It is not intended as a discussion ofevery issue that may arise in those contexts but is illustrative of certain information that might beconsidered in conjunction with installation, maintenance, repair and use of the subject transmissions.Owners and users of Meritor’s Platform “G” 9- and 10-speed transmissions are responsible forfamiliarizing themselves with the content of this maintenance manual and using the information (andfollowing the warnings) contained herein for any function or condition covered. Section 1IntroductionOverviewPreselect SwitchSection 1IntroductionThis manual provides top cover and auxiliarycase overhaul procedures for Meritor’sPlatform “G” 9- and 10-speed transmissions.For complete maintenance and diagnosticsprocedures for Meritor’s 9-, 10- and 13-speedtransmissions, including models with the ElectricOver Air range shift system, refer to the ServiceNotes page on the front inside cover of thismanual.StatusPreselect Switch FunctionMainTransmissionin GearPrevents range shifts.Transmissionin NeutralActivates the preselected range shiftsolenoid.PreselectHigh RangeActivates the high range solenoid anddeactivates the low range solenoid.PreselectLow RangeActivates the low range solenoid anddeactivates the high range solenoid.Electric Over Air (EOA) Range ShiftSystem Standard on Platform “G”The Electric Over Air (EOA) range shift system,which is standard on Meritor’s Platform “G”9- and 10-speed transmissions, routes pressurizedair past the filter regulator and into the rangepiston housing. Solenoids enable air to shift thetransmission into high or low range.EOA System Features Eliminates the slave valve, air lines, rangepiston housing fittings and a pneumatic switchin the shift knob. Enables the auxiliary transmission to shift onlywhen the main transmission is in Neutral, whichprotects the synchronizer. Uses a preselect switch and is available withMeritor s Shift-n-CruiseTM speed control feature.EOA ComponentsComponentFunctionShift KnobTransmission in Neutral:Activates the preselected range shiftsolenoid. Requires 12 VDC switched power.Preselect high range:Activates the high range solenoid anddeactivates the low range solenoid.Preselect low range:Activates the low range solenoid anddeactivates the high range solenoid.High and LowRange ShiftSolenoidsPerform as electronic valves that enable airto pass through only when activated by theshift knob. Section 2Operating GuidelinesEngine Torque Curves Define Correct RPM or MPHSpeedsSection 2 GuidelinesOperatingWARNINGUse the information in this section to correctlyoperate the vehicle and prevent serious personalinjury and damage to components.How to Use the ClutchUse the Clutch for Initial Gear Engagement Whenthe Vehicle is StationaryUse the clutch brake for initial gear engagementwhen the vehicle is stationary. If you use theclutch brake when the vehicle is moving, theclutch tabs can break and damage the input shaft,transmission, and low and reverse sliding collar.Shifting at the correct rpm enables thetransmission to operate economically. Enginetorque curves vary by vehicle, because rpm andmph values are determined by enginespecifications, the rear axle ratio and tire size.If you changed the engine, rear axle or tires fromthe vehicle‘s original equipment, you must obtaina new Torque Split Chart to ensure that thetransmission operates correctly.Refer to the vehicle manufacturer‘s engine torquecurves to determine a vehicle‘s correct rpm ormph. A typical chart is shown below.Figure 1.1Do Not Coast in Neutral with the ClutchDisengagedIf you coast in neutral with the clutch disengaged,lubricants will be unable to pass to the thrustwashers. The clutchenables the gear teeth to mesh correctly.What Happens When You Do Not Use the ClutchEXAMPLE ONLY7505002500 The gear teeth grind instead of mesh and candamage the shift forks, sliding collars andgears.051015202530354045VEHICLE SPEED IN MPH505560654002583a Metal particles from the damaged parts can fallinto the lubricant and damage the bearings.Shift the Range Selector When the Transmissionis in Gear (Preselect) The transmission becomes difficult to shift orslips out of gear.Do not move the shift lever to Neutral and thenmove the range selector. This causes the gearchange to occur BEFORE the range changes andcan damage the synchronizer.Operating a Vehicle on a Hill or Grade Downshift to the next lower gear whendescending a hill or grade.Drain Moisture From the Air Reservoir Every Day Upshift to the next higher gear when ascendinga hill or grade.Draining moisture from the air reservoir every dayhelps prevent moisture and contaminants fromentering the system, which can affect operationand damage components.Use the Correct Gear to Prevent Shock LoadUsing the correct gear can prevent shock load.Shock load can damage gear teeth immediately orcause damage that appears later.Page 2Remove Axle Shafts When You Tow a Vehiclewith the Rear Wheels on the GroundIf you do not remove the axle shafts when you towa vehicle with the rear wheels on the ground, thetowing angle will prevent lubricants from reachingthe transmission mainshaft thrust washers and theaxle pinion bearings. Section 2Operating GuidelinesShift-n-CruiseTM Speed Control FeatureOptional Transmission Temperature IndicatorLight or Temperature GaugeWARNINGCAUTIONDo not operate the transmission when thetemperature indicator light comes ON, or whentemperature indicator gauge is in the “WARNING”area. These are indications that the transmissionis overheating. Stop the vehicle and service thetransmission as necessary to prevent damage tocomponents.Some vehicles use an optional transmissiontemperature light or gauge that enables you toverify that the transmission is within normaltemperatures during operation. Refer to thevehicle’s operating instructions for moreinformation.CAUTIONThe temperature indicator light will come ON, orthe gauge indicator will be in the “WARNING”area, when the transmission is overheating. If the transmission is overheating: Stop thevehicle. Service the transmission as required.Parking a VehicleWARNINGYou must place the transmission into Neutral andfollow the vehicle manufacturer’s procedureswhen you park a vehicle. If the transmission is ingear when you start the vehicle, the vehicle canmove forward suddenly. Serious personal injuryand damage to components can result.1.Only use the Shift-n-Cruise speed control featurewhen you operate a vehicle under normaloperating conditions. Do not use this feature inheavy traffic or on winding, wet or slippery roads.These conditions can affect cruise controlperformance, which can result in loss of vehiclecontrol, serious personal injury and damage tocomponents.Place the transmission into Neutral.2. Apply the parking brake. Refer to the vehiclemanufacturer’s instructions for the correctprocedures.Only use your finger to press the Shift-n-CruiseTMspeed control PAUSE, RESUME or SET buttonslocated on the shift knob. If you use a screwdriver,ballpoint pen or any sharp item, a button can stickin the switch assembly and affect speed controloperation. Damage to components can result.The Shift-n-CruiseTM speed control featureintegrates cruise control functions into thetransmission shift knob, so that you can reactivatethe cruise feature after a shift without removingyour hand from the shift knob.The PAUSE, RESUME and SET buttons are locatedon the TOP of the shift knob. The ON/OFF controlsare located on the instrument panel.How to Use the Shift-n-Cruise Speed ControlFeature Use the SET button to select cruise controlspeed. Use the PAUSE button to temporarily deactivatecruise control operation.
