson Wash sub divisions and the Seven Mile district.Fans stood byon the roadsideor in front of theirhomes wavingand cheering forthe Braves asthe motorcadedrove throughthe housing subdivisions. Signswere posted upMs. Katrina Talkalai SCUSD Governing boardin yards, on thePresident motorcaderoadside and onthe fences in downtown San Carlos. It was a great day to bea San Carlos Braves fan!The motorcade ended up at Rice Elementary School anda lunch was provided after2:00pm in front of the PrimaryCafeteria.
