VOLUME THIRTEEN NUMBER THREE FALL 2009The UCLA Medal: Top Honors for Alumna Rachel RobinsonWhen Rachel Robinson ’42 acceptedthe UCLA Medal from Chancellor GeneBlock at UCLA Day this past May, shesealed her own brilliant legacy alongsidethat of her late husband, pioneeringBruin athlete and professional baseballplayer Jackie Robinson. The award is theuniversity’s highest honor and a tributeto Rachel’s lifetime of dedication toeducation and social activism, especiallyher work since 1973, when — just a yearafter her husband’s untimely death atage 53 — she founded the Jackie RobinsonFoundation (JRF).In a UCLA Day interview, Rachel, now86, recalls being determined to “pullmyself out of that deep hole” to pushJackie’s legacy forward. “It had to bemore than just naming a building or astreet for him. It had to be somethingactive and alive — something in the areaof education.”The name of Jackie Robinson, whofamously broke the color barrier in MajorLeague Baseball in 1947 as a playerwith the Brooklyn Dodgers, had alreadybecome a symbol of the nonviolent civilrights movement. To honor his valuesand cement his legacy, Rachel set a boldmission for JRF: to provide comprehensivescholarships and support services tominority students in higher education.“We don’t just give them money,” Rachelexplains. Networking, mentoring, community service projects and leadershipdevelopment are all built into theprogram. At UCLA, JRF has awardeddozens of scholarships in the College ofLetters and Science and the professionalschools, as well as postgraduate fellowshipsin the David Geffen School of Medicine.“Among our many accomplished alumni,”Chancellor Gene Block said uponpresenting the UCLA Medal, “perhapsnone is more committed to empoweringothers to live better lives than RachelRobinson. We are especially gratefulfor her tireless dedication to providescholarships and leadership training, which has enabled so many deservingstudents to pursue their dreams.”Rachel was clearly moved by “such astunning tribute. President’s MessageKathleen FlanaganMy membership in Women & Philanthropygrew from a personal goal to help studentsattend UCLA and get the most out oftheir time on campus. By supportingyoung scholars, I hoped to create for themthe same opportunities that a high-qualityeducation provided for me.On a far greater scale, UCLA is anengine of opportunity for the people ofCalifornia, especially for students fromlow-income families and underrepresentedgroups. Access to UCLA often meansa fast track to positive socio-economicmobility, creating a cascade of benefits forour students, our state and our world. To help sustain broad access to UCLA,the university has undertaken the BruinScholars Initiative (BSI) to double theendowment for scholarship and fellowshipsupport. You can read about one inspiringBSI gift made by Women & Philanthropymember Rica Orszag in this newsletter. At the same time, UCLA leadershiprecognizes the need to expand partnershipsin the community to prepare studentsfrom all backgrounds to qualify foradmission. With the Los AngelesUnified School District, for example, the university established the innovativeUCLA Community School, a K-12program that opened this fall in the PicoUnion neighborhood. To advance UCLA’s core values of equalaccess, broad diversity and excellence—particularly in the face of state budgetcuts and student fee increases—Women& Philanthropy plays a pivotal role. Ourmembers open doors for aspiring students. We enable innovative programs. And weextend faculty scholarship and research.Wherever your philanthropic interestsat UCLA lie, I invite you to join us insupport of the university — an engine ofopportunity for the benefit of all.Women & Philanthropy at UCLA recognizes and promotes women’s leadershipand philanthropy on the UCLA campus.BOARD MEMBERSLena AstinSue BaumgartenPeggy BloomfieldPatty BoyleLya Cordova-LattaKaren DabbySandy DavisFereshteh DibaNaomi EllisonKathleen FlanaganAudree FowlerTricia GreyCoretta HarrisLois HaytinAgi HirshbergMarcia HowardBetty HuangMel JohnsonElaine Krown KleinBetsy KnappJoanne KnopoffValorie Kondos-FieldCarolbeth KornMrs. Harry LenartBea MandelJanet MarottJane McCarthyMerle MeaserJoy MonkarshMarianne MurphyPatt OppenheimPhyllis ParvinRue PineAstrid PrestonRita PynoosSusan RiceKarin RodgersMaxine RosenfeldRita RothmanMonica SalinasDorothy SalkinShirley ShapiroToby WaldorfRuth WatanabeSheila WeismanGloria WernerMarion WilsonCIRCLE MEMBERSDana BaldwinKristin BarensBarbara BergmanSara BinderCarol BlockDoris ChasinJan CloydeCarol CollinsRoberta ConroyDodie DanchickLynn DanielsonBetty DenitzLisa FeintechLeslie FleschJacqueline FogelRenee FraserMarjorie FriedmanRose GilbertHarriett GoldAnn GoldbergBarbara GoldenbergVicky GoodmanJulia GouwRosalyn HeymanRoslyn Holt SwartzJanis HornAda HorwichFreya IvenerLinda JangerLouise JonesLucia KaganGlorya KaufmanSally KaySuzanne KayneCharlene KornblumLinda KornfeldJacqueline KubickaElaine Lasnik-BroidaLauren LeichtmanJudith LevinLena LongoJane LopattEileen LudwickVal MaisnerMadonna MathesonElizabeth Mc LaughlinNancy McGinnisMarilyn McIntyreJeannette MooreSherie MorrisonLenore NeidorfJudith NelsonCarol NewtonTracy Nojiri-IsenbergHarlyne NorrisRica OrszagMarolyn PetersonRuth Ann PoppaPatricia RosenburgNancy SandersKathryn SandersPlatnickJacqueline SchwartzLane ShermanMarilyn Silva-LundVictoria SimmsShelley SingerRae Lee SiporinAmy SmithAnne-Marie SpataruKaren SrabergSharalyn StaglinJulie Strasser DixonMarilee UnruhDorothy VinskiPatricia WaldronTamar WilsonDee WinokurAdele YellinProduced byWomen & Philanthropyat UCLA External AffairsExecutive DirectorNancy SacksDirectorJasmine PayneAssociate DirectorSandy LevinSenior WriterAaron ZarrowArt DirectorElise Cozzi2208715 WP News r1.indd 411/13/09 3:30 PM
